I just purchased a 1957 Philco-Bendix Duomatic and it has yet arrive yet(purchased it from a man in Calf. and I had to have a shipping company ship it). Just wondered if anyone had one that they actually used and if it was a good machine. I've always heard bad things about the new washer/dryer machines so I wonder if they are actually practical to use. Any help would be very nice. Thanks

1957 Philco

I have a 58 Philco Bendix Duomatic, its my main machine, its wonderful, it requires no out side venting, it uses a condenser and the lint from the dryer cycle ends up in the washer lint filter, They are VERY heavy and don't move much, Good Luck and let me know how she is!
There's nothing like a Philco-Bendix Duomatic except maybe 2

I too have a "Big Bertha" Bendix combo that I use frequently. It truly is the very best of the early combination machines. Mine is a 1953-55 model but esentially the same machine as the later version like you are getting. The link is to a very-out of date picture of my Bendix, the room has changed all around it, but it's still there going strong.

Philco-Bendix got the Combo right the first time! Those are great machines and FAST! Did you snag the one on Craiglist up in San Francisco? (Just curious) I hope so, I hated to think the poor old thing went to the krusher.

gansky,

That GE is what started my interest in the automatic washer. It is the exact model that my grandmother had....and I was...uhmmmm fascinated with it. Would help her on washday. She would always rinse the clothes in the sink, then put them back into the washer and let it fill and rinse the rest of the way. Guess it was from her days using a wringer washer. She would take the clothes out of the washer after the first spin, rinse them in her laundry sink, them put them back in to finish the cycle.
That machine was fun to watch thru the whole cycle with the lid up.

Fascinating.

My mother's aunt woeld make my mother rinse the clothes in the bathtub (after a complete automatic cycle)and hang them up to dry.

uhm........ See that there timer, just push, turn, point indicator to *RINSE* and pull. (or on some old Kenmores, pull, turn push). Voila- second rinse.

I wonder if it from the female instinct that touching is *nurturing and love*. Every article of clothing must be individually touched and handled. Watch a woman load a washer in the laundromat or unload it and load the dryer. Every article, one-by-one.

It is bizarre~ I watched a friend of mom's salt a tray full of chicken drumsticks to be cooked. Both sides of each piece....... one-by-one. Hon, salt the one side of the tray, then turn them ALL over and salt the other side. Boom. Boom. Boom.

*SIGH*

I sometimes think BOTH genders have an instinctual need to play with water. Some people REFUSE to use a DW, even when it COMES with a house. The need to frolick with water, methinks.
