Well, uhhhh, I don't know really where to start, and I'm a little bit Bourbon buzzed in celebration, but a saint came unto me today. His name is Big Al of Utah. We just made friends about a week and a half ago; he doesn't post much, but he's got a doozie on the way, a movie about his secret collection, he also loves Combos, and had two WP's that got lost in his move from Long Island to Utah.

Ten days or so ago, I got an email that opened my eyes in revelation and lifted my heart. Al offered me his Whirlpool Supreme 80 Top Loading Dishwasher. He remembered that I had asked him when he posted about finding two top loaders, the 80 and the lighting TOL, that if he ever wanted to sell the Imperial 80, please let me know. The big dial, bending to load rather than stooping, the Super Wash, portability (for me portable DW's are always the wringer washer equivalent, which I like so much, etc.) That's what got me interested.

Having the bigger picture, Al had offered the machine to John for the Museum, but John declined; hence his offer to me, and I died in disbelief. Then we had a few conversations, and I was delighted to befriend another bright, friendly, articulate man of Aworg. Is there no end to them?

Long story longer for the lovers of reading and stories here, I called You Crate right away as per Al's recommendation. They were amazing, picking up the machine on Friday, and delivering 5 days business later, which was today. April and Mary who answer the phones were fabulous.

In the conversations with Al, who works at Habitat, he said he really needed to move another machine, another Custom Imperial Whirlpool Portable DW. So I called April and asked about a deal, two "cubes" as they call one of their delivery options, (the other being the "Tower"), but she said the price would double for two cubes less a hundred dollar discount. Too much money, too far over the edge, I wanted to help Al make room in his home, with all the Habitat finds he wants to save from the crusher, but I kept my sanity. Ever hopeful nevertheless, I did call April back to give her the good news about the second dishwasher and ask if it would be safe and possible to piggyback them. Alas, through her polite giggle, she declined the likelihood.

Today, at 2:30, the big white and green semi pulled up and here comes the cube. Now, I wanted to be like my friend Ben, and put up a picture and have fun letting people guess what got delivered, but I lack his discipline, so here's the inside of the cube. And now behold the Imperial 80.

Inside the wooden cube,

It smelled all warm summery and new woody, and I wanted to stay, but one can't stay boxed for long without drawing a crowd.

But what is this other covered item? This is not possible? He didn't really do this and not let on? He didn't give a new friend another free gift that was never expected, not even hoped for. Are you serious? You must be kidding. Is this for real ? Can I marry you?

HE DID IT.......

mickeyd's profile picture
Had to tear most of the cardboard away to see what it was. So overcome with gratitude and shock that Big Al pulled this off, giving me a world class surprise and saving me a fortune. I mmediately called and told him I wanted to send him some money, but he graciously declined, so I asked for the Habitat address to send a Christmas present, and he told me to donate to my local habitat. He did ask, however, that if I tire of the rare toploader, Would I KINDLY DONATE IT TO JOHN'S MUSEUM. And I said, absolutely. Overcome, I dove into the lake, swam like fiend, and had a Bourbon & soda to compose myself.

Just look at this gorgeous machine and how enormous the dial. What did I ever do to deserve this?

Al is a great DW lover

and now I've been bitten by the DW bug. The washing machine-like dial was the crossover event for me.

Put the Top Loading Imperial 80 through its paces

mickeyd's profile picture
And was impressed at its agility, especially loading and how well-engineered and almost pneumatic the lid is, not at all what I expected. More on the whole operation and its surprises tomorrow. I see God in Big Al. It's late and I'm both wiped and whipped, but I CAN'T identify the structure on the right of the back wall. What is it?

Nice portables! You will have lots of fun playing with these.

And really, it is not an extravagance to have an extra dishwasher, or two or three... you are just being practical. If one goes on the fritz, you have a backup, ready to go.

I have a similar WP top load dishwasher at my shop. It's used as a microwave cart.

Yeah Kenny, it makes a great shelf. Much lower than the standard portable, it's only 33 & 1/2 inches high while the other WP's here are 36 & 1/2 .
Don't throw yours out in case I ever need to buy parts. Wonder if it's so low so no one falls in.

What I most like so far is the ease of loading. You just drop stuff right in. I always fought loading the microwave plate, but not any more. This TL takes it like a breeze.

Gorgeous machines!! Wonderful story. I imagine the structure on the right side of the back of the tub is the water inlet/anti-siphon structure. I LOVE top-loading dishwashers for the reasons you are experiencing. As I've said many times, having a second or third dishwasher is wonderfully useful for washing tools, really dirty disgusting household things like trashcans and toilet plungers and vintage appliance parts.

There weren't many Whirlpool dishwashers in my youth so it's a pleasure to discover them now. I really like some of the unique features on 'pools, like door-mounted silverware baskets and my favorite: extremely and effectively angled supports in upper racks designed to drain the little pools of hot water that manage to remain on washed glasses and cups. Very smart.

Inlet, huh ! Thanks, Ken

I was thinking of you, remembering the very things you mention in your post, when I loaded a giant kettle and the large frying pan & lid. No struggle. No fussing. And if you have something really big like the kitchen garbage pail, the upper arm pops off easily, allowing you to place the object directly over the big water hole that powers the upper arm.
