Does this machine lack a tub brake like the solenoid machines? The lids stayed locked well into the rinse fill because the tub was coasting to a stop. |

This model has a tub brake. It was introduced when the reversing motor models were first produced. Congrats on a great find! Is this a large capacity model? I can't tell from the pics. |

Amazing...these machines were so plentiful here that it seems strange someone would feel they are sort of a rareity. I think there may still be a few of these around in Oklahoma people are using. |

I can't get it to agitate, it does not have a timed fill. Bad or clogged pressure switch? Matbe just needs to be reset.
It does not brake when it stops spinning. Here is a short video: s1187.photobucket.com/user/Master... Quick pic of the underneath. |

it doesn't have the sort of brake that you may be thinking of, its more of a pad below the fluid drive I believe, that sort of puts a drag on it to slow it down....I have to recheck on mine.......most of these did not have a lid lock....
also that chamber that collects the water for the pressure switch maybe all mucked up and need cleaned out as well...check waterways going to it as well, is water flowing into it as it should?.... mine was a 1978 model....and had a porcelain solid tub...and mega heavy |

your model and the one I had was running near the end of the 70's....right about when Raytheon took over and went to perforated tubs, they kept part of the control panel design for a while....
heres an early 80's design....the lid opens towards the back....but the control panel tilt and end caps are the same as yours.... |

Congratulations Matt on your great find. It looks like one of the later SQ solid tub machines. If it has a lid lock it does not have much of a brake, just a little friction pad under the fluid drive clutch that Martin mentioned. If it is one of the later larger capacity machines without a lid lock it has a REAL BRAKE assembly mounted above the main spin drive pulley. SQ did not make these very long and diffidently had some serious problems with this design.
All that said, you and I are lucky enough to both know the same friend in Cleveland that probably knows this machine better than anyone I have ever met, give Bob a call. |

there is a grease fitting. When I get depressed, I look at your pics and marvel at the solid metal construction and the famous Arc-Q-cuate transmission proven in millions of installations. |

Hey Matt, CONGRATS on your find! I have the same machine but in Avocado. There is no "pressure switch" for water level perse, it's more of a float arrangement in that plastic tank on the back of the outer tub.
(The adjustment for water level on my washer is off. If I set it for a "full load" it fills the tub and then overflow for a few minutes. I have to set mine about about "1/2 load" for a full tub/load.)
As the machine fills, some of the water is diverted into that tank (there's a small funnel at the top of it). Once the water level in the tank moves the float (and water level switch), the inlet valve closes and there's a 30 second or so pause before it starts agitating.
Once the agitation period ends, it pauses. During that pause, a solenoid lifts the plunger blocking the drain port in that small tank and the water drains into the outer tub.
As John said there should be a tub brake, mine has one and stops the spinning tub in about 5 or 6 seconds.
I hope this helps! Kevin |

Kevin.....
is it possible for your SQ.... you may have too high of water pressure..... or your may be missing the restrictor to limit water flow..... I had to locate and install the restictors in mine, although time filled, it normally requires about 3 to 4 minutes to fill, without the restrictor, it was filling in about 2 minutes....way too fast |

Martin,
I have to watch the water pressure / flow on my Unimatic being it is a "real" timed fill machine. But no, on this Speed Queen water pressure doesn't matter because it has that plastic reservoir on the back of the outer tub which fills as the tub fills. Once the water level float / switch is satisified, water flow stops and timer starts again. Even though this washer is a solid tub, it really is a metered fill, not a timed fill.

The metered fill SQ washers used pressure switches, as above. They still used a restricted water valve like the time-fill models to control the rate of flow into the machine. Replacing the valve with an unrestricted type will throw off the "measuring" system.
Once you get the machine hooked up and water flows through it's normal system, it may work just fine though replacing the hose from the tank to the pressure switch would be a good preventative step. With the separate tank outside the main tub, filling with a hose or bucket only makes for fun spin-out. |
