I am new to this forum and inexperienced in appliance repair and could really use some help from this group.
I have a KDS-16 KitchenAid dishwasher that is a great machine. I have been fixing things right along and recently the motor started making noise. I found and purchased a replacement motor. The new motor has three wires. Black Yellow and White plus the green ground. The original motor still installed has two wires Black and White plus the green ground. I would imagine that this is a replacement part motor but was wondering how it will wire into the machine? The kit came with a small transformer and a white jumper wire. Is that part of converting the three wires into two or do I just tape up the yellow wire?
Another reason that I am asking is that I actually have two replacement motors. The 1st was delivered missing the gaskets so I was sent a 2nd and have to return one. One of the motors looks to be better built with more copper windings and a thicker(one or two layers)center stack of plates but very close to the housing of the motor the yellow wire is crushed and the insulation has a very slight tear where I suspect it got banged against the center plates during shipping that when viewed through a magnifying glass shows a very small amount of exposed wire. Is it worth chancing this motor or would I be better off keeping the one that at least looks less husky(may not be) but has better connecting wires? Is there a way to replace the Yellow wire by opening the housing if I keep it and the wire failed. The manufactures date on each motor shows 803AF on one and 412AF on another I don't know what that means or if age matters. I greatly appreciate any help that you can provide. Thank You in advance.

KDS-16 Motors

The new motor you got with more wires and a motor start relay is a newer design motor and I have never seen one of these that will fit the KD16 machines. The look of the motor will have no functional effect on its operation, and even though the windings look like copper they are actually aluminum with copper colored coating.

You may have several other questions about this motor change, if you Email me you phone# I will be happy to call as without pictures and other information it will be nearly impossible to answer all your questions properly, Good Luck , John.

Right motor..hopefully and some help

This is an Emerson built motor that will replace the Hobart motor. They do make them to fit the 15,16,17 series as they are the same as those used in the WM and WM1 and WMES series machines based on the 16 series domestic units.

You need to use the yellow wire as it is used to start the motor in the right direction as well as the motor start relay. It is not a transformer.

I will attach an instruction sheet that should have come with the motor kit. It should help explain the wiring.

You may need to make the jumper wire if it is not there with your kit. Make sure you mount the relay with the word "TOP" facing up or you will burn out the motor immediately.

Don't even think of using the motor with the crushed wires, It will be problematic forever.

Hope this helps

KitchenAid KDS-16 Dishwasher Motor Question

Thank you very much to both of you.
Now I understand what I am looking at.

John, Thanks for the offer to discuss over the phone I may take you up on that.

Stevet, the installation sheet is a great help.
The part that I purchased is 4171907. It comes with two gaskets. Will I be using both? One is round and the other has a jog in the circle. I understand were the 2nd ones goes but can not determine where the round one of the same diameter in installed?
Does the O ring go under or I guess inside the drain impeller seal or does it go inside the top of the impeller against the shaft? I have a parts diagram but no list that correstponds to the numbers. Any advise there would be of great help.
Thank you for the information regarding the relay. I see where it says UP with the arrows pointing up. I will make sure to install that way. Given that these are old stock parts is there any way to test the relay 1st before I connect to the motor since a failure would be catestrophic. The white wire on my machine does not go directly to the inlet valve. I goes to a terminal block. Should I skip the terminal block and connect right to the valve or doesn't it matter?

Thanks again to both of you for your help. If there are any pitfalls that your experience tells you i.e. other parts that I should expect to have to replace I would appreciate it. One last thing. The screw at the top of the wash impeller seems tight to me. I have yet to really attemp to remove it. Is it a left handed thread or does it loosen counter clockwise? If it is a normal screw any advise as to how to loosen without stripping. i.e. vinegar?

Regards
