Isn't there someone looking for a woodtone brown fridge? This might be it!

This one is within striking distance from me.  It seems like a really good one, the hinges are on the right (aka correct) side, and it's very, very tempting.

Given the low ball opening bid and short duration

launderess's profile picture
Of auction my guess is sellers just want the things gone. Otherwise they will go to the curb for scrap methinks.

If they are in your neck of the woods why not go for them? Though I'd clarify from the seller if the auction includes everything shown in pictures or just the fridge.

Worse comes to worse you probably could move on what you don't need/want.

Speaking of who I thought of

when I saw this, earlier...Ralph, isn't it nice? The first time I looked at this I thought of you - yes/no/maybe?

I think that this color presents very well in this fridge design...no matter who decides to buy it.

Yeah, sometimes a low starting bid is an indication that the seller is confident bidding will go through the roof, but for an item like this I'm not so sure.

The "just want it gone" scenario would be beneficial, but why ebay?   Maybe the sellers truly have no idea how much to ask for it.

I can't find this fridge on SF Bay Area craigslist, which should eliminate scrappers from the mix for the time being.

I've messaged and requested dimensions.  We'll see where this goes.

One day to go through the roof? I haven't seen it either, in CL. after using a couple CL search engine tools(they don't always show what one expects to find, anyways). Good luck, Ralph.

Model BG-15TD Refrigerator

If anyone here owns this model, can you provide the dimensions?  I'm mainly concerned about width.

That refrigerator looks more contemporary than it really is. It's very nice looking indeed. Haven't seen that color before, either.

Allen--You're so right...

The one on a Texas CL listing a little while ago was even more contemporary in its brushed chrome. I hope Ralph gets this woodtone one--San Leandro is a very quick trip from SF so what an absolutely stellar shot at owning this!

Ralph--Dimensions forthcoming

I just ran across them last night and didn't write them down. I *think* the width is either 31" or 32"...pretty much same as Frigidaire Custom Imperial of the same vintage.

Allen, thanks for the approximate width.  Here's what the seller has advised:

30 1/2 wide, 24 1/2 deep without handle, 26 1/8 with, 71 high

Same footprint as my '57 Combo, but taller.  This means I'd be able to store long neck beer bottles on an articulated shelf.  I don't have enough height in the '57 to store tall items on the rotating shelves, but luckily I like Modelo, and those bottles just fit.

1959 was GE's first year for Frost Guard.  I can't recall if these models used hot gas defrost or not.  Being an early model, I think this one might use the hot gas system, which IIRC per John L. is more reliable than an electric heating element.

Yep, the GE 13-foot and 15-foot models from this time frame were the same footprint; the difference was a larger freezer drawer on the bigger model, plus the "glamour" trim on the freezer drawer of the bigger one. GE obviously carefully designed both of these TOL bottom-mount Combinations to have as much parts commonality as possible.

P.S.: If you get this, have fun moving it! I suggest an appliance dolly, at least one helper, a back brace and hernia insurance. :)

It's just Appliance Karma. The distance at which an appliance is located rises in proportion to the desire of the collector.

We all live with it. Sometimes it can be overcome, many times you're just left with a story about The One That Got Away.

@JamesClark

While it would be wonderful if all our vintage wish list appliances were right next door, that rarely is the case. This is coming from a person who has had all but one of their appliances shipped/delivered from distances ranging from one state over to across the country (California to New York).

Sometimes you just have to do what is required and arrange shipping. At least the set in question was on eBay which takes care of payment. All that is required then is to arrange collection, crating/packing and then shipment.

It may be worth your while to begin investigating some of the various shipping services used by members (Youcrate, Craters and Freighters, U-ship, etc...) to get an idea of costs involved.

Another option is to rely upon the kindness of strangers (in this case members), when something pops up locally in their area. Failing that depending upon how badly you want something the last option is to hit the road and fetch it yourself. As you can read in the archives many members have driven across one, two or more states to collect things for their collections.

