Is anyone awake to see these - posted 2 days ago -better not think about it too long!
No way can this be real : Ad says: " Older washer and electric dryer. Had hooked up in the basement as a back up set to the set in the laundry room but haven't used them in years. I washed and dried a load of towels in them today to make sure they still both worked and they did. Have leaked some oil from the dryer over the years but sounded and worked fine when I used it today. $50 for the pair." The PAIR for $50? check that carefully CLICK HERE TO GO TO ovrphil's LINK on Cedarrapids Craigslist This post was last edited 04/06/2014 at 00:50 |

Or maybe it was a quiet but Christmas present excited voice from NC heating up my phone. I've been offline as I made the trip to the SF Bay Area to be here to help out my parents as my dad just got his knee replaced. Doing the good son thing even though I've got more than my fill in Reno post Jacqui...
Holy tap dancing Christ! My CA/CDE 906 set! Aaarrrggghhh!!!! OMG! thud indeed! One of my two dream pairs. I've got a cde906 dryer already but have NEVER been able to find the washer. Heck, I haven't been able to find ANY 906 washer in ANY color. How the heck would I get my hands on them and over here?? RCD |

Someone got a great pair and I was always a big fan of shaded copper-tone on Whirlpool and Sears appliances, [ it was also not too bad on GE appliances ] but you can see from the posting picture how badly MT did the shading, it looks like a kid did it and to make it worse MT had too much color difference between the base color and the shading color.
This is still an incredible find, it is amazing what keeps popping up. |

And no, it's not a Cornelius Gurlitt type to stash away rare appliances. It's Brian (beekeyknee) from Columbia. I was up late Sat. night and noticed Phil's posting on the 906s at about 4:00 in the morning. I considered going to bed, but then started thinking if I did they would be gone when I got up. I immediately thought of Drew (redcarpetdrew). I scrolled down a couple of posts and there was his post. I knew he was out of striking distance but I wasn't, so I sent a text to Cedar Rapids in the morning. I was informed that no one had committed to purchasing them yet and I asked if approximately 1:00 PM would be acceptable. The lady told me that would be fine and I told her that I would be there. A bit later she send me a text and asked if I was "for real" because her phone was blowing up and she needed to take down her C/L posting. I told her that I was very much "for real" and I would send her texts along the way to keep her apprised of my progress. I arrived around 2:00 PM. She and her husband met me at a convenience store right off the highway and led me out to a nice area on the east side of town. They had me back in the drive and I unloaded my dolly. It was a good thing I brought it. The machines were down a flight of stairs to the basement. Thank goodness she brought her husband along. I don't think I could have managed without him. I've pulled machines up into my pick-up before but a flight of stairs is another story.
Once we got to the basement I began to survey the machines. They were in excellent condition for machines of that age. The washer was made in March of 1966. Not sure of the dryer's age yet. The door is duct taped shut and I haven't felt like removing it. I'm guessing around the same age as it has wire wound baffles. The porcelain drum has no perceptible wear. The drum light still works as do the panel lights on both machines. She mentioned in her C/L add that she thought the dryer was leaking oil. I suspected differently and was right. There was a giant oil slick underneath the washer of that nasty brown transmission oil Maytag used to use. The "O" ring has gone bad and it has been running down the drive tube and onto the pulley which has been slinging it around underneath the machine. I grabbed the machine to pull it out a bit and came away with a grease covered hand. By the time we got it out to my truck I was covered in the stuff.
The washer is what one would expect. Chrome topped lint filter, ribbed agitator between the fins and a tub light which still works with the lens still in place. One of the nicest things about both machines is that the control buttons are all fairly white and none of the paint is worn off. The only thing wrong is a bit of the metallic blue on the bottom half of the control panel on the washer is worn off.
The lady and her husband were both great and helped me load, secure and wrap them. I offered to pay them $40.00 for the help, they said that was too much so they took $25.00 and I was grateful to pay it. After we were loaded they said for me to follow them and they would point to the street I was to turn on to make it back to the highway. I was glad to be on the road again, as I had another 5 hour trip to make and it was nearly 9:00 PM and dark when I arrived home. After I settled in a bit I sent Drew a message to call me that evening. If he couldn't I told him to call at 6 this evening. Sure enough at 11:00 PM central time my phone rang. It was Drew. I asked him if he could guess where I'd been that day and he said he thought he knew. At first he said, "Kansas". I laughed and said, "No, try north". He thought for a second and I said try Cedar Rapids or something to that effect. And he said you're the one that got the 906's. I said yes and I want to bring them to you. He said, "To Reno"? And I said, "Yes, I want you to have them". There was dead silence for about three seconds. He seemed kind of shocked and I told him I knew he had been looking for them a long time. I didn't need or want them that badly and I wanted him to have them. I told him he could have them for what I paid for them and he began to discuss gas costs and so forth. I basically told him we could work that out later and that I didn't expect much. Mostly it would be a little vacation for me and I'd get to see some pretty country on my trip. We ended up having a great conversation which lasted for an hour and a half. I was like we were old friends. It was a lot of fun. I've really been wanting to meet another AW member and this seemed like a great way to start. Anyway, we'll be working out an itinerary in the next couple of weeks.
Phil, I'd like to thank you for posting the machines. You started it all. Much appreciated. If it wasn't for your posts we would miss out on a lot.
Don, I'm sorry I got to the machines before you did. There was no ill will intended. I still love your turquoise 806 set. A picture of them is on my desktop.
Sandy, I'm sorry you were not able to secure these machines. I know you've been looking for a set for awhile.
John, the shading on the 906 set looks better in person than it does in the picture. I'll be talking to you soon.
To everyone at AW.org. You're a great bunch of people and I look forward to meeting more of you.
Cheers,
Brian This post was last edited 04/08/2014 at 00:35 |

