Hi all.

Logging into my inbox two Saturdays ago, I was to find a very unexpected e-mail.

Bit of background.
Back in March 2008, I was perusing another appliance forum and stumbled across an enquiry concerning a Matchbox keymatic with a dicky timer.
Not knowing the status of the machine, whether it was a recently in use daily driver in danger of imminent scrapping, or a collection machine belonging to a non member of Discuss o Mat, I signed up and sent the enquirer a message.

At that time I hadn't accumulated the information I have since found and all I was able to do was ask that it not be scrapped and enquire what the problem was.
Transpired that the machine had stopped heating, with the enquirer (Richard) being of the opinion that the contacts in the timer had burned out.
The machine was in no danger of being scrapped and was a backburner repair project, that he planned to start when he had the time.

I let him know that he should never scrap it and that should he wish to dispose of it, that I would be interested in taking it on and left it at that.

Then in April 2011, I stumbled across a further enquiry from Richard appealing for help with the machine.
In the intervening years I had managed to acquire a copy of the official Hoover servicing information, which includes full circuit and wiring diagrams and exploded drawings.
I got back in touch and sent him BIG photographs of the servicing information for the 3243H, to aid his repair of the machine.
Then I left it at that.

Roll forwards to Satuday 16th February 2013 and an e-mail explaining that, due to other work taking precedence and little liklihood of ever finding time to get the machine repaired, the machine was up for disposal and available to me if I still wanted it.

Finally paid off Paul

well done, you've put in a lot of effert and patience on this, and its paid off brilliantly, I know you will love it.

I was thinking earlier, your most longed for hoover machines have taken the most perserverance and effort to obtain, cant wait to see it and hopefully help get it washing again. One things for sure, the chrome and body work will be buffed to perfection. That early 70's line up is on its way.

Looking forward to photos

Mathew

Not for free I hasten to add, I agreed a sale and arranged to go and collect the machine from south of Guildford on Saturday just gone.

Encountering snow flurries on the M1, I did wonder whether I should have arranged a different weekend to collect, but collect I did.

I got there at around half 9 and was greeted by Richard, with the 3243H being by the entrance door.
Having recovered from the shock of encountering a version 2 3243H Keyatic De Luxe for the first time ever, I was asked whether I had had any breakfast!
Bacon sandwiches and a breakfast salad were rustled up for me by Richard and his partner Ana - never had that happen to me before.
Obviously appreciative of vintage machines, the kitchen contained a late 1970s Sharp microwave, a Belling cooker from the 1980s and an Aristocrat branded fridge from the early 80s.
I think the fridge was a Zanussi exclusive line, sold through the likes of TIGER etc.

If they read this thread, can I publicly thanks Richard and Ana for their hospitality and kindness and it was lovely to meet you. Good luck and all power to you with the educational charity you are both involved with and hope all goes well.

Two and a bit hours later the car was packed and I set off back for Derby. Somehow in the time I was down there, as well as the 3243H, a Hoover 3019 spinarinse climbed in the car, as did a Hollandier De Luxe cylinder vacuum cleaner!

I also came away with 5 leaflets for the new 1986 Range of Philips series 90, right hand drive machines and a 1985 AEG laundry range brochure!
These had been kept from when Richard went out shopping for the 3243H's replacement, which turned out to be a Philips AWB073 De Luxe that is still going today.
I will share these leaflets and brochures in another thread in the coming weeks.

Landing back in Derby at around half two, the car was unloaded and the 3243H landed in its new home....

As with all vintage 70's hoovers and just like the two discoveries in Australia, we need a new door seal, with the original having turned to sticky, molten rubber ...

Round to the solonoids - seem to remember that Gary had to service his 3243H version 1's solonoids as, to get them to close, he had to tap them with a hammer.

Am half expecting these to give similar issues, as they havent had water through them since late 1985.
When the 3236H from Plymouth was re-energised, this was discovered to have weeping solonoids - just like with my parents original machine....

Here is the non-standard feature on the back of the machine, in the form of a snuggly fitting rocker switch.

The machine was taken out of service due to the timer not switching in the heater and I am thinking that this switch is a manual on/off switch for the heater!
One wire heads to the heater element and one other wire heads upwards towards the timer....

The gizmo with the fuse

is the transformer which powers the low voltage lights on the facia to indicate wash progress. No leds back then.

Now how long do we have to wait for the full frontal shot?

Ohhhh, go on then Mathew!

Here you go and final picture for the night.

This was Saturday night and as the machine was collected, pre cleaning - it was well cared for during its near 27 years of dormancy.

Will post the photos of the 3.5 hour Sunday spit and polish session tomorrow.

