Went to a local Maytag store today. 2nd generation runs it now, husband does the service and wife runs the showroom, answers the phone and so on. They've been around for 40-odd years in the same location...

...and it shows, unfortunately. While the entry lobby has a nice old Maytag wringer machine on display (a nice touch), once you step inside the showroom, the first thing you see is a bigger than life, faded Lonely Maytag Repairman poster (the WKRP guy, not the orignal guy).

Nice lady, but didn't have much product knowledge. Told me things that I knew weren't correct, but I don't think she was intentionally being misleading, she just didn't know that much about the products they were trying to sell. While I'm sure she does lots of things besides cover the sales floor, she really needs to have better product knowledge if they want to stay in business, IMO.

I like to support local businesses, and always go to the local ACE hardware before I go to Lowe's or HD, for instance. But these people really need to up their game.

Time has stood still for some appliance shop owners. I feel your pain.

Wow, those old console TVs bring back memories...

Grandpa was a horseman/geologist and worked for Alcoa scouting for Bauxite and later worked for Kerr-McGee scouting for Uranium ore, but when he was home, he really liked to watch Lawrence Welk on their B&W RCA TV. Who was the guy on that show with the accordion???

That would be Myron Floren. In the day when I sold these tv's, I remember a fellow
who bought the biggest Zenith color model just so he could watch the Lawrence
Welik show!

My parents loved to watch the Lawrence Welk show, on their 25" Zenith.

I miss these old tv departments, even if the new technology is better today....miss the old AC hum (don't know how the salespeople could stand it) that was really annoying in a now, nostalgic way. LOL!

And the smell of ozone in the air around the color TV's. That photo looks like it must have been between late 1963 and early 1965.

Older TV's not just the ozone--but also the heated dust smell from the hot tubes!and the tubes warmed the wooden cabinet-making a "woodsy" smell, too.
