Sold so soon

well as hoover once said about their cleaners ` quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten'

Hope whoever has bought this machine, will enjoy as good a service as mine has given over the last 15 years.

Can't believe my luck

Well it was little old me who won this but in a bit of a bizzare way. I'd put a bid on it when I saw it to register interest in case someone got in touch with the seller for a behind the scences deal as I was expecting the cost to go up considerably. It wasn't due to finish until today but when I went back into eBay it had ended and I'd won it. I was totally confused and convinced something had gone wrong. It turns out that the sellers had tried to plug it in but couldn't get it to work so decided to end it and sent me a message to explain and see if I still wanted it. So gobsmacked I agreed and a round trip to Leeds took place yesterday to collect it.

The machine is in excellent condition with no rust or scratches. The only blemish is where some of the finish has worn off on the dispenser drawer - not sure how I can fix that but will have a think. It had belonged to the elderly lady that lived previously in the house and seems to have had little use. The only obvious repair seems to be a new hot water valve and it still has a supple rubber drain hose which is one of my highlights on any old machine.

Anyway, it wouldn't power up which turned out to be a popped suppressor which is quite common on these machines. Suppressor temporarily bypassed until I get a new one I set it going on a 90 deg C wash to try it out. I was so excited watching and listening to it filling and washing that I didn't notice the ever growing puddle on the floor from the rear. Initially I thought the tub seal had gone but it turns out it is a severe case of the rubber thermostat grommet perishing. Sounds great running and can't wait to get this back to full health.

Here's a few pics pre and post a quick clean and I'll see if I can post the two short videos I took.

S :)

Hello Steve I too am glad it has gone to some one who understands and will be able to look after this machine, I think I have some thermostat seals if you get stuck for one.

Suspension kits, belts, tub seals, door seals are available on ebay etc

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it

Gary

This is the pair I had, the dryer came first, mine also had some wear on the soap draw but I never got round to experimenting to sort it out. These now reside in the very safe hands of Matchboxpaul

Still leaking

sesteve's profile picture
Gary kindly sent me a new thermostat seal which I fitted yesterday but it still leaks between the seal and the backplate. The inside of the back plate feels quite rough so I guess it's not sitting flush. I have seen other repairs on here where it has been encased in silicon sealant but I wanted to avoid this if possible as the rest of the machine is in such good shape. Anyone got any tips or advice? Also, I think the motor bearing could do with a little lubrication - what's the best stuff to use?

Cheers
S :)

Seals

electron1100's profile picture
Hello Steve

This is a common occurrence because of the build up of crud, you can try rubbing it back with your finger on the inside of the backplate, but personally I do find a small line of silicon sealant applied in the gap on the seal does help you don't have to smother it, once the seal is in then turn it round a few times to distribute the sealant and that should do it.

Trade Bodge coming up here:-)

Right you can either change the bearings not a very difficult job if you have a good set of pullers.

or

Go to a motorcycle shop and buy a can of motorcycle chain grease make sure it has the spray tube, this is great stuff as it comes out like water so it penetrates the bearings and the leave it for about 10 minutes so the carrier evapourates you are then left with a nice coating of thick grease all over the bearings. It is best to remove the motor and sit it vertically to do the top one so it runs in easily.
As you spin the motor by hand you will hear the bearings get noisy at first and then they go quiet .

The back bearing requires you to remove the plastic cover so you can get access to the bearing and do the same.

This grease works on Hoover vacuum cleaner bearings aswell.

Gary

Here was your set Gary, just after they moved 'oop north' (well to the Midlands anyway).
They should make their way over to Ripley next year.

Great machines the 'New Magics'.

Another great save Steve! Congrats :-)

Eventually

sesteve's profile picture
its been ages but I finally got round to sealing the thermostat seal on the machine - I was supposed to be decorating but got distracted. The seal is totally watertight and so I ran a 95 whites wash on programme C. The amount of crud and the colour of the water that came out was unbelievable.

Anyway, when I went to put the back on and moved the machine there were a few spots of dirty water on the floor. Looks like the tub seal has gone and to be honest I thought that the bearings were a bit stiff so a bigger repair job than I thought and I've not done bearings before. Still all else is working fine so will be good to get this fixed soon.

S :)

Happy New Year Steve, yes those pesky backseals and bearings, but am sure if you can build your own Launderairium and repair hotpoint toploaders, this will be an easy fix if not methodical, and lots of info available with the likes of Gary and Mathew having renovated their own.I wouldnt mind betting after the hot wash and crud removed it seals itself again for now!!

Happy new year to you too Mike and great picture. Sadly a second boil wash made it worse so I guess it's perished like the thermostat seal. Perhaps I should host a Hoover repair masterclass weekend with the experts on hand as this needs repairing - the Computer Control needs an anti twist kit fitting as the new door seal also leaks and I have an electron dryer that needs an overhaul and new bearing. There are plenty other jobs to do as well including finishing the launderarium - just not enough hours in the day. Still it's given me the opportunity to use the Microprofile for a change.

Bearings

electron1100's profile picture
Hello Steve
I am sorry the bearing seal has failed after 35 years...............its a disgrace I feel like writing to Hoover :-)

It is not a difficult job just a bit lengthy, but Mat or I can help you, also you may aswell change the tub back plate seal, at this age it will be on its last legs

But here is a suitable bearing kit for sale for your machine.

Haha Gary. I was thinking the same thing and went to get my Hallmark fine writing paper and Parker fountain pen but alas, not to be found anywhere - must have got lost in the move! Would have probably got some club card vouchers or something if I'd written to the Perivale address anyway! I think all of the rubber parts have perished to some degree probably a combination of age and the machine not being used for a long while before I got it.

Thanks for the links - I think I actually might have a bearing kit that I purchased before the machine - in hope at the time - so will check when I get a moment. Will get stocked up on any other necessary parts and then shout for help especially as I don't have a service manual for it. Any idea on what door boot I should get?

Cheers
S :)

Door Boot

electron1100's profile picture
the Door boots are different between the flush door and proud door models, so you will want a proud door model door boot.

here is one

The worst thing for the longevity of seals and rubbers is not to use them, so if this machine had been stuck some where for a long time it is likely all the rubber bits will be dried up and cracking etc.

Gary

Ps you never know if you had written you might have got a free flight!!!!
