Ya!! If it's a lower model(not a smooth-top) range that you're not interested in Phil, and in excellent shape, then I am!! especially if it's an Electri-Clean!!!... could you fit it in with your fridge, if you get it??? I'll be in VT next week for the last time this year, Sunday 14 to Sunday 21. Let me know what you find out!!

My Uncle and his Partner bought a Corning Smooth-top 30" stove in the late 70's and to this day, it still works. It is a GM Frigidaire electric oven with a Corning ceramic-top stove that they bought the first year Corning offered two versions: one that, like the first Corning cooktops, only worked with perfectly flat bottomed Corningware, specially made for cooking. Their new version worked with ordinary cookware with flat bottoms (yes, I see all the jokes). I was surprised at the time that Dick chose this stove, because he was an extraordinary cook; he told me that he didn't want gas tanks anywhere near the house and, like James Beard, made electric stoves do extraordinary things. And he did. For many years their friends would show up at the house with a brand new pot or pan specially designed for Corning stoves, so they had all the compatible cookware they'd ever need. The stove was a masterpiece in many ways. It was a beautifully simple design with none of the flourishes of badly designed appliances. It even had knobs that were more like high-tech stereo knobs on the control panel for the burners and the thermostats. The oven was huge and fast. The burners could cause a lot of stains and mess, but the overall effect of the stove was so clean and perfect, you hardly noticed. Ironically, the burners they used the most were an ancient 2-burner L&H cooktop with thick coils that they salvaged from the original kitchen and installed right next to the Corning Stove. So as fast as those smooth burners were, they weren't fast enough for morning coffee and the occasional soft-boiled egg. |
