As best I can remember, the TOL automatics had the tub light from the late AMP machines where it was in the lid, like for a chest freezer. Then the light lens was in the tub cover at the 3 o'clock position where I think all had the place where the oblong opening could be punched through to hold the lens, but only the TOL washers had the light, unless someone sorta "modified" one. Tub lights survived through the A806 until the mid 70s when the band at the bottom of the control panel went from blue to gold. After that it was just the stack top loader that had the light and it was in front, not at the 3 o'clock position.

More maytag tub lite info

I think i have it figured out i just picked up an early 806 and it does have the tub lite it also has the long stem Chrome ring lint filter , another giveaway is when the small bleach dispenser with the screen top was on the front right you got the tub lite but when they went to the larger bleach dispenser on the front left the tub lite was not installed it also seems to be that machines form the late 60`s to early 70`s in the high end 806 line may or may not have the tub lite as i have several 806 machines without the lite anyway i think that it`s the coolest thing to have on a machine wish i could find more nothing exist in a washing machine past the late 70`s for me !!!

tub lights in neptunes

The tublight in the Neptunes is one of the main reasons they had the problem with mildew. The customers were too afraid to leave the door open in case the light would burn out sooner than expected. So,they'd shut the door tight after the final wash load was done and a week later open the washer and be surprised to see the mildew in the washer.I always question those who come in complaining about that if they'd do the same thing (close the door tightly) to their refrigerator or freezer in their summer home after the fall when they'd shut it down untill spring??Why not?because you say it would get mold in it? I CAN"T HEAR YOU!!!! I rest my case.

Well, I always keep the door on my Neptune 7500 closed when it's not in use, and it's never had a problem with mold.

But the 7500 also has a fast last rinse tumble pattern to clean the inner and outer tubs of any mold food. I also use STPP in nearly every load, which helps prevent washer deposits and also gets the clothes and washer very clean. Add to that, at least one hot wash a week.

Moral: no food for mold, mold won't grow. Mold can't grow with just plain water and a plastic or stainless steel surface.

So, in other words, I wouldn't necessarily blame the tub light for the Neptune mold issues. I don't think leaving the door open will eliminate all chance of mold if the washer or detergent is leaving mold food in the washer, and numerous complaints of mold "even though I leave the door open" in various front loaders would seem to bear this out.

By the way, it's not difficult to put the washer on a power switch so that one can cut the power to it when it is not in use. A side benefit for the 6500 and 7500 washers is that there will not be a phantom electrical load, and the circuitry will be protected from power spikes/surges while the switch is off.

Door Open as Power Switch?

Most modern FL (also TL) have electronic timer, electronic motor control. A very small standing power (about 2 watts) is used although the control-selector is OFF.

For example, my Huebsch FL will take a current of about 20mA at standby (OFF). If the door is open, the current becomes 0.
The schematic diagram of the FL shows that the supply power is switched off completely (No standby power at all) when the door is open. The door interlock could be acting as an electro-mechanical power switch.

You could check whether the door interlock of your washer could act as a power switch.
