i have a barely used 1972 ge convertible pot-scrubber. i was told years ago by the original owner it was a pos and leaked from the day it was new, well i finally got it and yes it leaks, luckily its just that it leaks water out the drain hose during the wash. I decided after 4 months of using this machine I'd try and fix it so I ordered the drain washer and flipped her over and yanked the pump. but now I'm left with the question how do i change the washer? the old one is missing ( probably was never there) and i have no idea how to get a new one in. also are these washers known for leaving water in the sump? or does that have to do with the drain flapper as well?

Ge Dishwasher

Water in sump is normal, the dishwasher pump needs water to pump water out , it should not leave water any higher than the top of the sump cover.
As far as the drain shaft goes I don’t think you can buy parts for it any more except the drain seal as you know. I think you would have a tough time putting the shaft back on .most of the time ounce you pull the shaft; it is too loose when you try to put it back together.
The drain shaft seal goes on after you put the shaft back on. it goes in-between the pump body and drain solenoid bracket , on older pumps there is a stainless steel washer and a metal C CLIP THAT KEEPS The drain shaft seal in position on newer models there is a NON reusable washer clip and must be replace when replacing the seal. You do not need to take the motor off the dishwasher to replace the seal , I have replace over a 100 off them in the last 27 years.
If you need another pump body I have plenty
The rust on the door could be the death of the dishwasher
Thanks
Stephen

GE DW With Bad Drain Valve Seal

You need a complete pump body, better yet buy a complete new style pump and motor, but the DW is probably not worth the investment.

We like Stephen have lots of good used pump bodies laying around, if you want one I can send you one for about $20.

John.
