It had the belt torn up and sitting in the drum when I got the dryer, $9.99 later it runs like a champ. It seems GE sold about a alf dozen differnet belts from 3 ribs to 4, 79 inches to 88 to 91.

Someone wrote on the back of this OILED Aug 06 and Oiled Sept 03, so they got regular maintenance. It has sparking ignition and fires up immediately upon hitting the start button, no pause like my Kenmores or GM Frigidaire with the HSI/glowbars. The motor is pretty dusty, but almost no lint inside the cabinet. There's almost no surface rust on the exterior bottom though it was an ugly old basement, but there's a decent amount on the interior bottom. I'll run it a week or two to be sure there aren't any other issues, then I'll take it apart and de-rust and primer it up. And clean up the motor.

It has the GE glides, not rollers, looking pretty new, so someone already did the upgrade since 1966.

The light goes on when you set the timer for Timed or the "dryness" for Automatic cycles. Then it goes off when the cycle is done. If you set the dial and never hit start, you've got a basement night light! No buzzer or bells, too bad.

And it has the pedal to open the door, I will gladly get used to that. No moisture sensing, it's the heat-versus-timer style, so far so good after about 4 loads of clothes.

Air Freshener

Here's the little bottle,. when I shake it it sounds like a minor amount of fine salt inside. I won't clean it up or I'll lose the tiny aroma, pleasant enough. When did dryer sheets first come out?

Does anyone have GE or PREMIER or maybe Hotpoint "V14" sales literature? This dryer is Model 5224BA, ser #GB208 660, and looks EXACLTY like someoone else's posting of GE V14 of 1964 to 66.

That's a really nice design! I like it. I hope you'll find a matching GE washer for it.

settings

With no literature around, it seems the AUTO settings have 2 temps and 2 amounts of dryness(just by running a half cycle, there's no moisture sensor.). But the TIMED buttons, is WASH-N-WEAR a third temp or what?

It has 2 thermostats beyond the flame in the upright flue against the back of the cabinet, a 2 wire and a three wire, and then a 3rd thermostat right below the lint filter. I haven't yet checked what's near the sparker, don't want to screw with that.

I have literature for that year, but it doesn't include the Premier gas dryers. Love that machine.

Happy for you.

There is a perfume by JLO called GLOW that smells like the fragrance in the old GE air freshener cartridges, but I guess you would have to either buy the spritzer container of perfume or buy a larger one and one of those atomizer, squeeze bulb perfume bottles like used to be on our mothers' dresers to properly dispense it. The GE literature said to use the air freshener in the last few minutes of drying so that the scent would be retained. I always pushed the air freshener key or button on these dryers when I was hanging around the appliance department. I love that fragrance.

John has the washer.

The dryness of the load could be increased by setting the auto dry pointer further toward the Heavy setting. It just meant that the machine would run longer when the auto dry control was cycling between running the heating elements and the timer motor after it reached the first cycling point when about half the moisture was evaporated. For mixed-fabric-weight loads, it was a better performer than the electronic sensor systems which would usually shut off when the lighter weight fabrics were dry, but before the heavier weight fabrics were completely dry.

John explained the two thermostats in the burner stack to me when we played around with a GE gas dryer. As I remember, the upper one is the high limit. The other, lower one is used in the low heat setting to cycle the burner to provide a low imput level of heat. The burner cycles quite rapidly on low heat because the heat from the burner flame heats up this thermostat quickly. The thermostat under the lint screen is the operating thermostat for high heat since fabrics that can be dried on high heat are not as sensitive to hotter air entering the back of the drum as are delicate fabrics. Like so many GE approaches, it was cheaper than having a two stage gas valve for the burner like the two speed WP dryers used and like old Norge dryers used to cut down the heat input from the Superfast setting although only WP had a damper to reduce airflow as well as heat input.

Damp Dry/Auto vs. Wasn'n'Wear/Timed

Mark, just a conjecture and "hunch", but it wouldn't surprise me that if the W'n'W button on timed yields a slightly different temperature than High Temp and Low Temp, that the Damp Dry Button would yield the very same temperature as the W'n'W button yields, but for the auto dry timer segment. Thus just adjusting the degree of dryness by just "how dry" you set the timer on Auto Dry.

Very nice Mark!
Was curious about the BTU's of the dryer.
Is it a regular "in-shot" burner style?
Could you tell who made the gas valve?
It looks like your new dryer is in fantastic shape!
