Were Tappan dishwashers good performers? Was it The Price is Right that gave away a lot of Tappan appliances?
Is it just the way the cutlery basket is leaning or does the bottom right rack look like it is starting to buckle?

WOW, what a waist of space on the lower rack! Did the wash arm (or something) stick up requiring the lower rack to be shaped like this?

Speaking of racks, what an odd rack shape. I would think that elevated center would limit the size and type of cookware the lower rack would accept. Is this unique shape due to the washing apparatus?

Yes - these dishwashers had a really oddball washing system (I can only compare it to the James 'wall of water'). I found one in Montreal about 3 years ago but it was being sold with a range and refrigerator that I didn't really want so I missed on it... Dang!!

My Godfather and his wife bought a house in 1962 or 1963 that had the builder's model.  In fact, our 1961 house had the O'Keefe & Merrit brand of the same machine.  It got swapped out with the Waste King.  I was only about 9 or so last time I saw this (I was alwaqys more enthralled with the WO65 or the WCI65.  Anyway, this machine when it was running, think of what your tires and the water sounds like as your driving down the expresswqay while it's raining or very wet pavement.  Actually, if you notice tires being drenched with water on the car in the lane next to yours is kind of like what this was similar to.  The reason why the bopttom rack is shaped like it is because there was a long cylindrical tube that ran the length of the machine front to back on the bottom.  At the back of this tube were baffles which caused the water (think almost like an impeller on its side) to be shot up and over the load of dishes.  The tube spun ijn one directyion for a couple of minutes.  Paused for a timer increment.  And then ran the opposite directoin ) clockwise and counterclockwise.  This was probably the most pathetic dishwasher I've ever come across as far as cleaning.  it didn't do anything.  But I can still hear the machine as the motor wound up to start drenching.  then it would pause and drench the opposite direction.  The "tube" also ran while drying, "forced air drying" lol.  The BOL timer dial had normal, short, rinse & hold, rinse & dry, and plate warmer marking on the dial.  Smoeone here sent me a copy of a brochure or something that had to do with the TOL model in today's POD, but I cannot find it around here.  I know I haven't thrown it out.  Glad we swapped out the O&M for the Waste King before we moved into the new house.  BTW, this Tappan was replaced by the built-in version of that cdoppertone Hotpoint portable in like 1973 or 1974.  It served a family of 4 for 8 or 9 years.   I believe combo52 has one of these in his museum collection. And it really was quiet for a dishwasher in its day.

Tappan Drum Style DWs

While very interesting machines were probably the WORST cleaning full sized built-in DWs ever made, check the old CRs I think it was dead last, even worst than GE.

The joke's on me: I was slow to hit the 'post' button on my first entry in this thread, only to find later that Kevin had asked the same question and beat me to the buzzer, LOL!

Thanks for the info, John and Bob. I'd seen this POD several times and figured there must be a logical reason for that odd rack shape. I certainly wouldn't be to fit most of my cookware in that Tappen.
