hey, i got this bendix super compact washing machine "working" but leaking, it turns out that it doesnt work, and it doesnt leak. i looked inside to find a few wires had come undone, so i put them back where they should be, and changed the fuse.. but still no life.
Then i looked at the motor and it is in a really bad way, and a few bits are falling off it. ive removed it to have a proper look.
Also, the machine to my knowledge doesnt leak at all, but there is actually water stains/rust on the bottom, so its a strange one.
pics to follow.

the motor

in this little white plastic thing, there are little metal triangles that move as the motor is turned.. however the white thing is snapped in a couple of places and the metal things have fallen out of those places.

the white thing

does anybody actually know what it is? and what effect it has on the machine?

motor

here is the motor.. it sounds awful, is covered in carbon dust and is quite rusty.
But what could cause the machine to have no power what so ever?? the pump doesnt even come on

white thing

i think the white thing is just something the belt goes onto,

if you can get a motor get it, or find someone to rebuild it, build one for you.

the compresser ( think its called that show you pic in a bit ) may need replacing as that went on my hotpoint

ooooh so maybe thats broken?:P
what about the motor, not sure if it works.. been told that its an induction motor yet theres a lot of carbon dust around it, and doesnt seem very healthy

Good luck with it! I have one back in my shed in Scotland but I never managed to get it working properly. If I recall correctly, the hanging weight is part of the out of balance detector. As there is no suspension the machine will tend to wander around the room on spin if it's out of balance, so the device switches it to redistribute mode if it shakes too much on spin. The mechanism is adjustable but is very tricky to get just right. I think the motor pulley varies it's width by centrifugal action to alter the gearing.
On mine the pump leaked so I adapted a modern pump to fit. You might find the pump only leaks when pumping.

If the pump is not working either, it sounds like the fault is more basic than the motor. You said there were some wires off, how did you know where to put them?
I have no plans for visiting Scotland at present but if I do go by car I could probably drop off the whole machine to you on the way down to Dover.
Mine is working apart from the shaking or not spinning, depending on how I set the out of balance gubbins.

oh right, fair enough, i knew where to put them as there was literally one or 2 wires off.. so i just put them where there was an empty spot as it was really easy to tell.
and oh ok thankyou :) have been told it could be the supressor? even though the motor is in a really really bad way

Is it filling up with water? If it is, the suppressor is probably OK. Is the timer going round? If it is filling OK, is the door switch working? Is it heating the water? You will see there is a mechanical linkage between the timer and the drum pulley. You can try turning the drum by hand a few times to see if anything different happens at different settings of the cable / gear mechanism.

Sounds like door switch trouble. I can't remember what sort of interlock it has. It might be difficult to get at!

oh god! thats really annoying, but how would i replace it anyway? theres no replacements about:/

I think it might be best to take up the kind offer made by Amar in #20.

i have asked for a couple of parts off it, cant take the whole machine, not enough room :P

The white thing on the pulley is a clutch. These machines had them to allow them to reach spin speeds as the induction motor alone was not capable of spin speeds.

James.

Bendix 7179

I had one of these for about 5years. When I got it, it kept bursting into flames because one of the switches in the back was faulty. I replaced the switch and it worked great.
Very quick wash time, variable temperature. 550rpm spin was a pity but a 2nd spin in a spindryer and everything was done.
This was a very simple and basic machine but very clever in its simplicity.
An automatic machine without frills, the uneven load spin cancel was just a weighted pendulum.
I would still have it if the pump hadn't started to leak and then I couldn't save it.

Have you managed to get it working yet? I've only just seen this thread.
You need to push the program selector, turn to any part of the selection and release.
Do not try to turn it without pushing first.

If I can be of any help, let me know.
