Would anyone know who manufactured the washer baseplates for the whirlpool washers ??? specifically the LDA-9800 belt drive models..... I have been told these are no longer available... thanks

Whirlpool / Kenmore belt-drive machines of that design haven't been produced since 1986.  Your LDA model dates to 1975-1976.  The only way you'll find a new baseplate is if you can find a long-established appliance service company somewhere that still has one on-hand.

Pictures of your machine (and the matching dryer?) would be appreciated.  It's a top-of-the-line model and is rare.

At this point in the game, the only source for base plates is to find a donor machine. In your case, you'd want to find a donor machine that was made before January of 1978.

As Glenn mentioned, some photos would be helpful :)

Thanks guys I am fairly new to the site... I will post pics of the washer and dryer pair.. they are in fantastic shape.. but want to rebuild them before I put them in use.... once I rebuild them I don't want to have to do a big job like that again... want to do it once and do it right, make sure everything is top notch with them and not have to worry about them breaking down at some point

Nice!

Beautiful set.  Are you sure that you need a new baseplate, or is it just a "while I am in there refurbishing everything" desire?

Yes just while I am in there I would like to put a new one in, just to make sure I will not have any problems with the center post down the line.... the center post on this one looks good... very shiny... except for the bottom portion where the tub seal is, I guess it needs a new wig wag and the dryer needs a new belt... I am going to replace all the seals, rollers etc on the dryer.... would like to replace parts on the washer prone to wear also... that is why I would like to start with a new baseplate, coat the center post and then go from there.... this set had seen very little use... I like the fact it has a self cleaning lint filter, I have a WP, DD that works fine other than no lint filter... if I happen to wash some of my kittens stuff or put things on the line.. there always seems to be either a ton of hair left on the kitten stuff or lint all over the stuff I put on the cloths line, which I use when I have the ambition.....

Hi Arris, I assume you posted those pictures as a reference and they are not actual photos that you took of your actual washer and dryer? The only reason I ask is the system pinged me with a "duplicate photo uploaded" warning as those same images are also seen in this thread --> www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/T....

Just checking to make sure there is no issue with the website. Thanks!

Kevin took those photos and since I did not have any taken here at my house yet, there was a post asking for pictures of them.. those were all I had, Kevin asked me not to post all of them. so I only posted those 2 just to show them to the member who asked for pics.. I will post more when they arrive here Monday.. thanks for having a watchful eye... you never know..... Jim

Hi Jim -

I'm glad to see that you got the machines that you wrote me about in November.

When you wrote, you said the baseplate was rusty, but upon further examination it sounds like the centerpost is nicely shiny except where the tub gasket mounts...is that right?

Rust typically starts on these centerposts at the mounting line where the tub gasket meets the centerpost. It then progresses upwards from there as seals wear. There are several members here who have painted very rusty, even fully surface rusted centerposts, with epoxy paint (POR-15 for example) with good success.

If you have a shiny centerpost, I would fix-up the gasket mounting area and replace the centerpost seals to keep moisture to a minimum in this area, and consider yourself fortunate that you have a nice part already. As I mentioned in my message to you earlier, the last baseplates available from Whirlpool were for the 1981-newer models which incorporated a revised baseplate profile and the 1978 centerpost. I believe I paid over $80-$100 wholesale for one in 1992. If it were still available today it would cost double or triple that as prices rise dramatically as they age on low volume parts.

The baseplate for your machine was used from late 1973 through December 1977, so only four years. The chances of finding a NOS baseplate are probably nearly nil. As to a donor machine, they are out there, but to find a better baseplate than you have, you'll need an unused machine or one even more lightly used than the one you have already. Baseplates from 24-inch machines, from standard capacity machines, or later than 1977 large capacity machines will not work in your machine for various reasons. The closest fit would be a 1978-1981 large capacity baseplate, however you would need to replace your basket drive and the wash basket.

If I understand the description of your machine's condition correctly, replacing this baseplate sounds unnecessary to me.

Gordon

Thanks Gordon.... I have never seen a base plate up close, I assumed they were made of thin material and just the rust on this one would cause it to break.. but it sounds like that may not be the case... but I would like to find one at some point if that were ever to happen.. I plan on keeping this machine for a while.. I don't do much laundry as it is just me.. but if I or anyone were to know of a good one available I would like to have one on hand, as time goes on I am sure they will be much harder to come by....thanks for you input I appreciate it.. I may be asking you or John for some helpful advice if I get into a jam with replacing anything on it.. thanks again...Everyone on here seems to be fantastic at offering help and I appreciate it....Jim

Jim -

The baseplates are a major component of the machine, and quite heavy. They support or suspend most all the weight of the machine except the cabinet. The machine that received the one baseplate I bought new was a 1983 Kenmore 70, which had its original baseplate "borrowed" by my service buddy to fix another. I bought that baseplate as the only major expense in rebuilding the 70-series remants for resale. With the baseplate out of the machine, it was nothing but a cabinet and top/console, all the rest of the parts were in a box. It was so light, I was able to wrap my arms around it and carry it off the truck and up my driveway, much to the amazement of a few neighbors who didn't know that the machine was gutted.

I understand your desire to have parts on hand to keep the machine running well for many years. Looking at that from your perspective, I think the most important thing to have would be a timer, preferably an NOS FSP timer. High-end models often use fancier timers which aren't as common as mid-line timers. I think the split gentle and knit cycles, along with Normal and Perm both with Super-wash makes this an uncommon timer. If you have a mid-seventies Singer timer, they were prone to lock-up and break cams and/or cam followers (happened to my Mom's 1974 large cap Kenmore), or if it has a Mallory timer, eventual dead spots are quite common. I think I would put a timer on the top of my "to find" list if you want to keep this gem for the very long term.

As to future advice, ASK AWAY, we're here to help. Its nice to see this vintage machine already being appreciated before it is even delivered.

Gordon

Gordon funny you mentioned the timer, John suggested the same thing... so I am working on finding one, that was at the top of my list... since I do not have either one yet (they are being delivered Monday) I am not sure what type of timer it has... thanks Jim
