I scored big time with this dishwasher. I called him and he said to come over that he just moved in there and the old folks did not use it much. He justs wants it out of his garage. It is a 1985 Kitchenaid imperial 21 and has that great 1/2HP motor motor in it.This dishwasher was not used much there was no dust on the dryer blower. Here are some pics I just took. He was updating his kitchen so I asked him if he needed a disposer and he did. When I got there and he saw the disposer we swapped even.I have been

wanting one of these for years but, they are so hard to find and when you do there crap. This is the best used one I have ever had

and it's not a half whirlpool and Kitchenaid . The dryer is metal unlike my others I have had and you can tell it's made better by

little things...

That's a TOL Superba, not an Imperial.

You got a sweet deal!

Your right it is a Superba 21. I gave him a Kitchenaid Imperial disposer well not a real one but a

I.S.E. clone that I had in the box.He did not know the difference in disposer's or cares

but, he did tell me he hates his new Whirlpool dishwasher's his wife bought.

It runs all night long and don't clean like this Kitchenaid he was loading in my truck.

I agreed and said that's why I am here.

I don't think the old couple that had this house( he moved in last month)  used this dishwasher much at all everything is to clean and not worn for

a dishwasher that is 30 years old.I love how these look with stainless steel panels in them it's a very retro design.

Great deal and yes, you will love it!

What's not to love in a TOL Kitchenaid dishwasher?
You will get spoiled by its cleaning ability but even the Custom and Imperial models worked just as well but lacked some cycle features of the Superba. Same pump and filtration system. You can't go wrong.
Biggest drawback is the single rinse. But if you use the right amount of the right detergent and rinse agent, you should not have a problem with any residue on the dishware.
Start to collect your spare parts now while there are still some available.

Let us know how it works for you.

The Daily Double

Could you modify this machine for two full after rinses?

Post# 736156 , Reply# 10   2/18/2014 at 19:25 (3,716 days old) by stevet (West Melbourne, FL)
yes and no!

while you cannot change the machine's design and add another rinse since the imer controls how many after rinses there are. The cycles have purges between segments which can be modified to add more water to them and thus spray water up on to the dishes to rinse off any soap and soil residue that might remain on the dishware.
I have done this, and I think a fe other members have tried it as well.

I have removed the flow washer in the fill valve which will allow the full force of your water system to fill the machine very rapidly. You then depend on the float switch to stop the machine from overfilling. You will also be adding up to a gallon of water to every fill segment during the cycle so your water and energy consumption will be higher. The heating portions of each segment where the timer stops advancing until the water gets to the specific temperature needed to satisfy the hold thermostats in the fill and sani-cycle. Therefore, the cycle times will be longer.

Another problem is that since the water level will now be just below the door sill on the inside of the tank, should you open the door to add an item or check on things, if you dont wait at last 5-10 seconds before latching the door and resuming whatever action the machine was doing, you will likely blow a decent amount of water out of the bottom of the door on to your floors. So again, you have to be careful and be wary for what you wish for. Also, if you ever took notice, in between washes and rinses and after a purge, the machine basically drains all the water out. If you eliminate the flow washer, then some will remain to begin the next segment since the drain interval is designed to evacuate less water.

One advantage the lower level machines with the external timer knob have over the Superba is that you can put your detergent into the prewash section, run your cycle and then go back to starting the cycle again. In this way, you can make that your main wash and repeat it to match the soil level and then let the machine progress from there to complete the cycle and all the rest of the fills will actually become rinses. I think you get the picture.

On the Superba, you can do the same thing by putting soap into the prewash cup and letting it do its thing but interrupt the cycle just before draining and hit cancel drain button. Before the timer gets to the actual drain, you can hit quick cycyle or the shortest cycle you have and then hit the light china and energy saver dry and let the unit complete the cycle and then you could restart the machine with the deterent laden water and let the selected cycle begin and you have a good wash and then multiple rinses.
If you want to control how much water goes in if only removing the flow washer, you can put a ball valve in line witht the water supply s you can vary or control the speed at which the machine fills.

Great looking machine! Congratulations on your awesome find!

Curious, does this have the Hobart 20A reversing motor, or the hammertone endbell Emerson? Either way, a great machine!

It is I think a 1984 model it has a Hobart motor in it 1/2 H.P. I took it apart and looked at everything and I just can't get over

that this dishwasher is 31 years old and it in this good of shape. There is no rust anywhere save for those brown spots on the right

side. There is two places on the rack in the bottom that I need to fix but there tiny.I have had two other machines like this.

The first one had a Emerson motor in it and so did the 2nd one but the 2nd one had the heater in a different place and the dryer/heater

was gone just a blower in it.That machine fell apart on me quick it had the same type of pump but there where alot of things that

was changed on it.I did test it and it works wonderful no leaks it was just strange that normal wash was so quick and over compared

to today.

The single final rinse was never an issue for me with my ISE Classic Supreme, which was a KA series 22 clone.  Don't lose sleep over it.

You got the last of the 100% Hobart KA dishwashers, and you can count on it for many, many years of trouble-free service.

You scored big time, Wes.

My docs

on this are dated 1988. If you go to the KA website and navigate to customer support, then documents and literature, type in your model #-- KA has the owner's manual, installation manual and the parts list available in PDF format. I have saved all three docs to my PC. Mine is model # KUDS21MSI (Monterey).

As others have said, I have no issue whatsoever with the rinsing. To me, IMHO, this is an extremely good dishwasher. For example, we cooked a pork tenderloin in the crock pot last weekend. I simply dumped the liquid in the crock when it was done, threw it in the KA, along with other incredibly dirty stuff, loaded the detergent dispensers and ran it on a "Soak/Scrub" cycle. The crock came out perfect, along with everything else! No thumb nail scrape required. I LOVE this dishwasher!

Happy Birthday tag!

Take a look on the front cross member and on the left side should be a small paper label on it with a set of numbers on it. The last 2 will be the year of manufacture and the preceeding ones will be the day of the year it was built. Of course, if the data plate says Kitchenaid div of Hobart, it was a Hobart built machine. After the sale, it was probably built initially by Insinkerator and badged as Kitchenaid in St.Joseph MO.
They kept doing the little date tag for a while after the sale.My first 21 series was a KDC-21D and it said St. Jo, MO. and it a date tag on it too. That machine is still working somewhere here in Palm Coast.