Argh Paul this is such excellent news, yes that switch is defo an attempt to manually control the heater, the other wires should be easy to locate on the programer, from the diagram.

His idea of leaving the tub exhaust pipe dangling is fine unles you intend doing a boil wash, coz you will fill the machine with steam..........

Well as you know already know these are wonderful looking and performing machines, Mat insists that i can have mine back any time, but everytine i ring him i get some chinese take away in belfast?.

Paul thanks for opening this thread, you know mat or i can help you out so your in safe hands trust us we are not meat product producers

beautiful Paul

and thats before you've worked your polishing love on it.

Just as an observation, that additional switch at the back is the same rocker switch as fitted to the main on off on the facia. So it isnt just any switch.

Well done again, thns posting the final pic, I know you like to keep us wanting more.

Hi Gary.

I am pretty sure that the extra switch was installed during the repair process, but hopefully not tried for, as you say, a nice warm or hot wash would fill the cabinet with lovely steam being vented right underneath the timer.

I am sure it would have been a case of get the switch in there, then cut an extra hole somewhere else to vent from. I hope so anyway!

Black door seals on machines from the 70s just look soooooo much better than the replacement grey. I look at the 3236H and the grey still jarrs with me.
Yet the thought of a black door seal on a Hotpoint New Generation is just NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Strange eh! Perhaps its just about being authentic with me.

BUT
there is one model of Bosch that you can go and see in Currys today - think its a top end model - and it has a black door seal. You know what - it looks great with it and to my eyes it adds an extra touch of smartness. Its the only machine in the entire store with a black door seal.

Gary and Mathew.
I am really eager for us all to have a gander at this machine and see exactly whats what with it, so will try and make it a sooner rather than later project somewhere.
I made a point of pushing the on off buttons on the fascia Mathew and they still feel like they are engaging a rocker switch behind them.

Be easier to live with on/off at the back of the machine, rather than heater, but will live with either as required.

Paul

To Gary, he needs the "E" to work on his shell suites , trackies and sweats......Lol

Paul, well done on getting the Keymatic, looks in fine fettle after all the polishing, interesting set up with the switch, have you heard if the previous owner did fit the switch or I wonder if it was a retro fit from Hoover Service etc to do with hot / cold / mix fill, although its a bit of a pain round the back if under a worktop...need to check the updates manual as I seem to remember reading about a lot of fixes and superceeding of timers..

Aww mike how can you say that program E does all my stuff, but i have to admit those leggins you wore when we went out and then you left under the bed when you were last here, i could see why you had left them but after a few boil washes and some colour bleach i got the seat staines out, see :-)

It seems a shame to throw them because of a few stains and they fit you perfectly

I am offended Mr King, for the machine hasnt been cleaned in either photograph! lol :-)

Richard kept the machine in a warm climate and always undercover, so it has survived its long period of dormancy in superb external condition. There are brown painted patches and dots which Richard has since confirmed is rust proofer, so will go over those with the old humbrol.
There is a small patch above the powder drawer and one underneath the fascia, beneath the keyplate store, that also require a dab of rust proofer, followed by white humbrol.

Of the three and a half hours spent cleaning and polishing a good half was spent polishing the fascia and door ............. then the bloody sun went in! Sodding typical!!! I then packed up, put the machine away, shut the garage door and the sun came out again! ARGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Will upload the cleaning photos tomorrow evening, so you can see what if any difference I managed to effect:-)

Hi Leon.

Nope, this machine is the standard width - the same bodyshell as your Automatic 455.

In fact, when you take the lid off your 455, you should see all the cut outs in the bodyshell to allow the internals of my 3243H to be grafted into your 455's bodyshell. That is unless they treated the export machines differently.

On the basis that they didnt, you should find a rectangular strip of metal cut out from the middle of the bodyshell, behind the fascia.
This is where, were your 455 to have become a Keymatic in the factory, the wiring and bulbs for its time-lights would have gone.
The photo below is of a 3022 dryer de Luxe and shows all the cutouts, to fit a washing machines internals into the same bodyshell....

Paul, congratulation on a superb machine.

This last weekend while concluding an adoption in Cardiff I was introduced and totally blown away by Mathew’s “cough cough Jill Yuen King Prawn” Keymatic and have been absolutely converted to HOOVER. I just could not stop watching this fine machine at work and the sound of the spin, sweet just sweet. Thank you Mathew for a marvellous Hoover introduction.

More on the adoption in the future.

Stunning machine absolutely stunning, Lee

My Aunty had the A3110 and I remember a friend of mine in York having the Electra version. I always thought it was such a smart design with the orange graphics and the half load button - would love to get hold of one though my first automatic I bought second hand was the A3060

Well done Paul on the keymatic. Look forward to following progress

Hi stephen.