it's only metal and like all things, we are just visiting and essentially owning nothing in this passage of life, but ...at least there are toys and other diversions to make it fun.
This story deserves a gargantuan applause to you Brian and very impressed with your decisions - so relieved they are in an aw.org member's hands and good one's, at that. made my day...good job, Brian! (more applause) |

Congratulations and thanks for a satisfying bedtime story with a happy ending, Brian.
Fifty dollars for a pair of 906's is surely the steal of the year. Remember that Greg said you can do a lot with those buttons; the cycles are not as inflexible as some believe. Let us know how you do and what you discover. There is a truly wonderful 906 manual in the Ephemera. |

Try longer. Then another twenty seconds of just incoherent babble as my brain was desperately trying to kick back into gear after hitting one heck of a speed bump.
I had just been exchanging emails with Don telling him that I HAD NOT bought them from under him and was stressing about their welfare. (Sad, right?) Brian dropped the email bomb on me a hour or so later. That was a phone call I'll remember for a long time. After finding my voice again, I was telling him that I was floored. Floored and feeling VERY undeserving of such kindness. I still do. After having a great hour plus chat, Brian told me he would post the above so people knew how it went down. I agreed as long as I could quickly email Don to let him know what was up as I didn't want him to be possibly hurt by my telling him I hadn't picked them up and then comes the announcement that I have them, which I quickly did. I mean this when I say that no dream machine, and I mean NO dream machine, is worth screwing up a friendship. I was worried, Don. I really was. Thank you for the email telling me it was ok. I will admit that until Brian posted the above, I was trying hard not to be too excited. I'm sorry my friend but there are a few members who remember a former member here who got to be what I thought was a friend who promised me a 906 then turned out to be feeding me a story and was summarily banned for that among other things. I believed you but there was this little piece of me that... Never mind. All I can say again is thank you. It's been a very long and very bumpy road post Jacqui and I really haven't been my normal self. This is one of the kindest things I've experienced since then. Anyway, Brian won't be going home empty handed. When I heard that he'd be driving home a empty truck, I thought that unacceptable. So, I have a very early series 806 set in harvest gold that I've been saving for years. I have 72 806's in white and don't need these but didn't want to tear them apart if any other possibility existed. I'm also sure that, as a gracious (and grateful) host, I'll find a few other truck bed stuffers... Thank you. I'm still not sure what I did to be so deserving but thank you! This is one of the best things that has happened on AW in the last year, and I think that Brain should receive the AW award of the year for making it happen.
I am also very glad that these will go to Andy, when I think of all the great information and videos that you have taken the time to post over the years, getting this CA906 washer and dryer it certainly could not be going to a better place. After the most difficult period you are going through I hope this helps you and your family continue forward in Life. John. |

