Hello all... I am indeed of some advice, our newly acquired maytag A906 seames to have become moody when we are using it. What is happening is that the drive motor is going into "thermal protection" and when we go check on the laundry there she sits with a full tub of water. The dash light is on and the motor is rather warm. This seams to be intermittent and has only occurred two times since we got it.

Comparing her to the two other maytags that we have it always seamed to agitate slower and take longer to get up to speed. I have replaced both belts and cleaned and lubcicated the rollers on the motor tray. I have also talked with a good Friend of mine that is a thirty year plus veteran appliance repair man and he said it sounds like the motor is just weak from age. Dose is make since ?

Please any advice would be great

Mike

Are you running the washer from an extension cord? Also the bearings in the motor could be stiff, thus causing it to trip out on the overload.

@ Kevin yes I can post a few pics of it when I get home tonight... It should also be in the archives under the heading " Christmas present" if my memory serves me right.

I am running it off an ext cord sadly, and it is driving me nuts that I have to but it is the only way to get enough power on that side of the basement as a temp.... I have only one 120vac 20amp circuit for the entire side.....

I've had the thermal switches go bad on a Maytag motor before. Or the motor may be tired, or you may have a transmission problem.

Maytags and extension cords...

I'm thinking that the extension cord may be an issue. Maytags do not like to run on long, smaller gauge cords as they cannot pull enough power to start. If you have a multimeter, I'd check the voltage at the plug in for the washer as it starts. At rest, the voltage should be about 110v or so. when you start it, You'll most likely see the voltage drop down to the 90's or lower and that's not good. You can add a capacitor to the wiring in the washer to help with lower voltage issues (Maytag even had a kit and instructions...) which helps the motor but if the voltage drops too low, you can kill your motor.

At the very least, try to find the heaviest gauge, shortest run cord you can. That may help. I'm talking about the kind of cord that a window ac would use.

Cord

I let a repairman replace a motor on a vintage Maytag and as soon as he left the same problem occured. I was using a 50 foot drop cord. I moved things a bit and plugged the washer in directly to the outlet and never had another moments problem.

long time to get to full speed?

I'm surprised no one mentioned the transmission oil is no doubt thick. I say there is more than 1 issue going on with his A906.

Oil issues...

Good call. This also could be an issue but I was trying to help eliminate the easy stuff first. If we're lucky, the oil won't be the primary issue here...
