Yep...

Especially the TVs with the round CRT from the 1950s. Later sets go for much less.

Pic Tubes replaced!

I remember in the 60s early color sets had pic tubes replaced with the rare earth phospher pic tubes without the safety glass on them.My 1956 ctc5 color set still has the 21axp22a metal pic tube dated aug 13 1956 still in it and still very bright. My set though needs recapping,i watch it some still has good color though.Mine cost 795 in56 its called the Dartmouth model, very Danish looking.Ive had it now for 42 years.I got it when I was 19.

GREAT THREAD LOUIE.....

newvista58's profile picture
I, as you can tell from my profile pic am a BIG
Vintage Audio / Visual fan. Those "Roundie" color
RCA's are Awesome. Everything appears to be in
"Technicolor".

They are Great Sets, but do need to be kept up.
As with anything make sure dust is blown out,
and try to put a cooling fan on the back, or
underneath if there is a ventilation screen for
the chassis. It will make a big difference in
removing heat from the inside.

Yes. #18 is a Newer Tube. Good Eye. That is the
label of '70s Tubes and the Seller does state it
is a '71 Colorama in his description.

Thanks again Louie. Keep 'em coming. Of course
this make you an "Enabler" you know / LOL.

Louis

Muntz...

Was known in old time TV shops as The Gutless Wonder!!!LOL, I know all the younger set thinks that these new flat screens are the stuff, but If you ever see a properly adjusted round tube in proper "Dim" lighting, it is the most natural lifelike color ever.

What exactly do you mean by Muntz being known as a Gutless Wonder? That it did a great job with few innards? Or that it was anything but great?

I've read that Muntz was a cheap TV in it's day because of the quality of the components used. How this one survived this long is a "wonder" all it's own.

Same here, as newvista58(Louis) - love the thread, you always find interesting things, as well, Louie.

I'll be absent for more than a week, as we do our annual trip to Michigan. I don't have a truck, or I'd stop along the way, probably -lol!

Yeah, the vintage color tv sets are getting more expensive in certain markets. People have high expectations of anything they can slap the word, "vintage" onto, even if the item is bedraggled and begging for burial.

Phil

YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT THE WORD "VINTAGE" PHIL...

newvista58's profile picture
As soon as that word is attached to any object,
it changes everything and raises the stakes,
whether it's warranted or not.

The truth is that with the Audio / Visual
items, they are only worth what someone
is willing to pay for them. Someone has
to really love a certain TV, etc. for what it
is, as alot of these do not have mass appeal,
even amongthe Vintage collectors, at large.

They can ask what they want for it....Doesn't
mean they'll get it.

Hey Where's Justin / CountryFord. I thought you
might Like this thread too :)

Louis - no biggie, I'm trying to get this "compartment" organized for the present herd of items we kept after selling off alot of other furniture, etc.

#46 is nice, but no way do I have room for a big unit. If I buy something that big, I'd rather have a tv/stereo combo...which are becoming scarcer to find, in good shape. I don't need the tv, but just the nostalgic vibes from it(my dad bought a big Zenith in 1964, walnut am/fm stereo - color tv ...wished he had kept it. Solid heavy beast, but sounded great. Oh well. I'll get there, Louis - thank you and I'm stlll lookin' for that Easy.

I've never seen a Magnavox Hi Fi with a built-in clock. Perhaps a little overpriced but very nice shape. Probably another easy turntable fix. Of course it's not mid 60's. $195 in Madison.

I agree, that's interesting. I wish the seller had more info - what model, year, etc. I like the storage area - my Maggie doesn't have any room for records. I payed $50, though, and it didn't have a clock...but I like my cherry finish better...though, all these older units are neat.

Post# 766290 , Reply# 53   6/27/2014 at 02:53 (3,562 days old) by tolivac (greenville nc)

Think the "Clock" Magnavox is more like from the mid 50's then 60's.Never seen one with the clock.Seems like you could use it like a clock radio?-Or perhaps have a record pre-Q-ed on the TT and have it start playing at a preset time.NEAT if that is how it worked.Recognize the Biamp power amp below the speaker-may be a coaxial speaker must be a tweeter in the large speaker.-Woofer coax mounted tweeter-speakers like that common in those early days of Hi-Fi.

Magnavox electronics installed in a custom cabinet. I assume this was not a factory model since Magnavox was still using sliding tops in the mid 1960's (tuner looks to be 1967 vintage.) 8 feet long, it makes a statement in a nice contemporary cabinet. $399 in Fresno.

For 23 bucks even I would buy that-not bad for that price-works pretty good-remember those front screen CRT projectors from the 70-80's.Yes,for the best results you had to watch in a completly dark room. The lighted room they show with people stting in front of the screen-well you wouldn't be able to see the picture!

Tolivac - it's similar here, but...they're out there, but no where as abundantly available in other states and cities.

"The Fisher" is really going to need a new grill cover-visit to a fabric store.And---Why do these sellers like to "pose" the arm on an empty platter for the TT shot??This endangers what stylus you have. Will have to deduct from the 200 price for a new grill cover cloth and possibly a new stylus for the TT.Than there is the issue of tubes and caps-maybe dried out speaker replacement-rebuild.So that 200 buck price is getting chopped down!
Love that GE TV set--"locomotive" isn't the word for that!!You would need a locomotive to move it!!All aside--pretty neat-bet lots of Leave it to Beaver,Mickey Mouse Club and other oldies watched on that set.

That jet vision is wicked cool!

The Motorola in reply 71 had also been listed on eBay for a bit. I had been watching it, but the seller was asking too much for the work it needs.

rare tv/radio/phono cabinet from 40s - $265

ovrphil's profile picture
Said to belong to Victor Mature - ad reads:
"This is a very rare stereo cabinet that you probably won't see again. The sweet lady I bought it from in Arizona said that her Aunt and Uncle bought it from Victor Mature (yes, the famous actor) when he was in need of money (for a move to make himself a movie star, perhaps?)
Anyways, I was looking at her house to buy when I saw it and fell in love with it, and she told me the story about it. I called her days later and asked if she would sell it to me, and when the price became right she agreed.

I haven't plugged it in, and she hadn't either since inheriting it. It looks to be in very good shape, and has lots of extra tubes and a phono stylus. There is even a hand written note about different channels or tubes or something and the original lay out which is in the pictures. It has a nice back that goes on very easily, I took it off for the pictures. The door for the t.v. is accordion style. All the knobs are original. The wood is beautiful, although the pictures don't show it.

The T.V. measures 6 1/2 X 8 1/2
It is 22" deep to the ends of the knobs.
It is 35" wide.
Its height is 3' 10".

I know this will cost a bit to get it running again (if it doesn't work), but just think about this piece being passed down for generations, or think of it as an investment, someone would definitely pay a heck of alot more if it were working.

I do have the other knob for it.

The only damage is in the trim where the door opens to store albums, as shown in the picture but it doesn't detract from the coolness of the piece.

It even has the original decals.

I have lots of other cool things for sale:

LA area is good Hi-fi console hunting grounds!!Too bad its so far from me-and I don't think USAir would let me carry a console back on their AirBus flight to and from LA out of Charlette-then to and from Greenville.

Looks like it didn't sell at $2499 plus $125 shipping. But what a history of restoring and selling small vintage tv sets. Just look at the variety sold..very cool.
