Hi all,

Been a while since I posted here. I sold my Hotpoint Ultima WMUD962P & bought a reconditioned Dyson CR02 Allergy in February.

It is immaculate and is a great machine to use. It is very fast, washes & rinses brilliantly and spins with very little fuss.

Unfortunately it no longer contrarotates but still washes well. However I've just been thinking how I might reenable the contrarotation.

As far as I can work out I will need the main control board that goes at the back of the machine.

I've seen a couple on eBay that have been removed from machines and enquired as to whether the machine was still contrarotating when removed.

This may not be worth my while but I may give it a go, I'm also looking for another lg as I really miss my old one.

Videos of the Dyson are on my YouTube page for anyone who's interested.

Darren

Um, does "allergy" mean the same thing in UK it does in US? Here, it means your nose runs or your skin itches. Why would anyone name an appliance that? Oh, right, Dyson is a crackerbarrel.

Just goes to show you how well-informed we (I) are (am) on this side of the Pond. I thought Dyson only made vacuums and hand dryers.
Looks pretty nice too, with all the transparent plastic like the vacuums have. Does that mean it costs four times as much as a regular washer, just like the vacuums do?

I notice how European front loaders all sound different than their North American counterparts. They all have that distinctive hum when they rotate the drum. My Miele and AEG had the same hum.
Is it because of the stronger current in Europe or is it the sound of quality design (EU) versus shoddy construction (US)?

Mum wanted one of these when they first came out. Id be a bit worried about the contrarotation system tangling washing lol
Nevertheless, stillma beautiful washer :-)

It might not be that simple.....

Hey Darren
I have a feeling part of the modification involves locking the 2 drums together- It might be worth asking Jon if he can find out from Jack??

The dyson engineer came to replace the planet carrier assembly and motors a good 5 years or so ago. He changed the module at the back of the machine and since that day no washing programmes contrarotated. However if you use the diagnostic mode (service wash) which the engineer also did, it still does one contrarotation in it's process. The drums did not get locked.

We used the washing machine a few years after the module was replcaed until it started playing up.

On the whole it gave an amazing wash performance however you can't fill the drum as you have been doing as the 2 drums action needs room for the clothes to move around (hence dyson rated it at 7kg (78litre drum volume which in today's terms will equate to 12kg of laundry!)

From what I know, it is only the module that resides at the back of the machine that would need replacing. If anyone has more information feel free to give advice to Darren :)

So, the hardware is still able to do bi-directional washing, but the software stops it? That's interesting.

Allergy is the name of the machine because it has a allergy foundation approved duvet cycle and you can add up to 5 rinses to a cycle, so is allergy friendly.

Seamus as far as I'm aware the drums aren't locked. I'm gonna try the diagnostic mode later to see if it still contrarotates on that.

I've found a company that will revert my software if I send the control board off but I've also found a couple on eBay that I might just buy for quickness.

I had a Cr02 for a few months after I picked one up on ebay, it was a great machine. Only had Dyson out once to replace both motors, this machine has two of course not one like standard machines. I always enjoyed the contrarotation and the weird noise it made. A very interesting machine indeed and it's a pity they stopped making them it would have been nice to see them evolve like the vacuum cleaners.

Hi Steve,

The only time i've seen the contrarotation in person is when I used to work in the Co-op & we had a demo models with towels in, needless to say I was constantly activating it lol.

I'm hoping that putting it through diagnostic model will confirm if it will contrarotate still and then I will buy a module off ebay or send mine off to the company that are offering to do it for me.

We have one of these, CR01 and we are about to give it the boot. It's been leaking and had a burning smell coming from it and I have been given the diagnosis of the brushes or motor and gunk in the internal pipe. But we're ready for a change, had these machines for 12 years now, through two machines and we will take in a local relatives lovely perfectly working Hotpoint WM34 for the time being. These machines may now be a gem to own, but they can be a heck of a problem to look after and repair.

Unfortunately it won't be contrarotating again :-( after some advice from a repairman in the know and following his instruction with the back off it has either seized or has been locked.

Dammit!

aaaah thats a shame! Still a fantastic machine Darren

As it's been programmed not to contrarotate... have the cycles been re-programmed to take longer?

I only ask as the A-Class wash was only 69 minutes due to the wash action. Since it's not doing that now I wondered if there had been any programming changes to compensate.

l86810: The wash times are the same but the saving grace is the soil level selection if a long wash is needed. The cottons tumbles distribute and then slow down all and are pretty effective but I think they were the tumbles before the contrarotation anyway.

I do really like it but really miss my lg. I'm conflicted.

Darren, this is true by the way:

In later years when the CR01 and 02 were serviced, if the contrarotating gear box was damaged, they were replaced by a new gearbox that only rotated the drum as a complete unit (due to no more stock of the CR gearboxes) - so that's why your one will never contrarotate again, unless you replaced the gearbox with a CR one somehow.