That's a great story and very generous of you Brian.
This is how it should be: helping other collector's out rather than competing against them. I have a similar relationship with Nathan (Brisnat81), considering we live pretty close to each other we both saw no point in outbidding each other on ebay etc as we'll both get a chance to play with each others machines. And as we have different brands we like, if someone rings me with a machine i'm not especially interested in but i know Nathan would be, i'll put them onto him. Cheers Leon |

If we had a short list of testimonials about why I love Automatic washer dot org, this would have to be near the top of the list.
This was a fun story to watch unfold. I happened to notice Phil's post within moments of its arrival. I saw the machines and had to call Andy. That's the call he referred to where I sounded like a kid on Christmas morning as I knew he had been looking for these for a LONG time, thus I have wanted them for him for a long time too. He doesn't ask for much if anything, and I have a few treasures that I use regularly that he found, so its time he got what he wanted also! Next morning I got up and went directly online to see an update. I noticed that Don had secured them. "Great!" I said to myself, "they've been installed in the club". Several of Phil's finds this past weekend wound up in the club, by the way!! At 1:47am on Sunday night/Monday morning, my cell phone rings. I keep it in the kitchen and I was upstairs. "WAS THAT MY PHONE AT 2AM?!?!?!?" I flew downstairs thinking something was wrong with the family (after last year's loss I pay more attention to late night or odd-time phone calls) and it had been Andy...immediately proceed to play voiemail...call Andy back, he's in San Fran taking care of his Dad. He's riding around in the car with the top down at 11pm trying to process the day's events and absorb the generosity, etc. So Brian, I heard it from Andy when it was fresh --- you made the Man's day/week, etc and that's really awesome. He was completely stunned. To offer to take the machines out there is even better. Many major kudos to you!! You'll have to keep us posted Andy on the status of these. I'll try not to nudge... G |

I unwrapped Drew's machines this afternoon and was inspecting them more closely. I aimed to take daytime pictures, but by the time I got around to it, it was dark, so they are flash. But they're still nice photos. I got permission from Drew to post a few. I thought he might like to see what he's in for.

I think the first load will be the clothing I just had to change. In all my dreams, I don't think I could have wished them to look better! No fair photoshopping the pics like that. Brian, you should have looked around that basement because you left the boxes they just came out of behind!
Oh my goodness! Dare I make a 'sister wife' reference here as I have someone here just as eagerly awaiting her companions. Brian, again, I cannot thank you enough! RCD This post was last edited 04/10/2014 at 04:24 |

The panel shots--OH MY LORD IN HEAVEN !!! The original CL photo gave no clue as to the really brand new condition of these machines.
Are there any new details regarding how these gems remained so pristine?
Even the tiny shriveled raisin heart of Homer Simpson's boss, Mister Dithers, would beat hard seeing your generosity.
With beloved Terry and Kelly gone, I always wondered who would become the next living saint of Aworg. No more wondering. IT'S YOU, DUDE!!! This post was last edited 04/10/2014 at 22:33 |

