I have found a Speed Queen Washer on my local Craigslist but having difficulty identifying it. I am trying to get some information from the seller, but it is at her father's house, so she is not near it today. I was wondering if anybody could get me a year, model, or even other pics. Any info regarding this machine would be great.

Hi Brian,

Should be a stainless steel perforated tub with a belt driven pump. Well made machine, but hard to service. The tub seal does tend to leak eventually. Hope this helps. Straight vane agitator and compensating belt drive system. All Amana/Speed Queen perforated tub machines tend to eat belts sooner rather than later.

Thanks for that info John, the only thing the seller told me was they thought it was at least 15 years old and was not used in 9 years. Claims it worked when last used. (You know, the usual spiel.)

Never had a stainless steel tub machine before, so that will be pretty cool, and that SQ agitator I like so much.

I think the first thing will be to put very hot water in the tub for a little bit and hopefully the seal will not leak.

What do you mean by a compensating belt drive system? All that comes to mind is something similar to Maytag's that move the motor back and forth on a carriage.

No worries about servicing, that's what I have Yogitunes for lol (Ducks and runs!)

I heard about that belt eating habit, well we shall find out soon enough.

Belt Eating

I think the belt eating is hit or miss. My Aunt has an Amana set that are close to 15 years old and still running on the original belt. Only repair has been a heating element in the dryer.

Hi Brian,

Yes it is similar to the Maytag but the motor does not slide. Instead it has a pulley that slips the belt during pumpout.
This model may not eat belts because the pump might be driven by it's own cogged belt. I would change both belts when you get it, just to be sure.

Alright, cool. I am getting the machine on Friday around 7pm. Got to bring it out of a basement. Lovely! lol.

Any literature or if anyone can venture a model number that I can look up a manual would be great. Want to get a head start with reading.

We have a very similar machine (same control panel, knobs, etc, slightly different colors on the controls) from 1989, and as far as I know, it has never had a repair. It does need new belts though, and the timer knob is messed up but still functions. It washes great though. The model ie: AA5221WD. That should give you the info you need, because, like I said, it appears to have the same cycles and features.

This is all very helpful info. I am excited for tomorrow evening now. Will take some pictures when I get it.

Anything I should look out for when I am moving it and what would be a good way to brace the tub? It should fit in my van standing, but just in case, I'd rather not have the tub banging into the outer tub.

Post# 663070 , Reply# 13   2/28/2013 at 14:57 (4,071 days old) by dustin92 (Jackson, MI)

If it will fit in your vehicle standing up, I wouldnt worry about bracing the tub, ours has pretty firm suspension, and holds the tub pretty tight. Are you installing it on a concrete floor? Ours is on a concrete floor in the basement, and spins rock solid smooth, but our other Speed Queen (slightly newer model) was on a wood floor, and liked to dance.

Hey Dustin,

Yea I was figuring it would stand up, but wasn't 100% sure. This will be on a concrete floor in my basement. Good to know about the suspension.

Actually Brian...where the heck are you gonna fit another machine in your basement?

I told you before, think stackables!

of course it will fit...

just remember that the van is taller inside right behind the
front seats and that a dryer is easier to stand upright in the back

Non Solid Tub SQ Washers 1980 On Through Today

combo52's profile picture

Are all potentially hard on the main drive belt, Like MT, 1970s Westinghouse washers and then all top loaders from WCI- Frigidaire. They were too cheap to use a clutch to take up the stress of tying to spin out a full tub of water and clothing while the pump expelled the water. The main drive belt lasted best on MT washers because it was longer and MT had the motor moving so no idler pulley was used that flexed the belt backwards, MT also used larger pulleys which again flexed the belt less and the larger pulleys kept the belt temperature down [ see I do say good things about MT helical drive washers, when warranted ].

Brain L the SQ in question was a decent washer, but it tended to be noisy and very boring, and if the main tub seal fails send it to the scrap pile. If you get it I would inspect the belts carefully and if they look good I would not waste your time and money replacing them, after all we are not talking about taking a long hi-speed car trip on 20 year old tires. New belts will not make most washers and dryers work a bit better if their is nothing wrong with the belts that are on the machine now.

IIRC, this is the same Marathon washer, that was in the strange stack pair where the washer pulled out an angle under the dryer. I know for sure that this design or similar was around in 1984. The "Energy House" at the NOLA worlds fair had the stacked set on display. Pulling the washer out for loading was not a job for a weakling. Sears also sold the marathon machines when they became "Brand Central" alr

Mid 80s SQ Stacked Washer & Dryer

combo52's profile picture

This is indeed essentially the same washer mechanism as what SQ used in their unusual tilt-out stack machine. The only real difference in the washer was that the washer in the stack used an electric drain pump so the stack machine did a much better job of getting grit and sand out of loads of clothing because as the machine was agitating the grit could just settle into the outer tub. Then when the washer goes to drain only the drain pump comes on at first till the machine is over 1/2 empty [ partial neutral drain ] and then it starts spinning to help flush dirt out of the bottom of the outer tub.

