Hello everybody ... for those who have been following the restoration process of my 1935 Maytag Model 30 wringer washer, I finally got the tub painted today. So, essentially, the restoration is complete, except for the decals, which are in the mail. I also want to completely disassemble the motor for a complete cleaning and refurbishment, even though its running just fine - actually, it purrs like a kitten, albeit a 77 year-old kitten!

Note - the hose has been taken off in the "after" shot, as the paint is not yet completely cured. The next round of photos will include the decals on the top of the lid and the front of the tub.

Additional photos are always posted on my Flickr album ...

Effing amazeballs!

Dude, you are the king. That is amazing. I love the colour. Is that an originally offered colour, the original to the machine, or just something you really liked and wanted it to be?

Geeze !!!

What a beauty she is. It really makes a difference with the tub painted. You and Larry can be very proud of the work you have done on these wonderful Maytag's. I'm just sorry I could not find a bushing for you. Hopefully you will find one from your contacts.

Anyhow I am green with envy over your green treasure !!

You could work at the Smithsonian. The OFF ON is so perfect and imposing, and the green on the tranny case is better than the original factory work.

Hey guys...thanks for all your positive comments! Yes, it has been a labor of love, and I think I will send a before/after shot to Dick at Hardware Hank's. He'll probably fall over in shock!

To answer your question about the paint color, Bob - it's Valspar's "Leaf Rising" color. When I saw it at Lowe's, I had a feeling it would be really close to the original, and when I did a paint spot test on an area that hadn't been oxidized from sitting in the sun, it almost matched perfectly. I know some other model 30 "Gray Ghosts" were more gray-green, but I guess Maytag had different shades.

Still awaiting the decals on order from the guy in Ohio. When those arrive, I'll take a couple more shots and post a video on YouTube.

GREAT JOB BRAD!

It really looks GREAT! Isn't it nice, once you're finished to just stand back and get a warm and fuzzy from all your handy work?

I've been following you progress on your YouTube videos. I think the last I saw was volume 9. At that point you were done except for the tub painting. So am I safe to assume there's a volume 10? Or will be soon?

After all this, I suspect the motor will be a piece of cake. How's the cord? It's easy enough to upgrade to a three prong grounded one. Safer too when playing in water! It'll really look cool with the decals!

Again, GOOD JOB!

Larry

Awesome!

While I'm crazy about Maytag wringer washers, that particular model was never appealing to me, until seeing the transformation that you've accomplished! That machine looks great! Now I want one too!

Jim, it seems like perhaps I've now got you interested in a Model 30! Admittedly, they do look MUCH better with a proper paint job. I'm guessing that the quality of paint back in the '30s wasn't all that good, because most of those machines one comes across are badly faded. But then, too, that could be due to the fact that a lot of farm folk left them out on the porch in the elements.

I read on your profile of your A806 restoration at the young age of 11! That's amazing!

The "Money Shot" - as per Todd's request

bradross's profile picture
On the previous thread, I posted a before-and-after shot of the tub. It had standing water in the tub, outside in the elements of Iowa, for who knows how long. The tub and the agitator were badly corroded and pitted, and the tub had a large crack 1/3 of the way around the sediment trap. I repaired it with JB Weld's SteelStik. Did an effective job of sealing the crack, but that compound cannot be polished, so the tub will never be in pristine shape. But at least it doesn't leak and I can actually use the machine.

I wonder what was so caustic in the water that would have caused pitting of the aluminum so badly.

I've posted the 11th video on YouTube.

Another photo of potential interest...

bradross's profile picture
With the "aesthetic" component essentially complete on the restoration, I'm now focusing my attention on the little details - such as the adjustable legs and castors. I noticed this interesting thing stamped into the metal of the castor - the patent date! (the "P" isn't visible, but you can clearly see ..AT'D APR.15,1930 )

Post# 642549 , Reply# 37   11/29/2012 at 08:44 (4,137 days old) by wringer (x)
Brad,

This is indeed interesting. Do all castors have the date on them and are any of them locking? I was able to get NOS castors for my gals luckily at the Amish. They have no date on them but the ones on the E and J look very similar to yours. I was very lucky to have gotten them. They had just 8 left and that is what I needed. I hope you enjoy your time spent with her a lot. She is a beauty !!!!

How Cool, Brad ~

mickeyd's profile picture

and that explains why, of all the wringers I've wheeled around, NONE wheels as easily as a Maytag. They patented it. A surprise but not a surprise. Often actually stopped and wondered: How the hell can this be so easy, stooping down and peering into the wheel machinery to find the magic. Wonderful discovery, Brad!

Patent date on castors...

bradross's profile picture
Hi Jim ... yes, all four castors have the same date impressed on them. One of them is a locking castor - unlike the later ones for the E, N, and J models that have a sort of toggle mechanism, the old ones simply have a thumb-screw that tightens a metal plate onto the wheel.

Post# 642920 , Reply# 42   11/30/2012 at 14:56 (4,136 days old) by wringer (x)
I have

never seen these before. Thanks for posting the pics. I am happy to see the rubber is still in good shape and still turn. I prefer my lever lock rather than the thumb screw but in general like the older castors better. You have a beauty in your whole machine Brad. Congrats and enjoy !!

Your machine has an identical twin sister . . .

mikel64's profile picture
Hi Brad ... I am brand new to the site and it was your pictures of your Maytag that caught my eye and led me here. I have to agree with everyone above . . Outstanding restoration work! All that said, I wanted to let you know that I have the identical twin of your machine . . . albeit not in the same condition. I no longer have the workspace to carry on tinkering with these bigger projects. In short, if you're interested in the project . . . she's yours. No sale, no trade, no conditions, just a new home.

Mike