John, on that you are wrong.
The original 906s used the same Mallory timer as the 902s with the separate advance mechanism.
I looked it up in the service manuals and "Let's Talk Service" bulletins and according to the factory documentation the changeover to the Kingston timer took place in August of 1968. The change from the wire-wound baffles to the "bar baffles" in the HOH dryers occurred in November of 1968 at the factory. |

Hi Mark,
The serial #'s are BF on both machines - March 1966. I haven't looked "under the hood", but I suspect it's the the timer with the advance motor on one end with the long metal bar that extends into the timer. I remember an old post with a picture of one of these timers a long time ago, but I've never seen one myself. I just remember a complicated looking gadget with wires going everywhere. That's all I'm going to say on the subject. I'll leave the rest up to Drew to post during his restoration. Thanks for asking. Michael - I didn't ask the lady much about the history of the machines. I mostly wanted to get them loaded and get back on the road. Brian |

Thanks Mark for the correction, I guess that I have never seen one of the first A906s. My old boss at the MT Home Appliance Store where I worked had an Avocado A906 which he claimed was the first of the A906s, now when I think about it now it could not have been the first because avocado would not have been available on the first A906s.
This is one of the things that I love about this site is that I often learn something new. John L. |

The simple answer is: Asperger's Syndrome.
I have been painter, draughtsman and sculptor since I got outta the crib (according to my Mother, I was quite the Abstract Expressionist, while still in the crib).
When I discovered computer graphics, I started drawing everything I wanted to have with MacPaint. When I discovered there were other people out there like myself who found vintage appliances interesting, it took off. I found this site doing nostalgia and "grief" research for drawings of washing machines and dishwashers that we had owned through the years. I needed to see pictures of them to correct and fill in gaps of the images I was doing strictly from memory. I did most of the drawings that you've seen with a wonderful, now-extinct, program called Freehand Graphics. When I switched computers recently, the new system couldn't run that program(probably intentional on the part of Adobe). Now I do the drawings with Adobe Illustrator because it was able to translate the old documents into its format, which is very powerful and I'm still learning how to control.

The 906's are the subjects for a damn good artist. At least they held still for you. Next picture for you to do will be the one of me laid out cold on the floor after laying eyes on them for the first time. Between the teaser pics and the picture you did, I'm just a huge ball of nervous excitement!

Hi Ken
It's 7.47am Sunday morning here, so will get some pics of the Wilkins white Power fin sometime this morning for you and post, so keep a look out for them.
Have always been very impressed with your graphics, a real talent there!
And the Queensboro bridge: well, you guys can claim bragging rights, I reckon Brisbane copied it considering the Story Bridge wasn't built till 1940. Can you climb your bridge? There are regular climbs up the Story Bridge, I did with a friend a couple of years ago...
Cheers Leon |

Hi Brian,
Yes, Maytag domestic machines were sold in Australia from about 1980, starting with the '10' series till only recently with the Atlantis and Performa models and VERY briefly with the WP cloned 'Centennial' models.
Unfortunately, Maytag have disappeared altogether from the Oz market and I've heard Whirlpool will soon be going too!
For the Oz market, the 10 and 12 series washers were limited to the A110,210 and A112, 212 and 512. It was only when the Orbital machines appeared from about 1990 did we get higher spec models such as the A/LAT9800 and LAT9824 and sales began to gather momentum.
By this time, Maytag and 'Kleenmaid' (re-badged Speed Queen's) were pretty well above in terms of quality from the Australian domestic machines at the time.
Cheers Leon

Baffle plate? Did the early Powerfin agitators have baffle plates on them? I thought those went away with the Bakelite agitators. Now I'm really baffled! Would this type of agitator pump more water than the standard Powerfin? This post was last edited 04/12/2014 at 21:09 |

David,
The water goes down the ridges between the fins and comes out the four holes along the bottom edge of the agitator skirt corresponding to the ridges on the top. I don't know about it pumping more water or not, but it forces it to the outside edge of the agitator instead of releasing it at the bottom of the barrel. B. |

