I needed to revise my earlier post but could not do it as a Standard Member.

I am looking to sell my 1986 GE Filter-Flo washing machine.

I’m not sure how to go about it, other than just Craig’s List. But I would rather sell to an enthusiast here if anyone is interested. When I’ve sold other things on Craig’s List I’ve had some…weird experiences. Besides the simply annoying one of people making appointments and then not showing up.

It’s a simple model, WWA5800GALWA. No buttons, just dials. See photos, attached. I have more photos I can send if anyone is interested.

It is out of balance and walks during the spin cycle: the snubbers or yoke are worn out. I don’t know enough about these things to repair it. My husband (mechanical engineer) balanced it every now and then, but he says he doesn’t have time to do any more with it, so I have ordered a new Speed Queen to be delivered next week. The Filter-Flo leaks now too, but that is just since he turned it right side up the last time, so I believe a hose just loosened somewhere.

Apart from the vibration issue it functions quite well. Control panel looks nice, no wear, all dials and functions work. Cosmetically, body is in good shape, a chip or two on the front edge, some rubbing on the side close to the laundry tub from the drain hose and the recent vibration problems A bit of rust where the control panel meets the horizontal top and a bit on the underside of the lid. The Mini Basket and Filter pan were misplaced long ago.

Kept in a first floor laundry room, not a damp basement. I think we must be pretty easy on appliances….everything else we bought at the same time (1986) is still working.

I’m in the Chicago area, message me if interested in the machine yourself. I don’t know what to ask for it; I’m not greedy, nor do I think I have a precious collectible. Enough to make it worth my while to show it and spiff it up a bit. I searched Craig’s list to get an idea but none were listed. I’m open to suggestions for pricing. My chief motivation is to give a new life to an old reliable workhorse.

You forgot to mention it is set up to use the mini basket system. Even if you don't have the basket, someone can easily obtain one off ebay. Good luck with the sale.

No frills machines do have their fans on this site.  I hope yours finds a good home.

Be sure when you get your new Speed Queen to thoroughly wipe out the tub with a rag or cloth to remove any polishing residue, and keep checking the rag to make sure you got it all -- the residue shows up as charcoal gray on the cloth, and that's where you want it, as opposed to on your first load of laundry.  Then run a max fill hot wash cycle with plenty of detergent before you wash your inaugural load.

The Speed Queen's big stainless tub will seem downright cavernous compared to that of your faithful old GE, and the machine itself will be a lot quieter, including no more whacka-whacka when the spin cycle ends.

addition to post

I can’t revise my post, or delete it and make changes. So, tecnopolis, thanks for pointing this out.

ADDITION to original post:

The Filter Flo offered has an agitator designed to accept a Mini Basket and filter pan, which can be used independently of each other. The mini basket is really handy for washing delicates or just small loads. The filter pan is great at catching lint before it goes through the whole system. You can obtain replacements on EBay. The machine does not need these to wash, however: they are just useful accessories.

washman, I bought the most basic Speed Queen model, the AWN 412. Even that has more settings than I had on the good ol’ Filter Flo. If I want an extra rinse I will just reset the dial like I did on the other machine. I don’t use fabric softener, so most of the time won’t need one.

Thanks for the tip on wiping out the tub, rp2813. Just use a dry cloth, or spray on something grease cutting?

make me an offer!

The new washer arrives on next Tuesday Feb 18. The filter flo will be hauled away if no one gets it before. Any takers?

I would not let them haul it away to be crushed. While it's nobel to offer it to the club, sometimes time constraints dictate you offer it to the general public via Craigslist. I'm sure a needy family would gladly pay you to obtain a new to them washer.

I wanted to give the vintage washer enthusiasts first crack. I'll get it posted on Craig's List.

Wiping Out The Tub

rp2813's profile picture

Yes, use something that will cut the film and residue, but nothing too caustic.  As long as you see the gray stuff on the rag, you're getting the job done.  Keep wiping things out until you're not getting any more residue on the rag. A fill with hot water and generous dose of detergent with timer set for longest agitation period should get anything you may have missed.
