Hello guys:

My name is Tom and I am new to the forum. I've been a member over at vacuumland for about three years and used to read up on some of the messages over here on automaticwasher.org. I was at Robert and Fred's house in Minneapolis at the 2011 Vacuum Cleaner convention and was amazed at all the nice machines Robert had. I've always had an interest for vintage things, I've restored about five old Kirby vacuums, took them apart completely, changed bearings, replaced broken switches, new wiring, etc... On the washer/dryer side, I've changed belts, drum rollers, pulleys and an electric heating element. Reason for explaining this is I'm on the hunt now for a vintage washer/dryer either in working or non working order since I don't have any currently. By vintage I would like to find a Kenmore from the 1960's or early 70's, an electric dryer, and a belt driven washer. And I think with all the experts on this forum you could give me some good advice on how to repair them (I'm sure I will need that!!). I've been looking for over a year now in my area (Long Island, NY) but haven't come across anything. If anybody has a Kenmore machine they would like to sell, let me know, I may be interested. I would just have to arrange for shipping. My email address is in my profile. Thanks and Happy Washing !!!! and vacuuming too!!!

P.S. When was the blower housing on the kenmore dryers moved from the top right rear to the bottom rear center of the machine? The dryer we had when I was a kid (a 1960 model) had it near the top right rear of the machine, so it had a shorter lint screen. Was the reason for moving it to the bottom to eliminate an extra belt and pulley? I always liked it better with the smaller lint screen at the top, it was less cumbersome.

Hi Tom!!

Well first, WELCOME TO AW.org, and thanks for posting.

If you can handle shipping from Charlotte and do your own clean-up, etc, I've got several machines in mind which could get you started. I have several late 1960s Kenmores that would appreciate being in your collection.

I don't have much if any time right now to offer to refurb the machines before they ship, but if you'd like to do that yourself, contact me either on-site by e-mail or at my hotmail address and I'll tell you about what I have.

In the meantime, the upper-cabinet blowers/short filters models were made until some point between late 1965 and 1966, though I don't know the exact conversion timing. These had belt-driven blowers, and the new style has a blower wheel mounted directly to the motor shaft at the base of the dryer. We call these "belt-drive blower" models and "direct drive blower" models. Some models which started out as belt-drive blower models were converted to the newer design, including the 1965 Kenmore 800 dryers.

Again, welcome!

Gordon

The bridge tolls are highway robbery these days but I suggest venturing west of the Hudson river, the pickins' are slim for vintage machines on L.I. for some reason.

Welcome!

Glad that you've decided to become a bit of a vintage washer connoisseur. And welcome to the forums! As you can probably tell already, you are most welcome here - as can be seen by the welcoming posts made by others, just like they did when I joined this time last year :-)

Won't be long and you'll be joining in the best aspects of being a member, such as "Bob-Loading" threads, Wash-Ins or even doing your own laundry with your vintage set, detailing it here!

Good luck with pursuing your "dream machines." Remember to keep an eye out on the threads where people post Craiglist and eBay listings, as this can be a godsend for those looking for their machines or parts.