Every single piece of that agitator looks pure Iowa, except for that removable (!) chrome cap! The lint filter cylinder looks to be a hybrid of the old style grafted onto the new style. I have to wonder what the contractual arrangements for manufacturing were like for these machines. Makes me think that all the parts for this agitator were molded here, sent there except for the cap??? Doesn't really matter, but I have to wonder. Are the tubs Stainless Steel because the machines heat the water?
You're right Leon, the Storey bridge is overall, a prettier and more stable structure than the Queensborough which is actually NOT a true cantilever design, but the Q is my home-town span (built in 1917). Did Bradley build the Storey bridge? |

Hi Ken
Maytag had no knowledge what so ever that Wilkins Servis were building their machines in Australia, until after Wilkins Servis went bankrupt in 1978.
The story goes that another Australian whitegoods manufacturer obtained the rights to build Maytag cloned machines in Australia under their own name (I don't know the name of the company). However, before they could do so, they went bankrupt. Wilkins Servis subsequently bought that companies name and with it (so they believed) the rights to build Maytags as Australian Wilkins Servis machines.
So, all parts of the machines were built here. During this time, Malleys Whirlpool Australia used to do porcelain enamelling for not only themselves but also for Simpson and Wilkins Servis who didn't have their own enamelling centres. However, Whirlpool decided to increase the price so Simpson went elsewhere and Wilkins Servis decided to try something different: and that's how the Stainless Steel bowl came about. It not only gave Wilkins Servis a 'point of difference' but they were also able to save costs by introducing plastic outer tubs with the introduction of the SS bowl.
According to my repairer contacts, Maytag only found out Wilkins Servis were making their machines when a rep from Maytag was here in Oz and saw a Wilkins Servis machine in a workshop: and was pretty shocked apparently. But, they couldn't do anything about it as Wilkins Servis had gone bankrupt by this time.
As for our Story Bridge, no, it was not designed by Bradley, but devised by Professor Roger Hawkin.
A pic of one of my Wilkins machines with the plastic outer tub: I've recently retro-fitted a SS bowl into another Wilkins machine with the enamel outer tub.
Cheers Leon

These had an additional baffle plate on the bottom like the Bakelite [ lint filter ] agitators they replaced, this additional baffle plate made the pumping action through the lint filter MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE, this BP system also made for a much more effective detergent dispenser and also gave concentrated fabric softener more area to dilute itself in so the chance of clothing spotting was reduced.
The only down-side of these two=piece agitators was there was not a positive water seal between the two major parts. Because of this a positive air-pocket was not always maintained it could allow water to surround the agitator shaft and seal area, which resulted in many more seal failures in washers with two-piece agitators. { MT stated that this was the reason for the change in agitator design ] The interesting thing about all this is I got a long letter from an AW member a few month's ago. He had recently gotten a fully restored mid-70s A806 washer that replaced his 1967 KM BD washer that had a roto-swrirl agitator. He was very disappointed that the MT PFA was destroying his clothing, so he decided to try one of these older two piece PF agitators that he had been given by another friend of mine. He said the difference was amazing with the four extra fins, better clothing turn-over and MUCH LESS CLOTHING DAMAGE. His conclusion was that MT had changed to make the agitator cheaper to build, which I am sure is true but I also think that the newer one piece agitator would make the washer more durable. I will be very interested in what you think of this different agitator Andy once you get this washer. |

John is spot on when it comes to the two piece agitators not holding the air pocket. Not only was there a possibility of seal failures, but the agitators themselves are a bear to get off once water encroaches the spline drive. The two piece poly agitators I've come across came out via a hacksaw.
That's why I was so surprised this agitator came out. It's as if the washer was never used! Drew - congrats again. What an amazing find. Ben |

