lLast April(2005)I bought a GE Wpxh208aww washer and a dpxh43eaww electric dryer on closeout at a competitor's store that was folding.I got the set for $499 and had them for 1 month.A friend of mine bought a KitchenAid Onsomble pair and didn't bother to measure before purchasing them.Once they arrived, she found out they were too deep and would not fit in her closset. She called me and I offered a swap.I had already Regestered both the washer and dryer on line(WWW.GEAPPLIANCES.COM)so they would be covered and wrote down the models and serial numbers in both use and care guides along with the date of purchase and where.Last week,my friend called to tell me the washer was not spinning properly and after I tried to trouble shoot over the phone,I came to the conclusion that the "mother board "might be the problem and being less than a year old,all I needed to do was call 1-800-GECARES sand schedule a service call for them to repair it right???? NOT!!!!!! Somehow the cheapass paper model and serial number that ELECTROLUX puts on these machines for GE came off.I received a call yesterday from my friend who imediately handid her phone to the tech and he said he could not service the machine without the model and serial number on it.I told him not only did I copy it and write it in the use and care guide but it was also regestered and I had just purchased a 4 year survice plan at work on both the washer and dryer for $180.00!He still refused to even touch it.I went as far as calling GE Customer service and they too said that without the tag, there would be no service.Nowhere on the machine or in the use and care guide dose it mention that GE will not service their product w/out there being any model or serial number tag on it.Plus, since I regestered on line directly to GE,they should have record of it.Boycot GE they do not stand behind their products.

Chuck, welcome to the cruel world of GE.

A PAPER model/serial tag--you're kidding, right? Maybe Electrolux/GE has some reasoning behind this; if the machine isn't going to last more than 1-2 years, why bother wasting (oops I mean SPENDING) money to stamp out a metal nameplate for it? Not to mention completely ignoring any record of registration for the product makes registration pointless to begin with..."satisfied customer" my ass!

I am glad you wtrote this. Thanks We have a brand new GE dryer. I just checked and where they put this paper tag is in a very dumb spot. As you pulll the clothes out you can easily make this tag wear or fall off. What ever happened to a quality metal plate. We have a 2 year old Frigilux FL washer and the same type of tag is just above the top of the rubber boot. We will keep a watch on both tags. I just checked my GE range which is going to be 2 years old in May and the label is a better quality then the dryer, our refridge is only a few months old and it too has the cheap paper tag on the side of the interior.

Our TOL Frigidaire Dishwasher is pretty much a bottom rack only machine now. If you load up the upper rack it falls off the rollers when you pull it out if you don't hold it. IT is most likly going to be replaced with a Bosch - 500 Series
SHX46A05UC Integra 500 Series Dishwasher or Evolution Nation's #1 Rated SHU66C05UC. I hope this one will last.

What ever happend to the old "Quality goes in before the name goes on" Zenith's motto

Shameless Profiteering

I think that when you fill out those "Warranty" cards, the manufacturers use those to put on a list for tageting you for junk mail. I intentionally spell my name a little wrong when I fill out those cards. One misspell for each mfg. Only then I can tell what junk mail I receive originated from what manufacturer.

Get legal on them

Suggest you contact your state's attorney general office, or consumer protection agency, to see if you and your friend have any recourse with GE on this. It seems to me to be a bit fraudulent for a manufacturer to put a flimsy self-destructing sticker on an appliance and then require its presence for any warranty service.

FWIW, My Maytag Neptune also has a paper sticker inside its door, and I believe it's required for warranty service also. I did a change out of the inner door panel myself at one point, and was careful to remove the old sticker and apply it to the new panel before I needed some warranty service work. It came off in one piece and stuck just fine to the new panel. So at least it wasn't GE quality.

Another option for you might be to contact the consumer affairs dept at your local TV, radio, or newspaper. Quite often a business will bend over backwards to avoid the bad publicity that can ensue if their less-than-admirable practices are givnn the light of day.

A lesson to future GE owners might be to remove any flimsy stickers that look like they are going to fall off on their own, xerox a copy or two, and then glue them back on with waterproof adhesive.

I also wonder if perhaps your store receipt has the S/N on it?

Last resort might be to get creative with Photo Shop and create your own look-alike sticker with the correct info...

Good luck!

Re: Local Info:

We have a local TV Channel-3 here in Sacramento, CA that has "Call-3, for Action" so maybe you can see if one of your Local TV Stations there has something similar there. They really do great research and get results.

I also agree about contacting your Local Radio, TV and the Attorney Generals and Consumer Protection Agency about this matter as well.

My Mother-In-Law had a GE Compact Portable Washer that the Control Board went out under Warrentee a couple of years ago. It was the first ever Repair needed on the Washer and the person who came out to check it out submitted the Estimate to GE's Extended Warrantee Company and they made a Discounted Reply, telling her that it wasn't worth Repairing, because the Cost was supposedly going to cost more than 1/2 of their supposed Value of the Washer. If it hadn't been for me helping her, she hadn't gotten more of a "Buy-Out" than she got, because I went back to the place of purchase and they Faxed the Invoice, so it made the Value go up $150.00 more. She still had to end up getting another new Compact Portable Washer. This time, we went to Sears and she actually got the Floor-Sample Model and it was even at a time that they were having a Special Sale, so she got 30%-off the Retail Price, plus off the Clearence Cost of the Washer. I advised her to get the Extended Warrantee through Sears, just in case. So far, so good, it is basically almost the same Machine, but it has the Kenmore Name on it instead of the GE Name. It is also sold as a WP Compact Portable Washer as well.

