Hard to find all that much new below the control panel. Yes, it has a Permanent Press cycle, but the agitator is the old Gyrator, not the Power Fin even if it now has a non-matching lint filter. If you compare it to the other New Generation machines, this one still has the old transmission with the slower agitation strokes per minute.

Permanent Press Cycle

tom, look again. this is the first generation of the new generation of dependable maytags--same as with the A606 and the new larger tub. This series didn't have a permanent press cycle and the dryer still referred to it as a wash 'n' wear cycle.

The A106 from January 1966 until October of 1967 was basically the same machine as the A302 Highlander. In November of 1967 is when the the A106 & A206 got the faster-geared transmission and the all turquoise Power-Fin agitator. The actual Permanent press cycle with cool down would wait until February of 1969 (except on the A906 which along with its predecessors had a true cool down since 1959, even though it was called "Wash-n-Wear" on these until 1969.)

The dryer did have both a regular and a Wash-n-Wear cycle. The only real difference between these was the cool-down period. The cool-down on regular was specced at 2-3 minutes and on Wash-n-Wear it was 5-8 minutes. This dryer design would remain basically unchanged from January 1966 until the end of production in the summer of 1976. All revisions were basically cosmetic. In 1969 Wash-n-Wear became Permanent Press, around 1972 the white plastic knob became acrylic and in 1975 the panel got the "Sun-glo gold" trim.

Sorry about the perma press cycle, Bob. I was confused by the markings, but Mark is correct about the agitation speeds. With the original design black lint filter agitator, the agitation was slower and this was not like the larger tub machines with the faster agitation and the power fin agitator. Once again, if you bought BOL, Maytag deprived you of basic features.

The Basic Maytag--as long as it's a MAYTAG!--in my mom&#

The dryer seems to be touted in the ad as "automatic" yet this has a timer only & what would have been a better companion for the Maytag washer my mom had, similar to the A 106, 'cept for having an all-blue agitator & tub, as well as a Permanent Press albeit an all-white timer dial...

My mom's dryer w/ the "metal-look timer dial", complete w/ Reg. & Perm. Press settings as well as the Reg. & Low Temp push buttons, was a bit of a step-up...

When they have to TELL you they're dependable, you can see the beginning of the end.

Powerfins on A106 and A206

Did the A106 always have the turquoise Powerfin after those agitators debuted? The A206 had a black one with the aqua filter, so I would assume the same was true for that model as well. I did see a video of a 106 on Youtube with a turq agi, but it was a later version.