Tim,
If I remember correctly, the lady I bought them from said they hadn't been used much. She also mentioned moving a wringer washer out of the basement. Maybe the lady of the household preferred the wringer machine, I don't know. Also the tub light still works. An indication that they weren't used too hard. After I got them home it wasn't hard to tell that they were "low mileage". The cabinets were in good shape and the agitator pulled off without too much trouble. I believe it hadn't been removed before. The drive shaft wasn't rusted and the spline shines. The drain hose is still soft. All indications of low usage. B. |

A BeeKeyKnee's Holiday... LOL!
You lucky guy! One of the best places to experience your first Uni, too. My little, humble shop doesn't hold a candle to that! I'll have a small but fun bit of machines there and I am looking forward to having a little Halo of Heat 101 with you. Check out the new 906 and give you some hands on tear down time for when you tear into your own. Best way to learn is to get in and get your hands dirty! Ohh, almost forgot. You'll have access to a huge library of service and parts manuals and a photocopier. It'll be fun! RCD |

Greg,
Thank you for a wonderful time. I felt really comfortable in your home and I never imagined I would get to see the things I saw last night. Such interesting machines. I went down and talked to the lady at the desk and she helped me to connect to the Wi-Fi. Now I don't feel so alone and vulnerable that I can be with my AWO friends. To tell the truth, thinking of my long journey ahead frightens me a bit. I have to get the machines to Reno w/o incident, but the weather forecast is good and the lady at the desk is keeping an eye on my truck. She' s really nice. I'll probably gain more confidence as I go. Going to bed now. Talk to you guys tomorrow, most likely. B. |

That's like an appliance lover's trip to the holy land. I would need the better part of a month to truly appreciate what John has there. Get my hands dirty, fill a few camera memory cards, learn a few things, and enjoy good friends while I'm at it.
Oh, and sneak a empty Uhaul in there while he's not looking... One of these days, John. One of these days... RCD |

Brian, I know those 906's are in safe hands. You have no idea what your kindness means to me. I am jazzed to finally meet you in person and I'll make sure you'll have a good time here. Just be prepared to get your hands just a bit dirty since I want to make sure you're better prepared to redo your 806's. The shop may not be as big or cool as, say, John's but it's home.

I made it from Omaha to Rock Springs, WY. I left Omaha at noon and got to Rock Springs by 10:00 PM. So I got here 40 min. sooner than my itinerary said. The speed limit is 75 but everyone pushes it about 10 miles per hour out here. No problems at all. My truck rides better with nearly 500 lbs of Maytag in the bed. Helped me a lot with the wind.
Drew, this is the half way point, so I'll probably make it to Reno by tomorrow night. I'll call you when I get there and if you're up to it or want to we could unload them tomorrow night instead of Sunday morning and they'll be ready to work on first thing. It's up to you. Actually, my travel time tomorrow is 9 hours and 40 min instead of today's time of 10 hours and 40 min, so I may get there sooner than I think. Let me know what you think. B. |

Well, maybe not THAT easy... LOL!
Let's see when you arrive and figure it out then. Don't push yourself on my account, please. Enjoy the drive. Enjoy the sights. Most importantly, enjoy yourself! Weight helps hold your truck to the road, huh? Well, I'll make sure you have traction on the return trip. How do you feel about belt drive Kenmores? RCD |

John McWhorter (aka Oldskool) also qualifies as a "Member of the Year". Brian and John have both gone above and beyond to pick up and deliver dream appliances to fellow club members. The link is to the saga of Sandy's GE range which John picked up in Wausau and delivered to Waterloo as part of a long trip to pick up other appliances. I almost feel like I am not worthy of posting this, but the story is too exciting not to. Have been a member a long time, almost 10 years. Yes, the "long trip" stories are plentiful here. This one of course is special to me because it's about Maytag's, and low mileage 906's at that. I wonder Drew, how you are going to "re-pay" Brian? Lol! I read something about belt drive Kenmo's......... Better be a holy grail Frigidaire or something. Will keep checking this posting out until it drifts off, it's been an exciting one. Good luck with your new machines! And, Brian, how many miles? You're an awesome dude. Yep, AWO member of the year award, fo sho.

