I have to say these were my second all time favorite control panel design next to the 1970s Maytag center dials, which are my favorites by far. I love the nostalgic look of them; and of course certainly the warm homey feel they have. The 80s Kenmores in particular always stood out to me, they still bring up memories from years ago being out in the winter then coming in to do laundry at my Grandma's house who had a pair. I loved using them, I still am kicking myself for not saving a pair when I had the chance.  I don't know, I guess Ive always had a thing for center dial washers.

Anyway, does anyone have any pics of center dial Kenmore Washers and Dryers?

This one isn't mine, but here goes:

Ooohhh NICE! :D

The 80 series is very close to what my Grandma had, just the water selector was incremental. If I remember right those washer had a very long drain cycle in that the pump would evacuate the tube in about a minute but the machine wouldn't start spinning until about 3 or 4 minutes had passed, that would always intrigue me.

Many years ago when my late partner and I bought our first house and we needed a washer fast and cheap. I bought a Kenmore BD machine at the Salvation Army store that still looked new. It had a lot of options and served us well for many years, but every time I used it and saw that little "Lady Kenmore" plate that was glued to the front I thought of the many, many real Lady Kenmores I saw years before. This machine had no buttons, no fluorescent lights and almost no chrome...how the mighty had fallen :-(

the night-light above the timer just didn't cut it

Night light

I have never seen a TOL Kenmore in person interestingly. But as for the night light I agree a full tube or one of those under cabinet/ holiday light strips at the very least would have been a better deal.

LK With Night Light

That is the 1976 LK, which debuted the Dual Action Agitator. My aunt and uncle had the next model down the line.

Automatic above the temp sw

chetlaham's profile picture

I notice that a lot of the higher up models had "automatic" above the temperature switch, was this a selectable position or did it mean theses had ATC in them? Always wondered.

A designated position ... in which the timer controls the temperature per the labeled cycle/fabric selection.

I hope Gordon posts his "brushed chrome" center dial. It is one of my favorites.

I remember those, they used to spin drain. The tub guard really looks GEish. I remember the first time I opened one up for a few seconds I thought Sears had switched to GE as a maker lol. Surprisingly even though Ive heard the spin draining wore on the clutches I still know some that went 15/20 years.

It was in 1981 when the Normal cycle was renamed Cotton/Sturdy, and the font was more condensed. Would anyone know the name of that font?

I don't remember the name but I know in the late 70s early 80s these machines went through a few cosmetic differences. Same for the late 80s. I do admit I like the condensed font more. Also just to add I remember their one speed machines have "short" "prewash" and "Normal" in addition to having a smaller cabinet. Sales guy said it was for older laundry rooms that didn't have the space.

the 'symbols' on dials are nice, but I liked when machines spelled it all out for you at a glance....and with a line dividing them, you knew where exactly the machine was at...rinse almost over, and heading for last spin...

WASH----SPIN----RINSE----SPIN

I rather see wash minutes than, Heavy, Normal, Light.....then your guessing at it!

Sanitize?

How did this machine Sanitize under the Rinse and Sanitize option? Or was that a bit of a fib? LOL

Sanatize

I think it had something to do the bleach being dispensed if I remember. Its been some time though since I used a Frigidaire like that, but that cycle statement to made me wonder.

Right, it's to run a bleach-rinse for sanitizing the machine as would be appropriate if someone in the household is having an illness.

1976-78 Kenmore Model 70

I see how the DELICATE label is in smaller beige font on the 6-minute increment of the KNIT cycle. Must have been the following year when the DELICATE cycle label was modified as the same size as the KNIT label.

BTW, when did Kenmores first have rubber knobs?

GM Frigidaires cool-down process

Pretty self-explanitory. How did that process work on those washers?
