DD. I bought this pair, in Almond, with an Electric Dryer, for my parents in 1991.
I think at the time, they were TOL.
Someone else would know if they had an electronic version at that time.

I bought my Whirlpool All Electronic set in Feb of 1993. It was WP's first all electronic set.

I recall someone saying that if the lid opening is small, it's a BD. I now stand corrected.

As I remember, whirlpool had electronic controls on/off from mid 70's ish all the way until around 2000? I remember seeing them here and there in the 80's but it seems like they were not very popular tho.

DD WP Washer and Dryer

combo52's profile picture

It is a DD washer, the dryer may have heating element damage if the dryer has been used very long with the dryers door seal missing.

The only Whirlpool electronic control sets I have seen prior to 1993 were ones where the cycle type and wash/rinse options were electronic, but you still had a timer knob with a circular timer. In 1993 they created an electronic control washer that had no knobs whatsoever.

IIRC correctly, there is a POD that cycles around from time to time of a late 70s/very early 80s WP electronic washer. Up until the late 80s, WP did have an all electronic set with the exception of the water level selector which was still a mechanical slide lever. I will agree, they are VERY rare as I've only seen them in pics online. The machines(and similar Kenmore model) were around $799 each so go figure. That's still alot of money today, let alone in the 80s so they likely didn't sell many.

As everyone says, these are DD.  And aren't TOL mechanical model.  The TOL would have had 2nd rinse option which there is ample room on the timer dial for taht proovision.

Bob, there may be a 2nd Rinse option.  A large toggle switch is at right of the timer.  I looked at a similar model (but with CleanTouch temp buttons and a slider for water level) for sale some years ago.

Allen,

The first touch-panel Whirlpool washer (belt-drive) debuted in 1978, model LFA-9800.  Kenmore also had a sibling-model.  Water level was mechanical.  Power-on/off was mechanical, directly tied to a holding relay IIRC.  The matching dryer had pushbuttons for cycle selection instead of touch pads, for whatever engineering decision.

This pic shows three console revisions.

Bottom is 1978-79 LFA-9800.

Middle, is 1980-81 LHA-9800.  There was also LHA-9500 with slightly fewer options.

Top would be LA9800XK, XM, or XP.

LFA-9800 Parts Listing

LHA-9500 Parts Listing

LHA-9800 Parts Listing

LA9800XK through LA9800XT Parts Listing

XK, XM, and XP are belt-drive with mechanical water level and power.
XS and XT are direct-drive with electronic power and water level, no longer mechanical toggles on the panel.  Your machines are XT, yes?  Interestingly, T in eighth position indicates 1988 model year (or 2007).  What are your serials?

But all of those have at least one mechanical switch on them. The ones we have do not have any mechanical switches on them. Even the power on/off switch is electronic.

My Model/Serial Numbers are:
Washer
Mod LA9800XTN1
Ser CB3601092

Dryer:
Mod LE9800XSN0
Ser 4206778

Here are photos of the machines:

Yes, as mentioned above, XS and XT direct-drive models eliminated mechanical water level and power switches.

CB36 = Clyde, OH, 36th week of 1992

Dryer model XS is a "year" prior to the washer XT.  Dryer serial seems incomplete.  Should begin with a letter M.  Is it MB4206778?  That'd be Marion, OH, 42nd week of 1992.

XS = 1987 model-year.
XT = 1988 model-year.

These models were produced for a considerable period of time, per the serials.

Similar to my parents' Whirlpool wall oven.  "D" model-year of 1995 but serial indicates production in 2005.  And it has an engineering revision of 15 on the model number, which is an extensive revision history.  I've rarely seen revisions higher than 4.

I saved your pictures long ago.  :-)

Yup, you are right. The dryer serial does begin with MB. I guess I was in such a hurry to write it down I forgot to include those two letters.

Since I bought these in Feb of 93 looks like the washer sat around awhile before being sold. The dryer is 10 weeks newer than the washer.

Thanks for decoding those dates for me.

Nice machines! Does anyone know the last year WP made those? I'm thinking 93/94 must have been. I was working at Sears in '95 and they had no electronic Whirlpool models available, even to order. Only electronic models were the top end Kenmores which were likely similar to those underneath. I'd occasionally cruise through Circuit City to see what they had and do not recall any electronic WPs there either. Also, did Whirlpool offer the triple dispenser back then or was that a KM exclusive? I love the simplicity of the control panel on those WPs!

The set I bought my parents had the Extra Rinse toggle to the right of the timer, just as shown in the picture.  I had never seen that and thought it was rather unique.  She had that pair for 10 years with only one repair to the washer basket, which came loose from the spin tube.