Steven,
I set the trip meter before I left for Cedar Rapids two weeks ago and it now reads 2396. Subtract about 30 miles that I drove around in Columbia before I left for Reno and you get 2366. Then add another 1780 or so for me to return home and you get 4146 miles. I'll post final mileage when I get home. Drew and I spent the day together working on the machines. We worked on the washer first, then the dryer. I got my Halo of Heat lesson 101. The dryer's pretty much finished except for a few details. The washer will take longer, of course. I'm sure Drew will have them in top form in a few weeks. That's all for now. I check out tomorrow at noon for my journey back. It's 1:45 in the morning here. B. |

frightens me."
I wish I had seen this. It would have helped me to know I had a fellow brother out there in a similar circumstance and maybe I can help you now. I left Wednesday for a solo six hour one-way road trip, and I was anxious because this was my first trip in four years. At the end of the first very edgy hour, I thought I had left the valve open on my ancient KM dryer that has a faint internal leak in the ignition, and the whole notion of my house exploding and all my beautiful machines blown to smithereens was just so overwhelming I started to laugh at my fears, and then I relaxed. The trip home today was a breeze as I'm sure yours will be, so good luck.
I'm so glad you got to meet Greg, one of the unsung humble heroes of Aworg. I haven't gotten to Omaha--met him elsewhere-- but he has invited me as I'm sure he'd invite any us, and I hope some day to get there and visit him and his treasures.
I love the expression of subtle awe on your face on first viewing the wonders of the Unimatic. Nice catch, Greg!!!
This is a great saga and I'm happy you've shared it with us; it lifts up the heart.
Sorry about the bikini reference. Have seen your name name so many times and being slow on the double meaning thing, I thought in a moment of insight many years later that you meant bikini. But now I see it's your name. Satisfied that I finally got the sexy joke way too late in the game and blew it. Forgive me.
Godspeed, Brian, on your return. |

I made it all the way from Wendover, NV to my parent's house in Sweet Springs, MO, a little "wide spot in the road" half way between Kansas City and Columbia. I left Wendover on Tue. at 1:00 PM Mountain Time and arrived at my parents today at approximately 11:00 AM Central Time. I slept a long time at The Rainbow Casino Hotel in Wendover, so I just drove all night and part of the morning and slept from noon until 7 this evening. I'm going to go back to bed soon, as I am still tired. I'll go on to Columbia tomorrow.
Christina, I'll post what Drew sent back with me when I get home. B. |

LOL..... the poor mom was probably wondering what the heck happened with this crazy whirpool washing machine. and the kids were probably sitting back, getting the biggest kick ever, watching her go crazy, trying to figure out what was wrong with her washing machine!!! that poor woman probably hated whirlpool washing machines after that incident left her scratching her head!!! |

Hi ectofix - thanks and welcome. I take responsibility for the title - "wake the dead"...as it is such a rare occasion to find a set of 906's in this condition, no less. I picked the title to reflect a rare moment of discovery and for all here who collect, an expression that says these were special.
The USA has regional difference in humor and expressions. Since you're here in the south, you may have heard of the expression (an old one, from what Geogian's tell us)..."it's so good you want to slap your grandma" So, I suppose that would have worked "Found ! So Good!!...you want to slap your grandma". But, I'd probably have more frowns. My mom, who was English-Scottis, used to say something about waking the dead if a big event occurred. Hope you hang out a while...as you already see, good people and interesting place. I might say, it could be even...therapeutic. :-) Phil |

Phil, I absolutely adored my grandmother Margaret Crotty, and she may have loved more than anyone else in my entire life.
AND YET
I laughed out loud with a full belly wiggle when I read: "It's so good you want to slap your grandma."
Learned a lot about Southern humor from your fellow Georgian Flannery O' Connor, but you've got one on her with slapping' Grammy.
Thank you. |

