Where does one buy one of those spinner only thingies for wringing out the last drops of water from the wash? I checked a number of online sites but they were mostly British.

Electricity is supposed to go up 73% this summer and I'm using that as an excuse to buy one ;)

Spin-X is the only one I know of that is sold on this side of the pond. IIRC there may be another made in Pakistan, but the quality may not be that good.

If capacity is not an issue, try to find a Hoover TT. The spinner basket spins at 3,300 rpms and works a treat on extracting water. Again only problem is capacity.

Hey Veg

Will certainly make a saving with a spinner, I`d recommend a Servis/Speed Queen Twinny or a vintage Frigidaire...and Surf!!

Spin Speeds:
SpinEx = 3,300, 1,340 "G"s
Hotpoint = 3,100
Servis / Speed Queen = 2,800
Frigidaire = 2,800, 1,132 "G"s
Hoover = 2,300
Danby = 1,600

Vego-o-matic, a SpinX will pay for itself almost twice as fast if your electricity rates are going up like that. $450 is a one-time cost; you'll get a big smile on your face every month after that when you see the electricity bill is lower than it would have been otherwise (look at your total KWH consumed, compare to the previous month, or the same month the previous year).

The Pakistani units sold at The Laundry Alternative might have improved since the first batch that seemed to be prone to self-destruct mode. They also have a little countertop unit for $69.95 that'll hold one or two articles at a time if you don't mind taking that much longer to get through the whole load.

Or you could be a guinea-pig for all of us here and buy a UK unit, and one of those plug-in voltage converters at Radio Snack (get one that's rated high enough in terms of power output), and see how it goes. Note the voltage converters don't deal with the powerline frequency, so an English machine on USA power will run about 20% faster, so load it carefully.

With all the electricity rate increases coming ahead, and more to come after that as long as oil prices keep going up and we haven't built enough nukes & wind to cover the gap, the SpinX company would be a good one to invest in. They're not publicly traded but it might be possible to purchase shares directly from the company. I should look into this...

How strong is YOUR G-force?

Veg: I believe you have a Frig-Ge-more front-loader. .... as I do. My Pakistani play-thing did not extract much if any water from the front loader's batches.It did wonders however, on my top-loaders' goods.

Also, spin speed alone does not tell the whole story. My understanding is that a cylinder with a smaller diameter has to spin much faster than one of a larger diameter to generate the same g-force and extraction.

Yeppers, I have a Frigidaire FL. Frankly, I didn't think the spin dryer would help that much--I just want an excuse to get one!

Guy at Laundry Alternative said it would be about 5 months before they get more in stock. Hope I haven't spent all my money by then.

Forget those puny spin driers! If you really want to show those in your area, who is the Laundry King, get a Bock extractor off eBay. You'll need to pour several feet of concrete to bolt it into, but after that you'll be sitting pretty! *LOL*

Once you have your Bock up and running, you can make some money by charging your neighbours to run their washing through. Few minutes in a Bock should bring drying time down to almost nil for some items. During the warmer months, most laundry can be strung on a clothes line and will be dry in minutes.

Great idea, Launderess, but unfortunately, the condo association frowns on pouring several feet of concrete, especially on the fourth floor!

You just have to pour the concrete while they're not looking:-) Or if anyone asks about the cement truck in the driveway, you can say "Yeah I saw that too. I wondered what it was doing in the neighborhood..."

experience with spin dryers in europe

Spin dryers here in Europe (Bosch,Siemens, Miele, EBD) are built for 50 Hz, not just 230V.
This means some serious problems in the 'States with a European currency unit, even if the inverter doesn't blow up the moment the spin cycle starts...
I have used my EBD since 1983, it is pretty much OEM for all the others. Every five years or so the rubber loops the motor hangs on snap, otherwise just great. Three minutes spin time (packed carefully so nothing tears or rips) and I cut the drying time by more than half.
Portable and light weight, don't understand why they fell out of favor in the 'States - I'd just do anything for that Frigidaire.
Have heard mixed reports on the Haier, anyone know for sure?

I didn't know Haier made a spin-dryer for sale in the USA. Do they? Anyone know anything else about that?

Why they fell out of favor in the USA: We had cheap electricity for a while.

Those days are coming to a close and it'll take another ten years to build enough nuclear, wind, and solar to bring the cost back down again, so I anticipate more spin dryers coming into the USA market. But we still have SpinX, and even at $450 it's a good deal, the payback period used to be 5 years but it's going to be 2 - 3 years pretty soon. And you do see your KWH consumption go down immediately.
