Hello,

I have a Kitchenaid Varicycle KDA-5 top-loading dishwasher that has power to the timer, but not beyond. Appliance repairman suspects it needs a new timer but says he can't get parts. Does anyone know where I might get a new timer, or if the old timer could be repaired?

It is also missing the back cover . . .

i have a timer assembly for a kds-15

I have no way of testing it, but if that timer will fit your machine (the kds-15 is the front load version of your portable) we can figure out a way to get it to you.

Maybe someone else can chime in and let's us know if it is a suitable replacement.

The KDA-5 timer is very different from the KDS-15 timer. If you can let us know the part number on the timer, some of us can check out parts stash (me included).

Thanks Ben

I knew the possibility of them being interchangeable was a long shot, but thought I would try anyway.

Thanks Ben and William637.

The dishwasher does not have a model # (may have been on the back cover which is missing), and the old timer does not have a part number on it. Have ID'd my dishwasher as a KDA-5 based on the identical one in the picture (below) that was posted online by revvinkevin.

Will attach a picture of the timer from the KDA-5 service manual to the next post.

Part number for timer?

The timer unit (below) pictured in the KDA-5 service manual has the number PL5990 on it . . . would that be the part number or just an image number?

Sorry, not the part number . . .

After reading the service manual, I see that that is not the part number :(. No part numbers are given.

Wiring Diagram

Before you go on your trek for a new timer, check the wiring diagram to make sure there isn't an interlock switch for the door or another interlock that would prevent the power from continuing past the timer. Also, check for any broken wires going to the program switch on the top of the machine. I take it that none of the cytcles work when the buttons are pressed?
Maybe with the lid opening and closing, the harness may have a broken wire in it and that is your problem. It sure sounds like it could be a wiring problem so you may want to check there first.

BTW, all the "PL" numbers in Hobart parts and service manuals refer to the photographic plate that represents what you see on the page. I am sure someone here will have an actual parts manual for your machine. Also, check with Toploader55, Eddie, and send him a pic of your machine as I believe he had a 5 varicycle machine too. That way you will be closer to a match.

The part number, as already mentioned, should be on your timer so you can see if anyone has one.

Update

Stevet, you were correct :), the problem is the interlock switch on the door (top-loading lid). Would anyone out there know where I could get a replacement interlock switch or the back covers (2 pieces) which are missing? Otherwise the dishwasher seems to work fine :)!

Would you have a picture of it or a part number? I don't have a parts manual for that machine but may be able to supply the part or see if it is still available.
Steve

Thanks for responding! The dishwasher is at a repair shop . . . will try to get the part number tomorrow or Tuesday and get back to you.

Non Running KA TL Portable DW

combo52's profile picture

Hi Susan it sounds like you are in good hands now, by far the biggest problem with this DW was broken wires going through the lid hinges. I bypassed the complete circuit through the lid switch years ago on my KA TL portable DW, which solves the problem of broken wires forever as long as you remember to unplug the DW if it is running and you want to open the lid, otherwise if you do open the lid while the DW is running you will not believe how fast you will get WET and when you are done drying every surface in your kitchen you will have a really clean kitchen including the ceiling, LOL.

Thanks to all

for the assistance and humor . . . predictably, the appliance repair shop had an interlock switch that would work sitting right on their shelf (!), so the dishwasher is finally working and the hurricane should stay in the box. Still looking for a back cover . . . any suggestions?

Need a picture of the back of a KDA-5

Would anyone be willing to load a picture of the back covers (on and/or off) of a KDA-5 top loading dishwasher?
