Darn you AW friends.... DARN you!    First I get text messages from the East Coast about it.   Then an hour or so later I get a phone call about it.... but it was too late, I was already on my way.   Armed with my truck, my dolly, some cash and my dad so I could drive in the carpool lane... I was on my way to Culver City to check this thing out.

Yes it's a 1965 gas Lady Kenmore combo!   It was built in the 33rd week of 1966.

Except for the missing lower front panel, it's all there and it did go through the motions when I plugged it in before loading it in my truck.

Model # 6509931W1

Serial # 01881J633

Yes this is the one that was on ebay.   I contacted the seller and asked if I could come look at it.   Went home, got my truck and headed out into the lovely LA freeway system that is known as a "parking lot" during the very loosely termed "rush hour".

I arrived, inspected it inside (I removed the back panel) and out.   Except for that lower panel it looks to be all there.   It's not perfect, the chrome is heavily pitted, but it easily went through the motions when I plugged it in.  I asked the seller what he wanted to do... take an offer... leave it on ebay and see where it goes or......    He said he's rather have the cash so I made an offer and he agreed....... and the rest is history, as they say.

Great catch Kevin. I'm glad to see this rare piece found its way to a good home. I'm also looking forward to more photos when you have a chance to go through it some.

Looks like the one I grew up with. It was gas and was used two to three times everyday.

Awesome Kevin! One of the fastest 'saves' ever! Great to see one more of these increasingly rare machines rescued from being parted or worse :)

What are the three black buttons for? I can't make them out in the pics.

Says WASH ONLY, but the others are too difficult to make out in the photo.

Malcolm

I think the one on the right might say AIR TUMBLE..

Good for you Kevin!! I can completely understand how hard it would be to resist a find like this when it turns up in your area.

Will you put this one into production or use it for parts?? Is the front toe plate gone or had it just been removed??

One way or another, it's a great find!! Congratulations!

That is awesome Kevin! I'm so glad you snagged this puppy up. Very cool to hear from John that you can grab a bottom panel from a Whirlpool/Kenmore dryer.

Very cool, Kevin!! I love the "just right" setting the previous owner placed on the dryness control. Shall we run a gas line to your water line, or a water line to your gas line?

Those black buttons....

revvinkevin's profile picture

Yes Malcolm is correct. From L to R they are: WASH ONLY - MANUAL - AIR TUMBLE.

As many of you are familiar I'm sure, you press the desired cycle button, turn the timer knob and it locks into place for that cycle. The "Manual" button is the release for those cycle buttons so the timer can be turned and set anywhere.

Thank you to all! I have to admit I was pretty excited about this find as I really like this design of the KM combo! As I listed in the thread title, "Lady makes 5" as this is now the 5th washer/dryer combo in my collection!

Jon: If the seller insisted on doing the sale thru ebay, I was ready with my new iPhone in hand (Yes I have now joined the iCult) to do the "buy it now". However he didn't.

Kevin

Very nice - so, are you replacing or adding to your other 1966 LK Combo? I just watched the video of it
on YouTube.

Collecting as influenced by aw.org ...reminds me of a line in the movie, "The Mask"(Jim Carey):

WOW

akronman's profile picture

Someday maybe I'll get a combo, in the meantime, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Now questions and comments, of course.

37,000 btu's is damn impressive, but scary. I like the "JUST RIGHT" sticker. Is the dryer a timer-versus-heat model, no genuine moisture sensing? And it looks like only full heat or air tumble, no low temp drying?

I am guessing the silver door is the dryer lint filter, like WP did for years. Is the other white door in the lid for all the detergents and rinse aids? You know we'd all love more pics.

About what #load size?

The DELICATE button is the speed switch? Seems weird to have a DELICATE, then blast it with 37,000 btu heat, lol.

Again, WOW and CONGRATULATIONS

Phil, the LK combo in that video is John L's (Combo52).

Mark, John was telling me last night this machine has a modulating gas valve (varies continuously), so it's not exactly a "all or nothing" type of drying. I'm not sure how it controls "dryness", though I assume it goes by the temp of the dryer exhaust. John L. can better answer this as he knows these machines inside and out.

Yes the chrome lid is where the lint screen resides. The other lid covers the 3 dispensers (detergent, bleach and fabric softener).

As for the "Delicate Fabrics" button, I just believe it shortens the wash time, again I will refer to John's expertise on this one.

Kevin

P.S. This Lady makes 5 washer/dryer combos and 3 are Lady Kenmores! YAY!

Bottom Panel:

One can be fabricated by any sheet-metal shop. You will need good drawings, but they can do it.

The tricky part would be figuring out what sort of fastening system it used.

I agree it's a cool looking machine! How does the boot look? Is it still pliable and useable? I know you saw it run dry but how was the spin? Quiet? Enquiring minds must know...

Bottom panel = KM gas dryer panel

I believe Combo52 said in the original thread about this machine that the lower panel should be the same as or similar to one from a Kenmore gas dryer from the 1960s - 1980s.

Cycle Buttons

appnut's profile picture
Look under the flap door for the additives to see cycle charts--description. Water temp is tied into the minutes on the timer dial. WnW and Whites are 10 minutes. colors 8. Delicate may be 6 minutes or could be 8. The only difference being a cold rinse. Cold water wash is 6 minutes or 4 minutes. The buttons control wash time as well as warm or cold rinse, depending upon cycle. Dryer is auto dry timer advances when gas is turned off until gas is needed to add heat during dry again.

KM Gas Combo Auto Dry System

combo52's profile picture
Actually the gas burner NEVER shuts off until the timer advances to the cool-down period, the timer only starts to advance when the modulating burner flame reaches a minimum size which is determined by the user set dryness setting on the control panel. This was a great non-electronic system that really worked, it did a great job of compensating for not only load size but also exhaust duct length and ambient room temperature.

The Electric combos and the basic gas models also did not cycle the heat on and off, on those the timer just advanced when a user set exhaust temperature was reached.

UPDATE...........

revvinkevin's profile picture

This Lady is not well, but I suppose I wasn't expecting it to work perfectly when I got it unloaded (though I was secretly hoping).

* The water inlet valve doesn't close.

* The pump... doesn't.

* She leaks.

* The front diverter valve is seized and the solenoid smoked itself, during testing.

On the up side, it looks like someone has cared for this thing over the years.   Material was put between certain thing to insulate one from the other.   The entire bottom panel / base plate has been repainted inside and out with something black... POR 15 perhaps??   Who knows.   A rebuilt transmission / compressor assembly has been installed at some point.

Well, that's the news from Lake Wobegon... where the women are strong, the men are good looking and the children are above average.

Kevin

I know how you must be feeling, Kevin... When I found that '56 GE Combo in Syracuse this summer and it 'worked' when I first tested it I was elated. However, there were lots of other problems with it and I wound up parting it out...

Your 'Lady' sounds like it's in good overall shape, though - you might be able to score another parts donor machine and get her back in service again! You do seem to have a knack for finding these machines, after all...
