I've gotten a lot of help on this forum for my Maytag J2LP. Here's the update and another request.

- Bought machine from someone who said it worked but didn't have a plug.
- Clarified (after I bought it) that it worked 15 years ago when put in storage.
- Had a friend put on plug and test. It smoked so we sent the motor in for repair.
- Shop cleaned out 15 years of dust and crud and said it worked good.
- Ran one wash through & it smoked even more.
- Took it back to shop. They stated I'd gotten it really hot, it works but to check the agitator to see if it is binding. If I get it hot again, I'll burn it up.
- Put motor back in and turned on with nothing in machine. Agitator spins easily. Machine started smoking again.

The motor turns nice and easy if not in the machine. When it is in machine with belt, it still seems free, but smokes almost immediately after being plugged in. I can't figure out why. (OK, the friend who is working on the machine can't figure out why, not me.) He's going to be taking the motor apart and cleaning all the gears, saving the seals, etc. Here are my questions:

- Anyone have any advice/hints for him on taking this apart?
- This is beginning to look like a lost cause. Is there anywhere to get a replacement motor?
- Is there another (modern) motor I could get as a substitute for this motor. One that would fit?

I'll take all the advice I can get on this problem. I would so like to use my J2LP!

Check ebay periodically

In the last couple of months, several times I've seen old Maytag motors available.

As far as the actual problem goes - I'd check the power drive of the transmission to see if it's turning easily when the belt is on. If not, that could be your problem, meaning that needs lubricating.

Disconnect the belt,

Then run the motor. It will have no resistance and should not over heat at all. If it still smokes then, it's a bad motor. At the same time you can try turning the pulley by hand like Brad suggested and see if it feels hard to turn. It shouldn't be hard to turn at all. Mine would lock up and the motor would shut itself off in about 30 seconds. These motors have a thermal switch that shuts them off if they get too hot. Since yours smokes, I suspect it needs to be replaced. I've seen them on Ebay or I bet you could buy a used one from Phil or Dave for not too much money.

Luckily, it's easy to R&R a motor.

I had

to buy a new motor a while back. I called Phil and he made me a great deal on one for $25. I put it on and it has been running weekly for 1 1/2 years. Good Luck. I also agree with the above about removing the belt and trying to turn both the motor and power unit pulleys by hand. They should both move freely.

for not having given you the info to contact Phil. He also has phone numbers he welcomes calls to. His shop number is 607-869-2263 and he uses his cell also at 315-246-5518. I have no info on Dave but Brad has given you that. I hope Phil or Dave can help you out. Thanks Brad for filling in the blanks I left missing !!
