Some friends of mine are renovating their kitchen soon and will need a new dishwasher (and fridge, stove, microwave..)

Any recommendations for a reliable, good performing but not too expensive D/W?

I would say

...Bosch,

Their dw are very reliable and frugal on water and electricity, but you still get good results, we have a Siemens and it has never given us any problems.

Just don't do LG they are extremely poorly made with years of problems.

Cheers

I love my Bosch. It is quiet, is economical (uses little water, detergent), and produces great results. Bosch comes in many price points, and even though the cheaper models have less flexible racks and fewer cycles and options, they still get high marks for cleaning. So they should be able to find a model that fits their price point.

Hi Joe. What model do you have?

I am looking at the new ones that just came out this year. The 800 series with the thrid rack.

How are these machines on drying?

I don't have my model number with me, but the one I have is 8 years old, so things have changed since then. Bosch recently redesigned their dishwashers, resulting in a larger top rack, more models with a 3rd rack, new wash system and different options. I think the new controls are more flexible, with options like "extra shine" which increases the final rinse temperature. Bosch dishwashers continually are highly rated by Consumer Reports.

The model I currently have only has 4 cycles - Power Scrub, Regular, Quick, and Rinse. The only option I have is to increase the final rinse temperature via programming (not a button on the display). The one option I would like to have is the half-load option, as I think that would make me feel less guilty when running a load that isn't full, such as when I make something that will smell if it sits in the dishwasher too long unwashed. Sometimes I can go several days to accumulate a full load. The nice thing is that I don't have to rinse the dishes, and even if the dirt is dried and caked on, the regular wash cycles gets everything clean. I remember being concerned that the bottom rack's tines seemed too close together, but even though plates seem to be packed into the machine too closely, they are always clean.

The condensation drying isn't bad, but it is not the same as old school forced heat drying. I do have water in the lips of plastic items, or if an item has a large recessed lip that collects a lot of water. Pots, plates, flatware and glasses are completely dry. For me, the spot-free shine that clean items have offsets the less-than-perfect drying of my model.

If I had to get a new dishwasher, I would get a 800 series Bosch with the 3rd Rack. I have looked at them in the stores, and like them.

Hi Joe. Thanks for tyour you comments. I am also looking at the 800 Series.

I remodeled the kithen 5 years ago. I purchased all the Electrolux Appliances.

The smooth top electric stove and the microwave are great.

The dishwasher is terribe. Does not always clean, detergent left in cups. It has a hard time getting peanut butter off a knife or spoon. At times, a plastic take out container has grease left inside. I purchased from PC Richards and bought a 10 year contract. They have been out here a few times already. Last Saturday was one of the days. They told my wife to make sure you run the hot water before turning on. I always do this. The dishwasher is practically over ther water heater in the basement. I checked the temp and my temp from the water heater is 145 degress. I will keep calling them until they replace it. They do this if they have to come out here too many times. I would get a gift card for the full purchase price including tax and I would pick out a new machine.

Now for the refrigerator............. I had a Electrolux side by side.

Freezing vegetables in drawer and where the cold air comes into the refrigerator throught the vent: there is an ice build up. The techinician put apiece of tape over one vent hole. lol

I paid over $2200.00 for this refrigerator and do not want tape over the vent.

I also paid $1100. for the dishwasher. I am really unhappy with the performance.

Sorry to hear about the frustrations you are having with your dishwasher. It is a pain to have to deal with the service calls, especially when your problem isn't resolved. Good luck! I don't think you will be disappointed with a Bosch - I think overall, they offer good value and great performance.

Cant beat a Bosch. We also advise it is NOT necessary to run the hot water before starting our dishwashers.

Thanks SCott and Joe.

I did not think it was necessary either. The repair guy does not know what he is talking about. All the machines heat the water.

Now I am working on getting the appliances replace free of charge with the 10 yhear contact I have.

Well, drying is just as good as on all the other Bosch modells. Don't know if they would pick one with Zeolith (are they avaible over there?), but if so, the drying gets slightly better then the normal ones but i hearded that the Zeolith *can* course a certain smell, not really bad, but also not really fresh...
And make sure to get one with a whole metall tub (no plastic bottom!) and maybe a auto cycle. The cycle just cleans everything.