I spent yesterday afternoon with my parents and yesterday evening with my sister, brother-in-law and Mother. At my sister's we talked and laughed about old times and new. My sister is so funny and when we get together it's almost always non-stop laughter. My mom and I left there about 10:00 PM or so and I went back to her house to get a couple of things I forgot. I got back to Columbia around 12 mid-night and got a good night's sleep. Then went to the chiropractor today and I'm starting to feel like my old self. A good dinner and another good night's sleep and I'll be back to my usual routine. It sure is good to be home.
Christina, you asked to see some pictures of what Drew sent home with me, so here they are. I was going to use these to fix up my white 806's, but they're so nice I really hate to do it. And they're an exact set too (serial # SB). Both made in Jan. of 1972. I guess I could have the white cabinets powder coated, switch the model/serial labels and the best of all the parts combined, but of course the labels won't accurately reflect the machines then. So many dilemmas. He also gave me a few parts for my restorations. |

I have to agree with you Brian. These are far too nice to use for parts. The cabinets look like all they need is a good polishing and they'll look new. You just don't find original paint this nice very often. Thanks for sharing and welcome back home.

All covered back up until I can decide what to do. OK Drew, you can take it from here. I'm done, except for a few pictures I took on my trip. I'll start another thread about these machines later.
I almost forgot. Trip meter reads 4143 miles. Round that down for the driving around I did between the time I picked up Drew's machines and the time I got home. I'm going to make a guess and knock off 143 and make it an even 4000 miles. I think that's pretty close. This post was last edited 04/25/2014 at 23:34 |

Christina,
They do look pretty nice, but to run them on a regular basis they will need some TLC. Louie, I mentioned somewhere (don't remember exactly) that I'm going to try my hand at repainting some of these old buttons. I'll go to an artist supply store and match the paint and get a fine tipped artist brush. I have this contraption that has a suction cup base, alligator clip arms and a magnifying glass. I'll put the button in the device and give it a go. But I don't have to do this right away to fix this machine. I have extra switches with good buttons already. I just want to see if I can do it. Congratulations on a very successful trip Brain and the harvest gold 806s look great, I always love to have a particular appliance in the most popular color of the time period they were made, and if you are talking 1972 appliances HG was the new cool color [ white does not count ].
The motor in your new 806 is actually a GE motor, it was the first thing I noticed when you posted the picture with the front off, the WH motors were a gold lacquered color and were crappy motors [ Using WH motors was one of the biggest mistakes Maytag made during the 1970s in building washers and dryers ] Otherwise the 1970s were the best period for Maytag Automatic Washers in terms of reliability. Brain now that you are a seasoned appliance transporter you should make a trip to Washington DC, we are only 1100 miles away, hope to talk to you soon, John. |

Hi John,
Didn't realize it was a GE motor. It looks like the same motor that's in the Westinghouse Laundry Equipment Electric Motor Service Manual that I downloaded off of Ephemera. The motors in Drew's machines look the same. Anyway, it looked different than the square Emerson motors that I'm used to seeing. Thanks. Walter, The letters on Maytag buttons are painted on the surface. I guess that's why they wore off easily. B. |

I really enjoyed the photos - one of these days, I'll be heading out west again - and may try to re-trace the old steps I took in 1970 (part of the way was Route 66). Cute Prairie Dog. Reply #223 - that iron rich rock strata was cool looking. Wendover Will - love that sign! I like the old road artifacts that are still around and being used.
It's good you weren't out now, with all the storms sweeping the south...timing is everything and so is stamina. Phil (those were Prairie Dogs...but some do call them ground squirrels) |

MT added these built-in CVs to their washers in the 90s and some time into the 90s when they were discontinued due to extra cost.
The CVs saved MT warranty costs associated with washers overflowing when the washers drain hose was in a slow draining sink where the water would either be sucked back into the machine or would siphon back.
These DCVs also eliminated performance problems where the end of the drain hose was below the water level in the washer which could result in water siphoning out of the machine.
