Hi guys,

I finally got round to dry testing out the pristine Hotpoint 9540 minus a door today (I borrowed the door off the matching 9330 dryer which I picked up today), however it has one issue where it will not advance through the cycle - I set it to a spin, and after 5 minutes of distributing I turned it off as it was obvious the timer wasn't advancing itself.  I set it to the last portion of the spin cycle (where it clicks on to do the fast spin), and it spun for however long I would leave it rather than the 3 minutes before advancing to the off stage.  I tested it out on the short spin, and the interim spin before the final rinse and the timer still won't advance.

My question is, is this an issue with the timer itself or is there anything else worth investigating first before I spend £100 on a new timer?

Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon,

Two lovely machines! I am 75% sure that the timer motor is either seized or dead. If you can manage to fill it with water you will find out for sure because once it is filled you should hear the timer motor kick in, if it does then the actual timer is the problem, if it doesn't you have a dead timer motor. Worth noting too that there is a solenoid on the back of the timer that stops the timer motor for the heating phase, this may be seized?

James.

Hi James,

I shall check it out tomorrow when I have a bit more patience - it was starting to get late anyway by the time I had switched the doors over to dry test the 9540.  I will report back with my findings, but my general suspicion is that it's the timer as you don't hear it tick either :/.  However it might even be a loose connection yet as I haven't opened the lid to look, so we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Jon

If it's stuck, would it be worth trying out WD40?  If so where would be the best place to lubricate it?

Sorry for all the questions, just really keen to get this set working!

All fixed! The timer motor had just come loose in transit - simply clipped it back in and it works like a charm!

well done Jon

great example you have. Grandma replace the english electric with the 9530, the 1000 plus version, that was in 1986 and was the first time I'd seen a machine spin faster than 800, can you imagine lol. Such a deprived upbringing.

Don't use WD40

Using WD40 is a not good. Some of the older Hot points ( my top loader) Uses nylon cogs inside and the WD40 dose bad things to them. The engineer who came to fix it said to use silicone lubricant instead.
