Id appreciate any info anyone could give on this GE DW as far as how well it performed. And about when it was produced.

Thanks

Looks like an early 80s model to me, but our Canadian-made ones were sometimes a year or two behind in terms of style!  It reminds me of our family's second dishwasher - a 1978 'Contessa' Potscrubber portable.  Does this have the 'power shower' on the top of the tub?

I've heard lots of bad things about these machines, but we got nearly 30 years of solid performance out of ours (and even then it was sold off when my father sold his house).  Admittedly we were leaving behind an impeller-wash dishwasher, so we were floored by how well it cleaned.  The 'Power Scrub' cycle did a number on the lasagne dishes we couldn't even fit in the ol" Viking top-loader.

Is there as a reason for that protruding panel inside the top of the dishwasher?

It's a Hotpoint with a GE name on it.  I didn't like mine that came with my 1984 house and replaced it with the GSD1200 PotScrubber, which cleaned a heck of a lot better--almost no comparison in results.

This DW was really from the HP side of GE, they were ok but the higher end all plastic tub GE DWs of the early 1980s were much better performers and less leak prone.

The reason I asked was because I found it for sale for $5.00. Ad said working condition. But if its junky then its not even worth $5.00 or the gas to get it.

It has the performance of a D&M DW with a little better build quality and reliability, but there are diffidently better DWs out there if you want a daily driver that really works.

My friend's parents bought this around 1986-1988. They eventually built it in but I have no idea if it's still in use since they sold their house. The manual is still online on the GE website. The model is GSC702

This was my first dishwasher!

I bought that exact model! at Conn's back in 1985. That GE did a fine job as long as I loaded it properly. Pyrex casseroles stayed new looking. I used Cascade and sometimes Electrosol.

I baked cakes for friends and relatives and with the money earned I bought a KitchenAid K45 for 185, the GE dishwasher for 400.00 and an small Kenmore upright freezer for 300. The dishwasher was given to my mother when I moved to place having a built in dishwasher a MOL Sears having two level wash, after roto racks were discontinued. I still have the mixer and freezer. The dishwasher was built in at my sister's house after her's died in the house she bought (it was a Sears first generation Ultra Wash model)

If you need a dishwasher, for $5, hard to go wrong here.

These were ordinary lackluster machines but if you happened to luck into a good sample model, they could be quiet and decent performers. I happen to prefer this Hotpoint-style upper rack to the standard GE version which was always sub-par IMHO. The presence of a rinse-aid dispenser leads me to believe there is a Power-Shower up there, but that is no guarantee.

Not really in need of a DW. I watch on CL for portable units thinking I want one just to play with. Its easy to drag more "stuff" home even when I dont need it. Many of us here know what thats about.

This model is a good performer from my experience.  The built-in version was in our house when we bought it in 1998.  It served us well until 2002 when the pump failed.  It was a bit of a pain to load because of the tower, but nothing we couldn't work around.

It's a mitzvah to give a home to a homeless appliance. If it does not work out, most can usually be donated.

I would hazard a guess that the raised panel was the baffle for the steam vent.