Good Luck with you hopefully getting this matter taken care of in your favor and I seriously hope that "We" can get something done about Companies like GE to know and change their strict Rules about the need for the Model/Serial Plate/Paper on the Machine, even if you've got them on your Receipt as well. It should certainly be accepted for any Repairs.

Peace and Better Times with Warrantees, Steve

I was able to call and finaly get the correct information from my regestration. However,I was still told in a loud, stressfull voice that in no way can GE service that machine under the warranty w/out the actual tag being on the machine.I told the woman that if they didn't want to lose about $1.4 million (my sales last year in appliances and service contracts)in sales this year, they better send a tech out to repair my washer.Otherwise,I and all my co-workers will boycot their products as well as their deliveries.GE was the last one I would have expected to not back their products."GE, we just don't give a shit!"

on this same subject....

This is about a car, but totally related. Last month my brother bought a new Nissan X-Terra, top of the line model. The dealer he bought it from located it from another dealer and had it in their posession for 36 hours before my brother picked it up. My brother had it for 24 hours, took it out to our parents to wax it in their garage. While doing so with the help of Dad, they noticed flaws in the hood. That prompted them to look further and under the hood, there were about 4 more indications that the vehicle was damaged and repaired, yet sold as "new" and nothing disclosed about repair work. My brother went back to the dealer he bought it from and told them what he found, and told them he knew they didn't do it and he didn't do it because of the short time both of them had it in their posession. The dealer recommended he call Nissan of North America and report it, because the repair was either done at the factory or the dealer it was located from and they were liable. They also said they would do whatever they could to help my brother. Nissan of North America did look into it, but there was no repair order from the factory or from the dealer it originally came from, so they said they could do NOTHING to help my brother. The dealer he actually bought it from picked up the tab to repair it in an attempt to help my brother the best they could. Based on the facts, it was obvious that Nissan of North America was ultimately liable, whether it was the factory or the dealer who committed fraud, yet they took no responsibility or action. So while avoiding GE maybe avoid Nissan too.
As for that whole thing about serial tags, what does GE think....you are making appliances in your garage that just happen to look exactly like their product and trying to scam a warranty claim out of them?
You talk to someone on the phone because you have a problem. They sit in front of a computer and look for a "reason code" to input so they can come up with a solution for you, and if the answer doesn't fall into the computer parameters, they can't help you. Can people just not think and reason anymore, or do companies intentionally hire people who can't reason so they don't have to pay out warranty claims? Good Grief.

Many times the factory "field scraps" appliances. When they do that, the model tags are pulled and discarded. Sometimes these appliances never get scrapped, they "reappear",so to speak.Maybe GE thinks you're trying to get scrapped appliances serviced under warranty.Either way, with a valid receipt, showing purchase date, and models purchased,I don't think they have a case.Time to contact the attorney general.

My opinion is given freely, value accordingly....

my G.E. fridge

Wow!!
I have just shuddered reading some of these posts about G.E.,I bought a G.E. Side-By-Side from Kleenmaid about a year ago and while there have been no problems so far, I hope it does last me a long time as it cost me about $3ooo Aus Dollars to buy it.
I got it because it was just the right size for the 3 of us and seemed to be much better built then the crappy looking Samsung and L.G. fridges and also came with an automatic 5 year warranty no questions asked.
I am disappointed that G.E. seems to have fallen away over there because many years ago they were considered one of the top brands in appliances here in Australia, and I must confess, I was most likely their biggest fan here.

I agree w/ Goatfarmer. Unfortunately, since there is no tag on the machine, you cannot positively ID the machine as the correct one in question. That is not GE's fault, although I agree that the tags these companies put on could be alot sturdier. The tech was just doing a CYA move. I would try to see if there is another tag inside the machine or hidden somewhere else.

I spoke to our GE Rep who evidently found out through the "Versatronic Grape Vine" about my delemma and imediately got through to one of the local service companies and insisted they take care of this problem a.s.a.p.I had gotten my serial number by calling the GE help line and typed it for proof. The correct filing date was on it as well as both the washer and dryer models and serial numbers.Once I told our GE rep. that, she told me she is going to get me a new tag for it and for the inconvenience and stress GE put us through, they are extending the washer's warranty another year. They are scheduled to come out this wednesday between 8AM and 12noon.I am off and will be sure to be there.I can't go today because about a mile and a half away from here,Extream Make over is tearing down a house and adjsent building where they take in homeless, and abused children.I have lots of clothes that I get free from nearby neighbors and mend and wash to give to the Anthony House. So this time,I'll donate about 5 huge bags all mended, washed, ironed and folded to the other home.My group(The Optomist Club of South Seminole County)has a doner who asked to stay annonomous and has written a check in the amount of $10,000 to contribute to their cause. They asked me to go during the restructuring and mingle with the crowd.Sometimes, the working crew takes vollentiers from the crowd to help out in their construction.Painters,plumbers,carpenters,electricians,...etc.

Glad to hear all has worked out well for you. I guess it just takes the right person to get things done. What a nice thing that is you do....to do something charitable is the most generous thing we can do.
