I got My aged Mother a Bosch dishwasher and just a few days ago its stopped cleaning the upper rack.
I tried yesterday to add more water see if that helped but no it refuses to wash the top stuff I cannot see any blockages but that does not mean there is not one somewhere so if anyone knows any easy way to find out could you let me know please?

Run some finish dishwasher cleaner through it, on the hottest wash.
Ensure your mother isn't using short wash/vario speed all the time.
Also check the paddles - they may be blocked - they are very easy to remove, and this is shown in the instruction manual. My Neff ones simply pull off the bottom, and there is a screw fitting one in the top.
Also when using Eco (if it has this cycle) the machine only intakes a very small amount of water, therefore the top basket isn't always sprayed.
The Bosch dishwashers get away with using very little water, because they alternate between top basket spray and bottom basket spray.

Alternating spray

ozzie908's profile picture
I was not aware it did this but that may be why its not washing the top rack it could be stuck on lower I will take it apart when I get down there next.

Thank you for all responses

All Bosch dishwashers alternate the spray. It could something as easy as a clogged spray hole in the upper spray arm that keeps it from spinning. Or something stuck in the path to upper arm (happened to my grandma, who didn't insert the filter properly). Worst case would of course be, if the spray charger thing is stuck on lower rack wash. Which model is it? The new models have a safety switch that can be overridden with a magnet - I was almost shocked at how easy one can make these new models wash with an open door.

something every day !

The last dishwashers I remember doing alternating sprays were AEG I never realised that Bosch did them too.

Cannot recall the model number will make a note when there again have done all the checking of spray arms etc no blockage at all so its a question of taking it to bits I will let her know its fixable as she may be looking for a new one.

Thank you for sharing this with me :)

My Bosch dishwasher does not alternate the spray. It always sprays from all 3 levels. It is model SHU43C06UC. I got it in 2005.

My 2003/2004 Bosch dishwasher does alternate spray levels. It supplies both baskets initially, then switches between the two baskets. The topmost shower spray is supplied via the same feed as the upper basket.

Bosch dishwashers with alternating spray arms have a small motor-actuated valve disk with pre-formed holes. Depending on where the holes align, water is or isn't supplied to the spray arm(s).

My 2011 Bosch does the alternate sprays on standard cycles, but I always use the `Express Wash' button usually along with `Eco' and sometimes the `Auto' cycle. This increases the water level and just sprays everything all at once (old skl). Cycle takes about an hour versus about 2hrs 30 normally - it costs more to run but hey :-)

Our 2006 Bosch sprays either the lower or the upper basket (including the ceiling shower). On varioSpeed, all jets runs at once. My new one with the activeWater system sprays either from the lower, middle or upper jets. On varioSpeed, it'll spray from the bottom and the ceiling or just from the middle arm. All three jets never work at once.

Not all Bosch dishwashers have alternating spray. It's become more common in recent years.

How are the cleaning reults?

I can imagine that they're worse than conventional spray technique...

We are currently dominating the top 5 or 6 spots. Some brands alternate only, we can alternate or do both depending on what the soil sensor picks up.

Cleaning results

I have a 2006 Miele Dw that alternates the spray. I think  It sprays the bottom and top racks at the same time and then it sprays the middle rack alone.  I think the middle spray arm also sprays out and down over the bottom rack.  It seems to give the same amount of time to all racks but on some cycles like cheese and starch this pattern changes and more time is given to the bottom rack.

Cleaning results in all racks is perfect.

I have an SHU43C05 Bosch DW. I don't think it alternates between lower and upper. But I have noticed that it's necessary to push the upper rack all the way back so the nozzle on the back of the top rack fits into the spray tube that comes up from the lower level. Usually it's no problem but sometimes a long item (like a mixing spoon) that is laid down on the upper rack will slip rearward and block engagement of the spray tubes. Perhaps that is the situation with yours?

Seems its ok

ozzie908's profile picture
At this present time for what ever was the issue it seems to have cleared itself. It will warrant further investigation when I have time as it was a flawless cleaner before it went doolally. When it goes next time I will take it apart and find out what its problem is and will duly report all findings.:)
Thank you for all your helpful comments I knew it would be a great place to ask !

Its gone back to not washing the top rack all over christmas we have had to use the bottom rack only and run the cycle more often.

I have won a Miele dishwasher and will collect it as soon as I can will then replace the Bosch and when I get it home I will take it apart... :)

Darn machine ....

ozzie908's profile picture
So after using the thing over and over with just the bottom rack working I took it apart yesterday as had an afternoon of boredom to put up with.
I found the only way I could get at the disc that goes round to alter the direction of the water was to remove the upper spray feed pipe and peer into the hole there is the white plastic disc which would move with the tip of a screwdriver so I turned it around to where the main jet went up to the top rack there is a smaller hole feeding the lower rack too and can you believe the damn thing worked just perfect !!!
So at least when I collect the Miele over the weekend its good not to have to rush to install it as my Mum is 2.5 hours away.
Nice one Austin you should have looked before declaring the Bosch unfit to work....