Drying

I cannot understand why a simple fan cannot do the drying. No heat of course like the older Kitchenaids or Maytags, but a fan and a vent that opens on the front panel to let the steam out.

Simple drying is well. But if you want a fan, get Miele ;) they have still a fan drying. But Zeolith BSH's have something kind of this except the air is filtrated, pushed through the Zeolith which takes of the moisture and converts it into heat.

Before getting the Bosch, I was concerned about the condensation drying method and the manual clean filter, especially since I just scrape and load, no pre-rinsing. The drying is a non-issue for me since normally everything is completely dry. The filter is almost always completely clean, so I only check it every few months. Each time I unload the dishwasher, I am glad that everything is sparkly clean! When it comes time to replace my dishwasher, I definitely will get another Bosch.

Scraping is better then everything with Bosch! Uses less water and these filters normally don't get blocked at all...

I will probably be shot because there seems to be a Bosch band wagon going on here, but have you considered any of the Whirlpool gang? I have a Kitchenaid purchased in March and have been very happy with it. It is quiet, does an excellent job, has a 1 hour option, fair on water usage 6.4 gal for heavy cycle.

Once that you want to avoid: (My opinion)
Frigidaire/Electrolux very poor results, more frustration than cleaning.

We do not have Zeolite here in the US.

Rayjay........While we don't recommend running the tap before starting Bosch dishwashers, as I understand some other manufactures still recommend it.

I would recommend KitchenAid.  Probably the best line of kitchen appliances out right now.

I would not recommend KitchenAid. Our current one crapped out in 11 months, the previous one crapped out twice which is why I bought another thinking it was a one off situation. ... It cleans well though, while it works.

Whichever one you buy,, get an extended warranty.

For a dishwasher, or kitchen appliances............

KitchenAid / Maytag / Whirlpool.............I have not had a problem with any of the WP family appliances.

Maybe, only maybe if they get a good deal, ask them to get lower line Miele? ;)

I just bought a portable Whirlpool DW in June and have been very happy with it. Everything comes out dry and spotless. It's not overly loud and doesn't take too long in my opinion. Can't say anything about water usage. Most new appliances nowadays don't use hardly any water anyway.

Update

Looks like they may go with an LG dishwasher because they got a package deal of LG kitchen appliances from Best Buy.

I suggested Bosch but they had never heard of it..

They must be warned...

I own two LG dishwashers both of them has seen the inside of the repairshop quite a lot. I have given the one away to mother in law, she has had numerous problems with it, the other one is at our beach house and within the first two months of owning it the wheels on the racks started to perrish. And now there is some other fault because it keeps giving and error code. Yes they have a lot of bells and whistles but thats about it, Korean glitter boxes, with funnky tunes. They are really not well built machines and I would rather go with anything else, although I believe in Siemens and Miele.

No you must steer them away from the light, or glitter boxes!!!!

Cheers

Im not sure about Maytag on the price, but Maytag is a very good brand. Whirlpool and Kenmore, not so great.

Figure I should put my two cents worth in too. I just got through replacing all my kitchen appliances with stainless steel Kenmore Elite ones. Everything matches right down to the big handles on everything including the trash compactor. Nice stuff, seems to be well built too. The dishwasher has that powerscrub thing called "turbo zone", but I haven't actually used it yet. I'll let you know how it does. Gotta be better than the Frigidaire one I had that was about 3 years old.

My experience with a Frididaire dishwasher was: you could have a better job if you just let the dog lick the plates clean.

DO NOT get Fridgidare. My grandma has one and she cannot stand hers. She hates it so much. You could get a 2008 Model Jet Clean Maytag stanless steel one. My grandma had that before she moved into a condo with the evil Fridgidare. She loved that Maytag. It cleaned so well and sanitized you dishes probably better than any other.

I did my first load of dirty dishes in the new Kenmore Elite. I must say, it certainly does clean well. Everything with the exception of a small spoon rest plate that I had covered up with another piece came out totally spotless. I guess it should considering what it cost proving again, you get what you pay for in most cases.

Can't complain about mine: this load was double-washed, triple-rinsed and sanitized in 95 minutes.

Can't complain about mine:

Are your sure about that, I think I see scrambled egg remnants on one of those dinner plates?

Further update on the new DW: They got the Frigidaire working again so they are going to hold off on a new one for now.

Thanks for all the advice.
