I want to clean the agitator on my new/used Speed Queen AWS52, there is some black gunk inside the barrel, old fabric softener residue I suppose.

Anyway, how does the agitator come off? I tried pulling straight up but it will not budge.

Ummmm nope ...fill the tub with hot water and let it sit for a bit, rock the tub to get the air bubble out from under the agitator to let the hot water under it. I would say let it sit for 10 mins and then drain the washer. Once drained, stop the washer and reach in and rock the base of the agitator upwards. It should come up. It will take some effort though.

Or use the famous "Turban of Terror!" to remove the agitator.

I have also heard of people putting a deflated bicycle inner tube under the agitator and just pumping it up could pop the agitator too.

I got the agitator off okay, just hit it with extra muscle and some rocking.

Thanks.

Best advice, but you would need something to help. I always used a belt/strap to wrap around the bottom of the agitator; much easier than trying to lift the bottom of the agitator by hand.
