Well, I figured I had nothing to lose, so I plugged the J-47 Bendix automatic in...
No sparks, flames, etc - always a good sign. Better still - it ran!! The motor kicked right in and the tub started spinning. Unfortunately, I think the machine is a victim of 'timer motor death' - the timer did not advance during 'wash'... I advanced it manually and heard what I believe was the drain solenoid kick in and when I brought it to the 'dry' portion of the cycle, the machine kicked into the dizzying 330 rpm final spin. Not even going to try to compare it to the Unimatic... LOL
So the Bendix is in better shape than I thought!! Maybe tomorrow I'll peek at the timer and see what kind of drive motor it needs...

These older timer motor are easy to replace with the timer motors that came after the dreaded black motors. The new style motors look different, they are in a Steel plated silver case and have the timer motor leads attached. These newer timer motors were used from roughly the mid 50s through most of the 1960s and seem to be much more reliable that the earlier DBMs.

The timer probably did not advance in the wash because the water level switch was not satisfied if you were running it dry. |

Try blasting the motor with wd40 and then electronic contact cleaner it worked on my bendix which is the same one you have.Rotten shame the drive motor doesnt run after smoke poured out of it that day. |

Alas, no.... I did try to cheat the water level switch to see if that might make the timer kick in, but it didn't. The motor has indeed succumbed to 'black timer motor death'. I have been seriously wondering if the motor from the aluminum Christmas tree colour wheel might be a replacement... Ya never know!! |
