Can Metro Shelving Make A Dryer Stand? |

Ok now that the AEG set has arrived need to get moving on finding a way to stack the Whirlpool compact so can shove the AEG condenser under to save space.
The white metal Whirlpool/Sears stand seem to be the only one out there that is free standing. Avanti sells one for their compact dryer but it must be bolted into wall. Then glancing over towards the kitchen it dawned on me; wonder if it is possible to create a custom dryer "rack" using Metro Wire Shelves? The things are rated to hold 500lbs and are much more attractive than the white WP unit. Thoughts and or suggestions? CLICK HERE TO GO TO Launderess's LINK | ||

this could probably work....after all, if it can hold and aquarium with water, it could hold a portable dryer.....a variety of sizes, you may even find a 24x24 inch size....
some pointers.....you may still want to have it bolted to the wall to prevent tipping, and find a way to attach the dryer to it as well, one doesn't want to pull on the door and find it toppled over on one's self...... and keep in mind of the desk unit pictured, as using a base frame at least around three sides to keep it sturdy... theres a lot of nice optional stuff for these shelves....leveling legs for one | ||

I used one of the 14 x 36 units to hold a full size micro on the second shelf, a full set of dishes for eight on the third and a KitchenAid mixer and bread machine on the bottom shelf, topped it all off with glasses. Used it for at least 10 years, with no issues. They are very sturdy, should hold a dryer just fine.

Why not do one of two things:
- purchase the correct frame or a dryer mat and stack the AEG on one another as they were designed to be and place the Whirlpool next to it... or - place the AEG next to each other and stack the Whirlpool on top with either a rubber mat or MDF cut to size and painted white? Martin makes a very good point
I use something similar to hold my mixers, with two keymatics under and in spite of there being three shelves in the arrangement it is still a bit wobbly (the shelves are about 900mm above the ground - this type of units really need the shelves evenly spaced to make them rigid. That is not practical in this case so you do need those hanging rails around the bottom to make it rigid.
They are not very deep, check out catering racking (especially on ebay) which, in this country at least comes in 300, 400, 500 & 600mm depth - you can even get them with wheels on which might make cleaning easier. This might also be a help with the height as normally the poles here come with a max height of 1800mm and you really need a shelf at the top as well for rigidity so you might be hard pressed to fit two machines in within the height. Still on the catering side, while stainless steel benches normally come with a shelf under, sometimes they don't (to accommodate fridges, dishwashers etc.) so it might be worth taking a look on ebay and craigslist as there might just be something to fit the bill Al | ||

Are you planning on using two 14" deep shelving units, placed one in front of the other to get enough depth?
I have similar shelving in my basement, and it is sturdy. I am not sure how you are thinking you may use it, but you have to think about bracing. The legs are really just poles that are held in place by the shelves. All the examples I have seen have at least on shelf near the bottom, and one near the top, which will keep the legs in place. If you intend to use this type of shelving with only a "shelf" on top, similar to a table, it wouldn't work. It will be wobbly. If you are planning on standing it over a washer sitting on the floor, you would need to get a tall unit, with a shelf in place about half way up for the stacked dryer, and another shelf in place on top of the dryer, to keep the legs braced. If you are planning on creating two shelves, one near the floor for a bottom dryer, and another above it for another dryer, I believe it would work okay. | ||

Actually have a InterMetro shelf set that is currently packed up and stored for lack of space. Now that it was mentioned remember when assembling the thing how unstable it was until all three shelves were in place. Even then there was a slight wobble. Mind you was fine for several heavy mixers and other kitchen equipment, but would now (correctly) be cautious of using one with just one shelf and open below.
@ronhic: Mentioned in another thread about the AEG "problems". The washer needed to go in an area off the kitchen to be close to water and sink. Was able to fit the AEG unit in after selling on the previous washer (Whirlpool compact/portable)and swapped out the space. Between the two washers (AEG and Miele) along with the portable dishwasher there simply isn't any more room. Moving the DW won't help as the AEG dryer is much larger than the 18" portable, indeed it is larger than the Whirlpool compact dryer. Cannot stack as there is shelving above the nook where washers are located. Personally am not a huge fan of stacking dryers on top of front loaders. For one thing it means jobs one can normally do on one's own such as shifting the washer to clean or fetch something that has fallen behind more difficult. Absent finding one of those vintage heavy stands Hoover, Maytag and others sold for their portable units there is only one option left; call in someone to construct something stable that will support the WP dryer and yet leave space below for storage of the AEG. On another note plugged in and tested the AEG dryer last night. Everything seems to work, but only used it on "Air/Cool" setting. Quite allot of link and bits of white flakes/powder was blown around the drum. One assumes this is lint and god only knows what from previous use; a quick vacuuming out solved the problem. | ||

That is a really nice set up you've got there!
We have an excellent custom cabinet/craft company here in NYC that does this sort of thing which as you can imagine in often space challenged apartments comes in handy. However they tend to be pricey. OTHO they do excellent custom cabinets, Murphy bed sets, beds, etc.... Would love to have something done along what you've got but maybe even a tad higher with another shelf above for storage. In trawling the web for W&D stacking ideas have seen quite a few custom jobs like yours and the one I posted. Many great minds think a like and for various reasons don't want their dryer stacked directly on top of their washer. | ||
