Can anyone tell me if this Speed Queen washer is Alliance built? One or two speed, capacity?
Also, does this model need adjustments to get full water levels?

Seller claims it to be 5-6 years old:

Thanks..

Absolutely Alliance-built. It's the AWS series, same as our main driver. Circa 2006-07. It's the last SQ line with a warm water rinse option. And a majorly good deal at $150 imo.

These have slightly lower default water levels than the previous series, but higher than the following one. :) We wound up adjusting ours slightly, about an inch, to the top row of holes in the basket. This one looks to be an AWS52 or 53, 2-speed but no fabric selector knob (which is just a manual hi/lo speed switch for agitation and spin). The 53 has ATC (nasty "automatic water temp control", simply a narrowed hot water inlet in the valve) while the 52 doesn't, but the front panels are identical:

I believe all SQ from Alliance were 3.3 cu ft.....one size fit all....some stainless and some were porcelain interiors

Coin-ops

I think the coin-ops with the smaller lid opening are a smaller capacity tub. They take the smaller non-flex agitator. Although without a side by side, I could be wrong...

Okay, I'll contact the seller tomorrow.

I was looking for a Whirlpool built DD washer to replace a friend's leaking POS Kenmore Front Loader, but now I'm leaning toward a long stroke Speed Queen.

the smaller lid opening fell under the "Raytheon" built machines thru the 80's...I think their capacity was around 2.7-2.9 cu ft

Douglas, if the inside of the washer looks as good as the outside, your friend should be happy with it.

The top surface of that washer is so shiny it almost seems like it could be porcelain enamel.  Our Raytheon Amana's top was painted and it looked cheap.

Looks like there's a matching dryer in one of the photos.  I wonder why it isn't for sale too.

while this is a sturdy SQ....I have to go along with Ralph....most of the times when they are just selling the washer alone, without the dryer, there is an issue with the washer....not always, just saying...buyer beware....

sometimes they will sell just the washer if they wanted to upgrade the washer, because its old, and the dryer is newer....but this appears to be a newer set, and matching....curious as to why?....raises my suspicions!

Selling Just The Washer?

combo52's profile picture

Yes I always try to figure out why someone is selling something, especially if they say it is working great. Try to find out what they are replacing it with, very likely they are getting a Hi Efficiency TL washer or a FL washer to gain efficiency and better cleaning and water extraction.

I spoke to the seller, nice lady.

Without asking she said the matching SQ dryer died so they purchased a new set.

Hopefully, I can get down there tomorrow to check it out. I'll get more details about the dryer and what replaced it.

My SQ dryer

Died not long after it was delivered. Turned out to be a broken wire in the wiring harness.

Gotta love how quickly the conversation went from "Uh-oh, check the washer" to "Wow, maybe the dryer can be fixed" lol

Only on AW. :)

....heres another one, and located in NJ.....

but another question, if you were looking for a DD machine, why put out the extra expense of travel and tolls when there are so many used appliance shops up there in the Northern part?...most in your backyard, for a similar price you can get delivery, install and removal, and a warranty!...

GET THEM BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who cares if the dryer doesn't work.....How could they be putting these machiens out to pasture already? The washer has a ten year waarnaty on the motor...and brand new costs over 700 dollars! The dryer probably has a clogged vent, and doesn't work because of stupidity!!!! These machines are made to last a long time, if they are the original owners, they should have known this, but they are gonna regret givng up these workhorses for any new piece of crap on the market today!!! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR STUPIDITY!!

Get Them Both

I agree for this price these are a good deal. The washers motor actually only had a 5 year warranty, but a ten year warranty on the transmission.

With Consumer Reports strongly suggesting not repairing a TL washer after 3-5 years and a dryer after 5-8 years one can see why so many machines are being replaced early, even new WP and MT washers and dryers are more reliable than anytime in the history of automatic washers and dryers and just like buying a new car today a new washer or dryer today will likely last longer than the one it replaced.

Sorry

Five on the motor, ten on the tranny! Either way how could you go wrong!

Post# 703618 , Reply# 18   9/16/2013 at 21:39 (3,871 days old) by DigAPony ()

Okay, I picked up the washer today, paid $100. I wanted to offer $80 but they were nice people, I was tired, and the washer was in good condition.

The dryer was gone. Supposedly the motor failed and the repair estimate was $300. The husband wanted to have it fixed but the wife said no. At the repairman's suggestion they got new a Whirlpool Cabrio set, he advised them not to get Front Loaders.

Now, how do I increase the Speed Queen water level control?

I cannot see a motor costing 300, I think you can make the repair yourself.

Remove the three screws holding the control panel to the top, find the pressure switch behind the water level dial. The screw going into the middle of the switch is the adjustment screw: turn it 1/4 turn clockwise for every additional inch of desired water height.

The above is from memory, if any of it is wrong someone please chime in.

300.00 is not just for the motor.....labor included!......most new motors run about 100.00, give or take...

Cost Of Replacing A Dryer Motor

combo52's profile picture

The retail cost of a new dryer motor runs anywhere from $130-over $200 for the motor alone, so $300 total is probably about average for the complete job.

Okay, I removed the front panel on the washer, everything looks good except some black dust from belt wear.

Should the belt be replaced now or wait until it becomes an issue?

Just a thought, but you  might still find the matching dryer lurking around behind a Lowes...

Our Lowes & HD stores have a 15 foot high chain link fence around the back storage area and a top cover of the area also made of chain link. No getting inside there for anything. I know, I've looked!

Update on the SQ:

I ran it through a cycle today, water level filled nicely to the top row of holes, no adjustment needed there. Very quiet machine, my Maytag A712 has more powerful hum, but in a good way.

Last thing before handing over the keys to the new owner is to check the inlet valve for the restriction on the hot side..
