Yesterday I was watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In one of the kitchen scenes, when the aliens first come, there seemed to be a top load roto rack. The lid was bouncing up and down for effect, and low and behold, a circular rack.

So, I guess my question is, did they actually sell one like this? Anyone have one?

Guy

The top rack split apart in the middle and you lifted half of the top rack out to load the bottom.

Most Certainly

The first dishwasher my parents owned was a top load portable Kenmore with the Roto-rack.  Because of it's design, it could never be permanent installation. The top circular rack was divided into two halfs.  Each side of the round rack was able to fold over (one at a time) for loading/unloading of the lower rack.  Many years before the term and concept of "Bob Load", we had been overloading that machine (LOL).   Now I understand what we were doing and the challenges that the dishwasher faced on a daily basis.  Everything always came out clean.  Never required a repair.  I think my dad bought it used for $35.  It was a great dishwasher.  Seems to me they left it when they moved.

I have one of these with the impeller. It has a nozzle in the center back of the tank to provide extra wash power for the top rack and to help it turn, but the original models did not have anything but the impeller in the bottom and still managed to turn the upper rack with just the water force from the impeller. The occasional POD showing the American Kitchens DW with the roto rack only had the impeller.
