I had a big surprise on CL last night--unlike most collectors I don't buy fridges before about 1962 , so I thought I was pretty much assured I could take my pick of what I find on Phoenix CL made between '62 and about '85. I've a thing for certain Amanas...and really like black fridges--this pre '83 Amana 22 hit the listings within 5 minutes of my searches late last night. Did NOT care about missing freezer door cubby shelves, either.
Was SURE I had plenty of time to call this morning and go get it for $60. Nice "tuxedo" style with the chrome handles. The listing ended less than 3 hours later (like 3am!) Sad day for me! Pics for the archives if any other 70s/80s Amana lovers exist! | ||

Jason...it was the weirdest thing--
That fridge literally popped up as a brand new listing around 11 last night. Down at the bottom of listing the CL text read "POSTED 20 MINUTES AGO". It was gone before 3am. Was SURE I could have that one if I was awake early enough to call. I'm hunting for it again tonight just in case it reappears. And yes...there are SO many good things out here which makes it tough. Have to really narrow my want list to some super-specific criteria so I don't buy every single thing I see.....

That fridge is nice; I hope you find it again and are able to get it. It is really sharp looking in black.
It could also be that they posted it and then did a search on comps. The wonders of the internet... Look at the built in Modern Maid toasters. I imagine that a few years ago they were dirt cheap, but thanks to eBay, even skeevy ones go for about $100. | ||

Am wondering if a lot of CL shoppers...
are just tired of the new $2500 Asian-made SHITE which falls apart so soon. LG and Samsung fridges ABOUND out here on CL. Dunno if there are really any comps for an old Amana unit. It is a 30-40 year old fridge running R12....so realistically I don't think prices above $100 are even worth entertaining. That said...I check ebay for oddball Amana parts like certain door handles and interior bits and THOSE prices are CRAAAAZY. Saw a set of chrome Amana 22 handles (like in the pics) on ebay once which sold for something like $150.

John combo52 was the one who mentioned that $40/mo figure, and since he's in the service biz, I'm taking his word for it.
Late '60s/early '70s SXS fridges were just not very efficient; technology hadn't caught up with the desire for more capacity yet, I think. I remember my mom going into shock when she transitioned from a '58 GE Combination to an Americana SXS - the bills were pretty noticeably higher. | ||

Sandy--yeah...there IS bound to be extra cost to consider...
but I really think a lot of it is based on energy cost differences between U.S. regions. NOT calling you a liar at all....I believe there are parts of the US (east coast/tri-state) where it would be totally unjustifiable cost to run one of these. I just know that out here it really isn't that bad at all. I seem to remember my mom bitching loudly and often about $9 per month back in the late 70s with some Whirlpool SxS she'd bought...not sure what that amount equates to in today's funds...
Anyway, I'm fine with $12-15 per month on an old unit with Arizona electrical rates. Beats the hell out of coughing up immediately $2500/+ cash for some new LG or Samsung which will likely not see 10 years' service life. My sister just bought a HUGE french door Samsung for $3200 and I just wanna cry. Or disown her. We *can't possibly* be related :D | ||