Glad you like and thanks for posting your reminiscences. Obviously there are A3110's in safe hands, as well as A3060's.
There is also an Electra A3E12 (the leccy board A3110) in the safe hands of Mike King and I recently helped the Joe and Jemima Public owners of an Electra A3E10 keep it going for a few more years - blocked pressure vessel.

They are all still out there!

Wow Paul. It's looking fantastic. That peek stuff seems to work a treat along with some good old elbow grease no doubt - it looks almost like new and the indicator lights look great. Great to that it has its original drain hose too - I've always preferred the rubber hoses to the plastic ones.

Thanks for the Electra pic too.
Cheers
S

Well Paul, NOW I can see the difference...ha ha, great work, looking forward to seeing it in action soon...are all the indicator bulbs working as well?

Neat!

Machine looks absolutely fantabulous after that polishing up - almost new to my eyes! Lets hope she's a performer too :-)

Quick question, do those little plastic "floppy disk" looking things control the cycle, like those old hospital menus you had to punch your order selection on? Or are they simply for show, or some sort of dummy control?

Would definitely love to own one of these - such a smart looker.

Yes they select the cycle, they act like the dial you would turn on a normal automatic.

Thanks guys for the comments.

Really is good stuff Seamus - thanks for letting us know about Peek!

Hi steve. Was also very pleased that it has managed to retain its original hose and it seems to be in good condition too. It doesnt feel brittle, though I wouldnt want to put it under too much stress.

Hi Washer111. James has it - the keyplates have notches on each side. The keyplate is inserted into the card reader which reads the edge of the plate, clicking as it goes and identifying the programme selected.
Its a lovely process, especially when combined with the keymatic timelines, timedial or timelights (which style depends on which generation of Keymatic you are watching) and all the accompanying clicking.

In the photo below, the reader is the the front, with the programmer timer set behind it...

Roll on the warmer months and a suitable get together weekend and then maybe we will get the chance to plug her in and see what's what! Until then....

A brief Keymatic history

1961 to 1964 model 3224.

The machine is Mike's and the photo hails from my first ever wash-in, back in 2007.

Looking great Paul, any news on the switch, was it a retro fit for the heater?

Post# 666798 , Reply# 73   3/18/2013 at 14:52 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

1964 to circa 1966 model 3226.

The machine below belongs to Mathew, with the photo taken at Mike's.

1966 to 1967 model 3203.

The first widebody machine, with this example also belonging to Mathew. The photograph was taken back in 2008 at the time of its unveiling to the collector world.

1967 to 1969 model 3203H.

As per model 3203 in every respect, apart from it being a hot and cold fill. One of these models has yet to be preserved:-(

Post# 666803 , Reply# 76   3/18/2013 at 15:03 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

1969 to 1971 model 3223H.

The first keymatic with a powder drawer and, as with the 3203H, one of these models is yet to be confirmed as preserved (though Hoover possibly/probably has one of these - fingers crossed they moved it!).

This model ran during the early stage of the Matchbox era, whilst Hoover tried to cram the keymatic into the smaller bodyshell.

Post# 666804 , Reply# 77   3/18/2013 at 15:06 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

In 1971 Hoover managed it and created the first version 3243H.

This machine was saved by gary and is now cared for by Mathew. I remember the excitement when this machine surfaced - was the first preserved Matchbox!

This version ran into 1972....

Post# 666805 , Reply# 78   3/18/2013 at 15:09 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

....when the colour scheme was changed to create the 2nd version 3243H.

The newest preserved Keymatic, this model ran through to early 1975.

Post# 666806 , Reply# 79   3/18/2013 at 15:15 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

1975 to 1978 model A3008.

Mikes famous machine.

Post# 666808 , Reply# 80   3/18/2013 at 15:19 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

Whilst the A3008 was the core range model, Hoover extended the life of the Matchbox version, on behalf of the Electricity Board.

Model A3050 was in production from around 1975 through to circa 1978.

This is the third and final non-preserved model:-(

Post# 666812 , Reply# 81   3/18/2013 at 15:22 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

1978 to 1980 model A3062.

The Keymatic finally becomes an 1100 - a little bit of 'New Magic'!

The machine below is Mathew's, whilst there is also a 2nd preserved example courtesy of Gary and now in Al's safe pair of hands.

Post# 666817 , Reply# 82   3/18/2013 at 15:28 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)
& finally

1980 through to circa 1982 model A3112 - the final Keymatic.

The machine below is Mathew's, with an unusual silver finish fascia.

Matthew and Seamus also have a lovely original finish A3112, but I dont have a photo to hand of it. Any chance of a nice BIG photo of your A3112 guys?