Hey Mikey!

rp2813's profile picture

OK, that's out of the way.

I've been waiting quite a while for one of these bottom mount Frost Guard GE's to show up near me.  I like the styling on the early Frost Guard models, but would be happy with a later one, as long as it still had the articulated shelves, and was any color except coppertone.

The right fridge will come your way eventually.

Looks like someone else is going to end up with this fridge.  Considering I'll need to rent a truck to pick it up, I've placed my max bid accordingly.  I fully expect to get sniped on this item at the end because I don't intend to get carried away by a bidding war.

More power to the seller for finding the fridge a good home instead of letting a scrapper at it.

1959 GE Frost Gaurd Ref

combo52's profile picture
This would diffidently be a hot gas defrost unit, the big weak area for these refs were compressors that failed early, good news is that it has surly been replaced by now. This ref would likely use a fair amount more power to run than your current one.

John, thanks for the information.  I was fairly sure this fridge would use more energy than my current '57, but at least the defrost cycle won't involve an electric heater.   My main concern is the cold control.  It looks identical to the failure-prone ones GE started using a couple of years earlier.  I had to replace the control on the '57.  Maybe the cold control on the '59 also failed and has since been replaced.  That would be a good thing.

This auction was still at <$1 very late last night, hmmmmm.

Oh, I don't think it's a member, but if it is, they must want it pretty badly because transport is going to be costly.  I doubt it's another local member competing with me, but I also didn't make any statement in my posts above that indicated I was in fact bidding.

But yeah, late last night I began wondering if I could end up paying only 99c for the thing.

We'll know soon enough how this will play out.  Auction ends in less than two hours.

Im interested in your comment concerning the cold control being failure prone. Do you know what year GE started using that control? Im wondering if my 55 Combination has the same control. Its mounted inside the fridge and the dial is different compared to the 59. Would that indicate it being an older design? Was the control moved to the front position when it was changed to the new design?

Ken, I think '56 or '57 may have been the first year for the type of (up front) cold control pictured on the '59.

You're probably OK with your '55.

Bidder s****h clearly wants this fridge badly.

I kind of wanted to drive up the price out of spite, but only took one shot at it.  I suspect s****h was ready to double my original max bid.

Oh well, I was in a bit of a panic about having to spring into action to pick it up anyway.

What's interesting is that there are some fridges on eBay that I've been watching and they continually are relisted.  Most are going for $50-$100; there are also a couple of early 60s Frigidaires that are apparently platinum lined as well.  Is the color the main reason why this one went so quickly?

And Ralph, sorry you didn't win it.  That sucks.

Color and or perhaps the auction was for an entire set; cooktop, fridge and oven. A similar GE oven alone went for more on fleaPay just recently.

Ucccchhh....so sorry!

funktionalart's profile picture
As others mention...many times those wind up relisted as people back out due to shipping cost, don't realise the weight/hassle of in-person moving, yadda yadda....check that seller's sales daily and local CL as well. It just *might* make another appearance. And if you're REALLY lucky, the winner only wants the oven and cooktop--so may be worth contacting seller via ebay msg and see if that's the case. Just pointing out the obvious, I know...but may well be worth the time to do.

Oh yes, I had been messaging with the seller.  He even stated that he "obviously" wasn't interested in making any money and just wanted to see a viable fridge go to good use.  I think this is why he didn't list it on CL, to keep scrappers out of the mix.

His last message to me was that their new fridge wasn't arriving until Saturday, and that they'd have to continue using the GE until then.  Not like I was planning to jump into commute traffic this afternoon and take the thing off their hands.  He advised me to "keep in touch."

When I saw the writing on the wall, I messaged again and said that if any logistical issues killed the deal with the winning bidder, to let me know -- and I gave him my phone number.

If this fridge wasn't meant to be mine, one will come along, and it might be a color I like better than brown.
