After 40+ years - my Maytag needs help. I pulled the front panel to investigate after it started to make some noise during agitation. There is no oil in the compartment where the wash basket is located. The oil leak is below the frame or the floor of the compartment housing. Most likely the transmission seal. Correct? With the amount of oil residing on the floor - the transmission case will need to be opened up and oil added or switched out. Feel free to correct me on my observations as I am a novice when it comes to mechanical repairs.

Anyway - I live in Omaha Nebraska and am looking for a recommendation of someone to do the repair. I figure it may be less expensive (not by much) to have it repaired than to spend $800 for new. For now I go to a local laundry and use their Speed Queens. Thanks for any help you can provide.

That sounds like the lower o-ring oil seal is leaking. Repair involves disassembling the machine to remove the transmission which then must be disassemble to replace the o-ring.

If you can find repair tech willing and able to take on the job they will likely want to replace the trans which is not available anyway, a major job but the machine is worth repairing.

Probably the easiest and cheapest way out is to collect the parts needed then find a tech to install. I'm sure one of the members here has a decent used helical drive trans they'd willing to part with, preferably one from an 80's model with the lip seal rather than o-ring.

The other necessary parts are still available such as the spin bearing and stem seal.

I would suggest you contact Greg (gansky), he lives in Omaha too and has not only a vast knowledge of Maytag repair, but a vast collection of machines along with being a truly nice guy himself.
