Specifically, the "mechanical guts" of the plain top-load washers and matching dryers.

I've read that the redesign dates back to the 90's, but can someone nail down the date a bit more?

Current SQ TL Washer and Dryers

Early 1980s, there have been some changes and improvements. The Front Load washer has only been around around 15 years, but is really the best SQ washer to buy, the TL machines while very good are only good by default, we never took this design seriously until WP stopped making their DD washer in regular models.

Not sure about the residential models, but the commercial ones changed in late 1997. During this time they changed from a 2 belt system to a 1 belt system with what is termed and "upside down" pump. So I would guess the residential models are the same since then as well.
