My new maytag washer(a50) is pretty good. I have been encountering a problem with it, though. When I drain the washer, the spinner makes a whine noise, similar to feedback on a microphone. Again, your supposed is GREATLY APPRECIATED!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!

Something else

I forgot to say one thing else. The spinner sounds like it has a loose belt. I mean the motor starts up then the spinne accelerates. Thank you in advance for your reply.

keep in mind, an empty spinner running will 'whistle' air thru the holes at high speed, a few TLers will do the same thing when empty...

when I worked at a shop, if it didn't whistle, there was something wrong.....not always, but something to keep in mind....

it is possible of a loose/worn belt....that goes also for the springs for tension for the pump....

Similar thoughts.

I also was thinking the same about the belt. If something is in the spinner, it doesn't whistle. But if I put a plastic bag in it, it will stop the noise. Thank you for your response.

Belt tightening

How do I tighten the belt on the spinner? Something on the pump? The belt will soon wear out with repeated use loose because it slips when it starts and makes a slight screeching noise. If you can send a picture of how to tighten it, that would be GREAT. Thank you in advance.

Whistling A50 When Spinning

If it only makes the noise when empty this is COMPLETELY NORMAL as Martin suggested, the belt requires NO ADJUSTMENT on these as the pump uses the same belt and is spring loaded to maintain proper belt tension.

Just Enjoy your new washer and have a happy holiday and great New Year.

HMMM...

Mine looks like it has been sitting in the garage or whatever for at least 10 years. Do you think the spring is stretched out or the belt stiff? If the pump's screws are rusted, how long do you think it will last? Also, I can EASILY move the belt like 2 inches. I don't think the belt is supposed to move THAT much. The interior of the machine (mechanics) is dirty and rusted, and the back panel's vents are rusted, and the spinner's drive motor has a few spots of rust here and there.

OH NO

It looks like the spinner's seal is leaking... the big question is ... can it be fixed?

I need to check

After a peek through the vent on bottom at the spinner's drive block, it looked like there were water marks down it. I'll have to test it with the front (possibly back) panel off to see where it was leaking or if it was just water splashing out somewhere. I will update of where it's leaking from. If it's the pump, instill can find that part. If it is not, that will be another story.

Rusted spinner motor

Also, look at the inside of the motor.

hey kitty!!

did you see that there are a few maytag twin tub parts listings (from the same seller, i think?) on ebay right now?? here is a link for one of the motors. i don't know which one you need but they have both motors up right now and also it looks like the whole spinner can side's parts.
ebay link:

I saw that..

... But I ONLY need the seal, not the motor, but it could use a new one. The motor is rusted, but I think it should last a while. I have seen motors FAR more rusted than that.

i was just thinking....

if you plan to keep & use that maytag A50 for quite a while, it doesn't hurt to have extra "spare" parts with you, for those "just in case" moments that we never think about & dread, when they do happen.

i know with my hoover 0510 twin tub, when i bought belts, i bought more than one and hoses, i only bought one (washtub to drain pump) cuz that was all i could find. but me & my way of thinking is, may as well buy what you can find right now cuz who knows if you will be able to find it again, later on down the line. especially with vintage or any twin tubs, since they are no longer being made here in the united states. but this is just my way of thinking.

if you decide to go for them spare parts, good luck, i hope you get what you need (& "extras"). ;o)

HMMM...

That motor doesn't look right for my machine. I can always improvise for a part. Thank you for your time. The motor (on my machine) is in so-so condition.

Motor For MT Porta Washer

combo52's profile picture
The motor pictured is the wash motor, A50s have TWO motors, a motor for a leaking MT A50 is the least of your problems, the spinner shaft seal is often very difficult if not impossible to replace.

the spinner side parts....

hippiedoll's profile picture
here is the ebay link for the spinner parts from the same seller. maybe you can make an offer for just the part you need? or you can buy the whole lot to have the extra "spare" parts:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Maytag-A...

and here is the other motor they have listed as well. maybe this is the motor like your's:

Motor For MT Porta Washer

The 2nd listing is the correct motor for the spinner-pump side of this machine, the first listing pile of parts does not look like it includes anything like a shaft seal for the spinner tub, mostly just parts for the washer side.

Lid gasket

What would you recommend for the lid gasket? Once I accedintally put a little too much water in it and during the wash cycle, it leaked. Any recommendations?
