Is someone trying to get around the recycling charge by selling it on ebay?

Ireland's implementation of Recycling charges on washing machines / other electrical gear is getting a little nutty.

As of mid 2005, all new electrical equipment has a recycle fee built into the price. This was supposed to be levied on manufacturers, but somehow it's being levied directly on customers instead.

Anyway, the problem here is that charges at the dump for accepting things like washing machines, dryers, fridges etc have gone up quite a lot. It's not possible to dispose of domestic appliances via the normal trash pick up. You can hire a skip (dumpster) but they cost nearly as much as a cheap washing machine thesedays. And because of the charges, hardly any of the retailers are taking old machines away anymore.

So, we've seen an increase in washing machines and other domestic appliances being illegally dumped down quiet country lanes etc etc.

On top of that, because of the very high waste charges. Illegal "fly tippers" are operating. These guys will take your junk for a fee and dispose of it as long as you don't ask too many questions.

Seems we've tied ourselves in knots with waste management policies.

Also, for domestic garbage as of about a year ago it has to be charged by volume / weight produced.
So, systems vary from putting a tag on your "wheelie bin" (wheeled trash receptical) that typically costs 5 euro (around US$ 6) or, in many areas, the handle of the bin has a microchip inside. When your bin is lifted, it's weighed, the microchip identifies itself to the truck and you're billed accordingly!

Because of the risk of other people placing heavy items into your trash can. We now have gravity operated locks on the lids! The bin has to be fully inverted to open it without a key. So, when the truck turns it upside down it opens, but if it's sitting upright, you need a key.

Recyclable waste is, however, collected free of charge.

It has its good points, but it's a bit worrying when you start to see people finding they've no idea where to get rid of old appliances. I have no idea how I would even go about bringing a washing machine to the dump. I, like most people, would have trouble fitting one into my car!