Post# 666820 , Reply# 83   3/18/2013 at 15:32 (4,028 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

Hi Mike.

Not confirmed (awaiting the opportunity for you technicians to look at it), but current thinking is that the switch is a more than likely to be a manual on/off switch for the heater, a function that the timer no longer performs.

Maybe the summer will provide an opportunity to find out?

Paul

Great to see the history timeline of these in photos Paul. I hadn't realised there were so many variants.

I wish I would get a nice email in my inbox like you did. I only seem to get Amazon deals all the time!! Well done again on such a lovely machine. Look forward to some vids soon

Thanks for providing the timeline of these machines. The model that you've just restored, and the model before it looks the best, along with A3112, with its progress display.

I look forward to seeing some videos of these in action, the water level and washing action in the drum. Are there any videos of Hoover machines on YouTube (or elsewhere)?

that machine cleaned up nicely, what did you use Paul?  Love the fascia colors on the front. But 27 connections to the timer box?? Holy moly you would need someone standing beside you with the wiring diagram just to get around!!

"I also like the prayer mat infront of the machine it seems so fitting " GARY! too funny!

I can’t seem to reduce the contrast and brightness enough on my monitor, all that shiny chrome; I put my shades on, that’s better.

Wow what a line up, so luck that so many have been saved and in good hands.

Never mind Lee maybe a combination of all these shiny Hoovers and a heavy session over the weekend are contributing to your aching eyes ;-)

JON and the prayer mat
Well as you know yourself mate, some of these machines are treated with utmost reverance and rightly so

Aww i miss them if i could have held onto the 3243 for summer washing only..............hmm i would have to remove a bit more cupboard space,
i wonder how mal would have taken that :-0

Ahh well this is still a lovely thread so i wish you well Paul and if i can ever get to Mats when you and your machine are there i will gladly sit on me arse doing nothing except to poke mat with me stick and say "not the way i would have done it", but as you know "every little helps" :-)

Picture attached of Mike in awe and paying his respects to a Hoover 3062 keymatic

there'll be no talk

of cupboards being removed Gary, you've all the lower spin speed options you need on the A3190 for summer washing.

Paul its great seeing your excellent work, and always good to see the photo gallery of keymatics.

Look forward to helping you look at the timer issues too, though a little apprehensive about Gary being around, I don't like to think of him having any regrets.

Mathew

Hi Jon.

The metal polish is called Peek - a piccy of the tube appears in one of the earlier photos.
Recommended to me by Seamus, after it worked the door of his and Matthews Bendix 7446 dryer upto a lovely shine. Really is good stuff.

The bodyshell is brought up with a pink paster (how apt for this forum), though I cant remember what it is called. I will check over the weekend.
Its an abrasive oven cleaner style paste, that you use sparingly and water down till it foams in the palm of your hand. Only then is it thin enough to remove grime and imperfections, whilst not doing damage to the enamel.

The Keymatic just has normal polish on it at the moment though, once the paint touching up has been carried out, I will apply a liberal layer of car polish.

Takes an age for sure, but the results are worth it:-)
Paul

Hi Seamus.

Cheers for the photo of yours and Matt's A3112 - Kelly still looks grand for her age. Amazing how a chance mention to your ex-colleagues ensured its survival.

Will have to think of a name for my 3243H, though I have always felt matchboxes to be male, especially with the Keymatic model.
I think it has something to do with the Matchbox Keymatic being quite an agressive design - quite a plain, yet bling at the same time, fascia and apart from the Hoover roundel its all sharp edges and angles. The red nameplate of the version2 adds a bit of brashness too, as well as the the colour lights all of bright colours.

I can imagine a 3243H-v2 having a brawl in a pub, whilst I can see an A3112 daintily prancing through a meadow stopping occasionally to sniff the flowers. lol.

I think I am going a bit mad - its been a difficult and stressful week! :-)

Paul

I must stop drinking on the weekends, hangovers seem to last even longer, now the photos look inverted instead of toooo bright!! Maybe a hair of the dog will sort it.

I second the naming “the matrix”

When the A3112 was found...

seamusuk's profile picture
A link to the thread- bearings were not needed in the end just the crush washer which was expertly sorted by Mathew on one of his visits. He also fitted a new suspension kit and sourced and fitted a new door microswitch when it failed, so he is responsible for her current state and deserves a big thank you :). The suppressor was removed and bypassed- they are not really needed now as digital signals are not prone to electrical interference.

Did this wonderful hoover keymatic get switched on and used? I would love to see some videos of it on different cycles
It's so great!

If it cost £138.34 in 1974 it would cost £1200 now in 2014. It would be like buying a miele machine today! Thank god for catalogues so you could spread it on the weekly!
