Not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm looking for a wringer washer, and can't find one locally. It seems anyone in my area who has one still uses it and has no intentions of giving it up. (Trust me, I have stopped and asked at random houses where I saw one on the porch or sitting out back).

Also it sseems hardly anyone in this area was willing to spring for a model with a pump, most of the ones I have asked about, even though they were not for sale, were gravity drain models.

So here we go guys, can anyone help me find a wringer washer with a pump? I don't have an area suitable for a gravity drain model, I need one that can be used in the kitchen and pump into the sink

I would prefer a Kenmore or whirlpool if at all possible, but if a maytag is what is available I'm not in much position to be picky. My daily driver is a front load haier combo that someone talked me into trading them my center dial maytags for, and it works fine, but some tasks just require lots of water, and I miss using a wringer, especially for dying clothes and curtains, since a wringer can agitate indefinitely.

bonus

A bonus, actually my own personal holy grail, would be if it's a full skirt model, instead of a half skirt with the empty space underneath, but I don't dare hope for that much.

As a side note, does anyone know why maytag never made a full skirt model? All the other companies did back in the day.

try a search on e-bay for one, or try CL they pop up quite frequently all over the place. You could possibly get lucky there.

craigslist

Believe it or not, I have practically haunted craigslist for months, and the only ones I have found were several hours away and severely overpriced, as in, this ratty old thing from gramma's barn is gonna make us rich, type overpricing. 200 to 300 dollars for a 40 year old washer that may or may not work is just more than flesh and blood can bear, especially since all but 2 of those were also gravity drain models. One was a pump model speed queen that looked like it was dragged out of a landfill and they wanted 300 for it, the other was a crosley which I understand are newer with very touchy almost unusable wingers, and it was 250 if I remember right. And both were 4-5 hours away.

No luck at all finding any even semi locally on ebay.

well.....this may fit the bill as far as its a Kenmore, VisiMatic in fact, two speed, timer and manual operation, and with a pump....full skirt at that...at 75.00 better yet.....

BUT, you may have to travel a bit.....and that seems to be your demise....you have to travel to find what your looking for or have it shipped....in either case seems this what is comes down to, and costing one way or another....sorry

omg!

It's the dream machine! And it's pank! Lol. Seriously, that is pretty much my dream machine, right down to the pricing. Unfortunately shipping it or taking the road trip to go get it is far out of my budget. I suppose you are right, distance is the main issue for most of us. There are machines in my area that I'm sure other collectors would love to have, but they live far away from here. I'm not sure if the reason dream machines are always so far away is that we most desire what was rarely seen in our areas, or because the universe has a sense of humor, but they almost never seem to turn up " just down the street".

I Wish!

I had known several months back, the antique mall in Winston Salem had a beautiful Square Tub Maytag, one of the last ones they built and it was like new for 179.00, I want a Norge myself!

well, there is an option of sorts....not exactly a wringer....but I have used a regular automatic machine, and installed a switch in the line for the timer's motor, pausing it to allow it to wash for any amount of time, and then when ready, a flip of the button allowed the machine to continue with it's cycle....kinda of a semi-automatic

saves you from hand wringing all the clothes, with the exception of not being able to reuse the water...some pros and cons

just a thought....

Yu can find some on Ebay. I saw some Maytag wringer washers there. All kinds, even Easy. This what I found when I searched "wringer washer".

Looks to be about a 58, considering the faucet and the "in -lid" filter. Rare control with the quintessentially vintage "K" on the dial, and a knob rather than

a switch for the speed control. Very pretty. Nice condition for a 56 year old Lady. So used to seeing chrome on the wringer, this pink is a quite fetching.

Wish it were closer for you. Jackie would bring it to you for $250 or less.

Yogi-

Is that wringer unit complete on the top of the machine that you posted? It looks like it's missing the top cover off of the wringer, but I'm not sure. Otherwise, it's a great looking machine. First time I've ever seen a fully ramped roto. Someone here had mentioned this machine not too long ago. I remember looking at it then and having this question.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

WD

the wringer is opened across the top, with the exception to that safety release bar....

