Those are the best rescues! They look so good when you first see them and the (almost) religious experience continues by finding the absolutely pristine condition inside, under the panels. Just about the only thing missing is the box it came in. Nice rescue and the nice find award goes to Jeff for locating her!

John--Congratulations on such a prized find. I'm usually good on the Pgh craigslist, this one slipped by or I'd have sold the left one to get it. More pics please, video, all the usual. Congrats and very cool machine. The motor/tranny pump everything looks like a pretty simple design, thank god, easier to restore. You just never know what's in someone's basement when no one moved out of a house in 50+ years! |

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone, I will eventually do some laundry in it but I am currently heavily involved in remodeling the warehouse and museum space, so even with all these cool new finds I have no time to play.
Jon, this GE has the later cast Iron wash basket, it is over 1/2" thick and beautifully machined and coated with porcelain on both sides.
Mark This AW-6 is the basic model, the earlier and original model that Robert has actually has two timers and two electric water pumps a self-cleaning lint filter and the ability not only to pre-soak the laundry and then dispense the main wash detergent and go into the full wash cycle and then save the warm rinse water in the machine for use in the next load of laundry either for pre-soaking or for a main warm wash. My brother Jeff and I rescued the washer Robert now has over 35 years ago and it is about the only one anyone has ever found. It is amazing to me that the original is so rare, although when CRs tested it in 1948 they said it was the best AW yet but expensive at $400. I guess that the price was the main reason that it did not sell well. Interestingly the lady that gave it to us over 35 years ago said her husband bought it for her because he felt guilty because he had just bought a television set for him self LOL.
Thank Goodness that straight men feel guilty some times or Robert might not have this cool washer today, I wounder why he really felt so guilty, LOL. |

So, like the early unimatics, it spun at motor speed? I'm understanding that right? |

This was huge when it happened. These are the first break-down photos linked in the first post. And in the archives, there are flix, eye-popping jaw-droppers of this incredible machine. You know how to Search-o-late. Go for it.

The guy who bought his wife the AW-6 tol (?) was going to dominate the tv - she was in a woman's class all her own with that washer, especially if few women had $400(or more) washers. Either it was bragging rights she was supposed to be enjoyng, or like my dad who dominated the tv, it was something she could do while he vanished into tv-land?
Nice AW-6; looks like it was stored in a time capsule (almost). Congrats and good luck with the renovations. |

Am I understanding correctly that this model had no recirculation pump and no lint filter that was found in the earlier models made in 1947? Is this the reason this model picture is referred to as a basic machine? Recently, on ebay, there were manuals for all of these GE models for sale. |

I've often wondered this about wringer washers with aluminum agitators, too:
Aluminum can leave grey marks on fabrics; drying an aluminum pot with a dishtowel will often result in such marks. They're aluminum oxide rubbing off on the fabric. That leaves me wondering if aluminum agitators do this if one isn't careful. Anyone know? |
