I have a Kenmore 90 Series Washer. I have noticed the agitator does not swish back and forth as older washers did. It only moves in a clockwise fashion. Are there any new model washers that still have the old fashion back and forth action like the old Maytags and Kelvinators?

Back and Forth!

Hi Tim! You can't see it, but the agitator is going back and forth. What you're looking at is the auger that helps pull the clothes down to the fins of the agitator. If you fill the machine on the small load setting and put your hand down on the agitator you will discover that indeed it IS going back and forth....just looks deceptive! Mark

Hi Tim,
It seems now only a few brands bottom-of-the-line machines have them- GE and Whirlpool/Roper are the ones I've seen. Admiral machines as well. I'm not very keen on these new fast action agitators with the auger. I like the gentleness of the old Maytags.

I have to admit, first time I saw the auger (on a machine at a friend's house 15 years ago, can't recall anything else about it except the cabinet was green), I thought, "darn!, that's clever!" because it would help pull blue jeans down at the center of the load. Blue jeans having a tendency otherwise to stay at the surface and move around more slowly than other items.

My mom has a new-ish Maytag with the auger agitator; when I go back to visit my folks during the holidays, I usually end up washing my stuff, and so far that machine seems to do just fine.

The criticism about these possibly being a bit rough on clothes (and the faster agitators) could be addressed by using the Gentle setting and, if needed, a longer wash time setting .

I have the Kenmore 90 series washer. The auger is great when washing sheets as these have a tendency to get air bubbles in them. The auger handles sheets in stride.

Getting back on the subject of speeds, my machine has 5 wash/spin speed combinations. I find that i use the normal speed (slow/fast) for most things and the turnover is quite adequate. I use the Heavy Duty speed ( fast/fast) for heavier fabrics like blue jeans and fuller loads.

It took a little adjusting to know which speeds work best. Over all i find these TOL KM/WP washers to be pretty darn flexible.

....one minute per pound!!!!

if thats the case.... My AEG takes a whopping 75 pounds of whites on the normal programme!!!!!
And before anyone corrects me.... i know, i was just being facecious!

But can anyone tell me please......
Why are the F/L programme times so vcery long over here? If I choose a short programme for say whites with stains.... even my AEG doesnt deliver!

Anyone give me any thoughts?

Peter