I remember using one once, and instructed to pour some water over top of the wringers between wash and rinse, to flush away the suds...

that roro-swirl washes like no other...theres just something about it compared to most straight vane agitators, that seems to do a better job....even two speeds were not all that common among wringers for the most part...

and very few wringers offered a lint filter of some sort....

for as nice as this machine is...I think it would be worth the trip...or at least inquire about it...

I think MickeyD has a video of his in motion....

Never tire of the Her Lady Visi

mickeyd's profile picture
Nor of a chance to show her off. There was another inquiry about this wringer, and others like it, being broken because of the floppy latch. On those models that's how the wringer looks in the "Release" mode, a good sign actually, since it suggests the rollers may have been released all these years, and should therefore be preserved and functional. Some wringers in the release mode look truly tragic and really broken.

A friend of mine in Baltimore has a mint square tub Maytag. His mom bought it to replace her old broken down Thor wringer. Aftrr just two loads, she decided to get an automatic. She put a plastic blanket over the Maytag and it's sat there in a cool, dry basement. I saw it and tried it out. Everything was intact and even though it wasn't used since 1973, it purred like a lost kitten found by a loving passer by. I wanted to have it shipped here but too expensive to justify the cost. I dont have his phone number but do know how to get there. I need to get his PH# and let him know somebodys interested . He told me if I wanted it, just come to get it. It is in brand new condition. No rust, no oil leaks. His mom removed the agitator off the post and laid it sideways. That's how it was when I first looked at it. I put it back on then ran it .Great wringer washer.

I always wanted an old Kenmore wringer, not even a Visi-Matic, but just like my mother had and I wrecked with my toy trucks that needed to be washed. Would rather have a toy washer than trucks but we know the story. Hers had the drain on the side of the tub. Did have a pump. Settled for a Maytag round wringer which is fine and use it a few times a year. Hopeing to put it in my storage building with water and power in the spring, if it ever gets here.

VintageK, yes check ebay, i just looked night before last they had a stainless tub SQ, Kenmore and also a square maytag with the pump. I was tempted with SQ, it was in Bourinasse (sp) Illinois. I do remember it had no bids and ended in 7 hours. It may be relisted.

This past spring (2013) I picked up a 1962 Whirlpool wringer with a straight vane agitator for $40.  It was located about 30 miles south of me, and it's a full skirted pump model.  If we were closer I'd sell it to you in a heartbeat.  I bought it to rescue it from a date with the recycler.

Surgomatic

mickeyd's profile picture

The Whirlpool version has a cooler, less weird, "more normal" --whatever THAT is, LOL !-- moniker than the Kenmore Visimatic: It's called the Whirlpool Surgomatic, and indeed has a Surgilator. Have only seen one or two pix, never in the flesh, and forget exactly what the wringer is like, although it is open like the Visi; also, the machine is full-skirted with bells and whistles similar to the Visi's.

If anyone can find a pic or if Jim can get us a pic of the one in Oneida, that would be wonderful. No one in the club has one or even had one, as far as this Wringer Man knows. Please come forth if otherwise.

May I show you fellow wringer dudes what I did to my Maytag a few weeks back, without starting a new thread?

Show us please Mike!!

I will ask Chris to send me a pic of the Whirlpool and I will post it. In fact, I may have one on my phone...will look tomorrow. It is white with a white "drain board" on the open wringer. Looks so very similar to the Kenmore. It needs a new propeller in the pump which Chris has but has not installed as of yet and a new hose. It is very clean. Not sure about the agibitator tho. Mike will know more about that than I. If I don't have pics will have some in a few days and post.

So well preserved.

mickeyd's profile picture

WOW ! Twins ! -- maybe not identical, but definitely fraternal. It's a Surgilator, although the lighting and the angle obscure the true glory.

The panel is a bit narrower. Betting that they ( the wringers) came in chrome on the TOL.

Thanks, Jim. Be nice if at some point we could get a close-up of the control panel.

I'll get the Maytag Mod pix up tomorrow.

Interesting that the control panels are more stream-lined, in the same way that the Mark 12's are more reserved and understated than the Lady K's. Consistency of Design.

If that agitator is a straight vane version, it's exactly like the one in my 1961 Whirlpool wringer.
