Been noticing 'pilling' on my cotton/knit shirts last couple of washes using our TOL tl SQ's installed 8/14/12.

Tonight my 2 1/2 month old, smooth cotton work shirts looked worse than I've seen them. Investigation leads me to believe a build-up of burnt-on 'dryer sheet' softener on the dryer's heat inlet grill is much of the problem.

Burnt, sharp edged crust that is smooth going with tumble flow, but rough going opposite direction.

I took off the grill and have it soaking in bleach water. SOS pad took some off,but I thought I'd try this. Other ideas?

I'll buy a new grill if I can't get this one clean and smooth. I GUESS this is the cause of most of my 'pilling'. Other ideas on pilling?

Anyway,I THINK the dryer sheets are what caused the burnt crust. If you guys concur,I'll tell my wife NO MORE dryer sheets. I use only a little Purex liquid softener.I've heard sheets can hurt the thermostat, though our 16 year old KM 90 never showed disdain for the sheets... Bill

I would try turning the shirts inside out before washing. I hope you are using the Delicate cycle and not washing any other more sturdily constructed garments with them. The washing time in the newer SQs is quite long for lightly soiled items and with that large tub, the drop during the tumble and the low water level makes for a washing action that is quite vigorous.

The reason I would be less concerned with the surface of the heat inlet grill is that there should be a strong enough stream of air coming through it to blow items away. It is the exhaust grill leading to the lint filter that has the tendency to pull items toward it and if that were roughed up, it could cause pilling.

I've not notice pilling on my garments, but I have found many instances of black marks on whites.  I know it's not the washer because the marks have appeared on items that I've washed in the Filter-flo.  Makes me wonder if the clothes are getting caught between the drum and the back, along the seal?  I can't figure out what else might be happening.  They look like your typical grease marks from the washer.

Any suggestions?

GE and Hotpoint filter flos

Tend to leak transmission oil into the clothes when the upper transmission seal (if that's what its called) is going bad.

These grease-marks (for lack of anything better to call them) appear regardless of which washer I use.  They have appeared on t-shirts that were washed in my SQ.  The dryer is the source, not either of the washers.

I had the marks appear on some clothes once. I had an older Maytag dryer at the time and it was coming from the front, clothes were getting caught were the drum turned at the front of the dryer. Left a brownish black mark.