Appreciate the tips there John, as always I appreciate your insight into appliances. I will take a look at the belts when I get it home and since it had been sitting for a while, I will put some really hot water in the outer tub to swell the seal. Meanwhile, I will take a quick look over the belts to make sure they are in decent condition. In either case, I may want to still purchase a backup set in case these do fail down the road. Nothing like failures at the worse possible moment.

Thank you everyone for the info. I am excited to get the machine tonight and we will see how it goes.

Can anyone speculate as to the reason why it appears that Speed Queen is so popular in commercial laundry with a (seemingly) unreliable mechanism?

Post# 663369 , Reply# 29   3/1/2013 at 21:46 (4,070 days old) by whirlcool (Just North Of Houston, Texas)

Is that a painted wash tub in that Speed Queen? Blastphemy! I thought all Speed Queen automatics had SS tubs.

But it is a very nice looking washer!

Lebron, that is a very good question. Marketing & service area? SQ has had many different parent companies something like Barton & Seeling, McGraw Edison, Raytheon, Goodman and Alliance. It is still amazing to me that SQ was excluded from the "home laundry" business for sometime because of a business deal. I can not remember all that went on with that. Some one here will remember. LOL, it was long before WP owned almost every brand name. alr

No Stainless Steel Tub

brianl's profile picture
I was disappointed too at that. It definitely seems factory though. It looks to good to be home done.

On a different note, weird issue with pics. Took pics with iPhone, emailed them to myself so I could render with windows pc. Turned the photos upright as iPhone likes to turn them. Posted them and they seem fine and upright on windows pc. Go on my iPad, and the pics are stretched and sideways.

Any ideas?

1980s Speed Queen Washers

SQ has almost always made both porcelain coated tubs and SS tubs for both home and commercial machines, the porcelain tubs are not only smother when new but look better and normally hold up very well without wasting dwindling world supplies of nickle, chrome, and copper.

the tag alone tells all....a Raytheon company......not that its a bad thing, but these are the ones with potential belt and seal issues.....

when I got mine, the belts were worn, and the pump did not turn smoothly.....but knock on wood, no seal issues.....mine dates to the early 80's change over from solid tub to perforated....

it is hit or mis with the Stainless tubs.....mine is dark porcelain....

odd for me, I had a white speckled porcelain solid tub decades ago, same control panel as the one I have now, and side opening lid....

Recirculation Filter?

brianl's profile picture
Not sure what the quick waterfall is every time I start the machine with a tub full of water. Anyone know what it is? The only thing there is the fill flume and the incoming water looks nothing like that when filling. Don't see any other hoses either. Pump has one hose in and one hose out. Am I missing something obvious?

Brian,

I think that is backwash from the pump. When you start the machine in agitation, the water in the pump backwashes ( pushes) into the bottom of the tub, then up to the top of the tub rim, whick I think is perforated. Does it also fill through the tub ring? It may not do it with less than a full tub of water. Just a thought.

Post# 663986 , Reply# 40   3/5/2013 at 13:05 (4,066 days old) by BrianL (Saddle Brook, New Jersey)
You may be right about that

brianl's profile picture
The fill flume is right above the filter ring right in the same place you see the water waterfall out. I didn't realize that the pump could have so much force as to backwash that far up and over the ring.

To that end, what's the point of a filter ring with no filtering mechanism, and could one modify the machine to make use of the filter?

Post# 663991 , Reply# 41   3/5/2013 at 13:21 (4,066 days old) by coldspot66 (Plymouth, Mass)

There was a port on the top of the pump for filter models. I think they eliminated the recirculating filter and pump and used a static filter attached to the bottom of the tub. Yours may have the static filter mounted to the bottom of the inner tub. The pump for the recirc models had a port at the top of the filter with a hose directed at the filter ring. It would , supposedly spin off the lint during the spin cycle, thus they could call it self cleaning.

2015 Speed Queen TL agitator speed

I am looking into purchasing a 2015 top load Speed Queen. I see in the literature that it has a 2-speed motor. Is that 2 speed only for the spin cycle or does it apply to the wash cycles too, e.g, higher agitation for heavy duty and slower agitation for delicates?

Agitator Speed Combos

Combo52 - Thank you for answering my question. I also wanted to tell people that I emailed Speed Queen technical and they emailed me back within the hour and not only told me about the fast and slow agitation but also sent me the manual which lists all agitator speed and time combinations for all cycles. It's not available on their website so when I figure out how to post it here I will do that so everyone can have that info. What great customer service from Speed Queen, no long phone calls to Bangladesh with useless customer service like LG. I actually got Customer Service with Speed Queen!! That did it, I'm going out this morning to buy my top-of-the-line top load and matching dryer.
